Boy, 4, shoots babysitter for stepping on his foot

JACKSON, Ohio ? Police say a 4-year-old boy in southern Ohio shot his babysitter because the sitter accidentally stepped on his foot. Police said 18-year-old Nathan Beavers and several other teenagers were babysitting several young children in a mobile home in Jackson on Sunday when the shooting occurred.

Witnesses told police the 4-year-old retrieved the shotgun from a bedroom closet and shot Beavers. Police said the child was angry because Beavers accidentally stepped on his foot.

Beavers was hospitalized with minor pellet wounds to his arm and side.

Police say another teen was also injured with shotgun pellets.

Jackson County Sheriff John Shashteen said authorities are investigating the shooting. The child has not been charged.

Yea, nobody talks about the people who were all killed when guys pushed their way into their house, or some poor schmuck who has his kid stolen at knife point. Nobody talks about the fact that gun crimes are much much lower in states that do not have licensing restrictions...But some complete asshole leaves a gun laying around and all guns are bad.

Bic has a metal spring tab on top of the roller that makes it harder to press down to turn the roller

The cheaper ones the roller is spring loaded so you have to press down on it

You just never realized that they were safety's, because that's why they designed them like that.

Like I said, you have seen them, just you really didn't know what it was.

kids come in all shapes and sizes and it does not take too much pressure to get a disposable to work, infact i would think a kid would see it as a challenge.

i think it has something to do with a baby or young toddler age child that doesn't know better, or might not even know what a lighter is.

Are you talking about the red lever? That is not really a safety. More of a valved release. I don't recall Bic ever not having that. How else would you release the gas?

They used to have those levers you had to push in in order to engage the valve. Not sure what happened to those.

Gun control laws would not have prevented this accident so it isn't even worth talking about. Even in countries with gun-control and in proposed American gun-control laws, shotguns are legal and fine to have. The problem in this incident was the weapon was not properly stored... no law would have prevented that. That is just stupidity.

And the point of strict gun laws is to make it virtually impossible for irresponsible people to get their hands on guns.

Hell, even here in The Netherlands, people can legally own guns. But they'll have to spend a year getting the license (which includes joining a shooting club for courses and such), and if there's any indication whatsoever that they might not be responsible weapon owners, they still won't get a license.

that is a safety

before that they had a plastic piece that had to be released in order to depress the valve

the metal tab is the new version a couple years old

the metal spring requires more pressure to spin the wheel

the other lighter in your pics
the thumbwheel is spring loaded and has to be pressed down a ways in order to make contact with the flint

Here in Canada the minimum requirements for storage of a shotgun or rifle is a trigger lock, with the ammo stored separately. If you don't have a trigger lock on it, then it has to be in a locked cabinet. I personally have a gun safe.

Guns are great, but they need to be kept out of little kid's hands until they can be taught how to use them safely.

that not only keeps them out of little kids hands but also out of your hands in case you need it quickly

they should just make 2257 laws for criminals,
all robbers must first keep a record of every house they break in to.

As a non-smoker I have limited use of lighters. Upon closer inspection I see that there is a spring there. Much better option than the clip they used to use.

Right, but how exactly do they enforce that law? Do they inspect your home randomly? Or is it based on the trust system and if you get caught shooting someone then you also get hit with that charge as well?

I highly doubt all Canadians meet those minimum requirements. There is no way to enforce such a law. That is why gun control laws would not have done anything to prevent this incident. The parents should have had the weapon out of the child's reach, period. This is an "idiot incident", we don't need another 10 laws trying to prevent something like this happening again when common sense can't even prevent it.

If that 4 year old had loaded a slug in that gun, I doubt anyone involved would have thought that was a stupid law. I can't believe you think forcing people to keep their guns locked is a stupid law.

There's nothing stopping you from keeping your shotgun under your bed with your ammo in your nightstand right beside you. Just keep the key in the bedroom with you where a kid can't get at it.

If you don't have time to grab a key in your bedroom chances are your going to get killed before you even know what's going on anyway.

I keep a pistol grip Mossberg beside my bed (with trigger lock on) and I have a nice bayonet on the end of it in case I need to get pokey.

Stupid people... that's all it was.

They enforce it when they see it happen. For instance, this family in Ohio would lose all their guns and be charged. Nothing will happen in this case, since there is no law on the books.

And yes, if police are called to your house for an incident involving a firearm then they are going to inspect your storage methods. If you are not following the rules then you get charged, possibly losing your firearms.

Seeing people charged with stuff like that acts as a deterrent for most people, even though it should be common sense already.

But I agree, they were stupid and stupid people probably aren't going to care anyway.
