Giant server seized in raid on file-sharing site

Sorry if this has gone around already. I hadn't seen it. Thought it was relevant to our industry.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29566891/

STOCKHOLM - Police have made a major crackdown on illegal file-sharing by seizing a giant computer server during an apartment raid in a Stockholm suburb, an official said Saturday.

Henrik Ponten, a spokesman at the Swedish Anti-Piracy Bureau, said the server contained about 65 terabytes of files, corresponding to around 16,000 full-length movies.

"The size of the works are gigantic," he said, noting it was one of the biggest pirate server confiscations ever in Sweden.

Police raided the apartment in Brandbergen, in southern Stockholm, in the beginning of February after the anti-piracy bureau filed a report about it, he said.

Ponten said one suspect had been questioned by police, but was released shortly afterward since the confiscation was the main objective of the raid.

"Basically he admitted he was in charge of it (the server)," he said.

According to Ponten the server is part of an international pirate network called "The Scene," providing users of Internet file-sharing sites such as Sweden's The Pirate Bay with extensive access to copyright protected material.

but i thought everyone sharing movies was just doing it cuz they like sharing.

maybe he was just timeshifting the 13000 full length movies.

or maybe.....

the big torrent sites pay for guys to run these servers full of stolen movies because they make big profits from the advertising, because if they relied purely on people "sharing" they wouldn't make a dime

So, I've been thinking about this article. Can we assume that the owner of the server had received DMCA notices and simply chose to ignore them? Otherwise, why would they raid him? Oh wait, DMCA's are just U.S.? I don't fucking know.

I certainly would like to see some hosting companies get raided. If the ones who blatantly ignore pirated content start getting some unwanted attention, then the ones who pretend to care about pirated content will begin to care more and take steps to ensure their own survival.

Anyway, I'm tired and can barely hold my eyes open. Someone smarter than me tell me if this recent action helps us in any way? I'll be back in the morning to read it. :-)

Y'all have a good night.

If hosts were raided then it's pretty much guaranteed that law enforcement will fuck up and remove the servers of innocent parties. It would destroy the host but it would also seriously affect many other businesses who rely on that host being up.

Side thought... they must have a nice pipe in Sweden if they can host 65TB of content from an apartment...

That server was a "top" site. Those topsites distribute to "distro's". topsites don't burn alot of BW, but those distro sites who distribute the files do... But still, somebody got hit hard! (normally only a selected few have access to a topsite like that).

Only 65 terabytes?

That must have been the small server.

http://torrentfreak.com/large-pirate...sweden-090306/

the scene does not like the pirate bay, they are a close community of pirates, who hate when their hard work as pirates is distributed beyond their closed group.

basically someone within the group is acting as a traitor when they take the movie and post it on a public tracker like TPB.

given it closed nature, i wonder how they identified him, would be really funny if the anti piracy group gets sued again.

Their "hard work" ... Gideon your choice of words just astounds me. I wonder how they would feel if they actually had any creativity or had poured in the REAL work of producing what they have pirated and profited off of while the people who really did create something are losing their ass financially.

Poor pirates. All that "hard work"

their words not mine, scene is elitist, it like the hacker community of old, you only got in if you could do a "richeous hack". the goal is a perfect cam, and many of these guys will go see a movie a dozen times to get a perfect cam of it.

They will spend ungodly amounts of money on spy cam equipement to get a high quality feed.

except that the scene has been around for a long time, it was underground and very hard to catch, until the pirate bay put a big giant bulleye on them.

With the massive publicity came the attention of the cops, if the scene had it there way they would love to go back to the closed community way things were.

remember they are not really making money, most are doing it for cred, in the community (ala old school hacking back in the day).

This is the problem with DMCA, there is no need to prove it was uploaded by someone else. Maybe if Tubes had to prove who up loaded their content they would have problem.

Actually a LOT of people do. Just start googling up some surfer forums and your eyes will open quickly.
It really IS surfers doing it. They have entire communities of it. Just ask Eric at RemoveYourContent.Com The fastest and easiest way to find your shit is to go to some surfer forums.
Of course the forums themselves are now so huge with traffic that they are also getting pre-paid spots from cam and dating sponsors.

It's pretty bad Paul. Since Claudia-Marie is a huge tit niche...I was able to see this over a year ago by just googling her name and/or big tit forum or big tit message board. Guys with paysites that have multiple models have been slower to see this happening because they don't have an absolute search term to look for.

That's the true nightmare of the torrent guys and the illegit tube folks. They really don't have to do anything. The surfers do it all for them and give each other virtual high fives on the forums when they post the links to all the free content that they have uploaded. It's real, real bad.

But the guys who run these sites know this and take advantage of the dumb ass surfers human nature for acceptance. Brother there are MILLIONS of lonely guys out there who have developed personalities on these forums. And they LIVE to get home after work and have their virtual "friends" tell them that they are "the man".

The pirates take advantage of this and laugh all the way to the bank. They don't have to work at all. The script keeps it all automated. The content producers do all the work and are the only ones held accountable for 2257. The surfers do the uploading. The surfers do the advertising for them on the forums. The traffic flows. And the dating, cam sites, and short sighted paysite owners pay the bills for them.

Edit...and as proof of "lonely guys on forums looking for acceptance" you only have to look at all the anonymous surfers all over GFY posting as if they are in this business. Pathetic.

actually it was the reverse paid gigs were few and far between, you had to prove yourself over and over again.
the big thing was doing the invisible hack, getting in getting good info, and eliminating all traces that you were there.

the problem is that the goal post kept moving each time you figuired out a trick to get in clean, the sys admins would figuire out how to stop it.

prove you were elite and you got paid to hack, there were a lot more mid carders guys who could get by the first revision, but didn't have the skills, intelligence, and creativity to get by the next.

And there were a lot of people that fall into the faceless masses group those that would love to be in the know and couldn't even get a single hack under their belt.

the numbers grew as you went further away from the elite.

And all those mid range guys, they were doing it only for cred, in the hopes that they would become good enough to get paid to do it.

I wonder when they'll auction off that server. We could use 65 TB for Clonebox.
We have about 25 TB available with our current servers, but I'm sure we'll need
more soon.
