Tylenol w/ codeine making me insanely itchy?

After I had oral surgery to remove a wisdom tooth last Monday I took some Tylenol with codeine for the pain for a couple of days and ever since them my skin has been insanely itchy! I haven't taken the stuff anymore since Wednesday, but my skin is still crawling and it is driving me insane! I wonder if I am allergic to it, or if my itchiness is maybe caused by the fact that my body is still healing from having my gum cut open. This is crazy, especially since I haven't taken anymore codeine for a few days now. I almost scratched myself until I bled last night and I am miserable right now. Anyone else ever experience anything like this?

Everything is going to be fine. You're very high right now. You will probably be that way for about five more hours. Try taking some vitamin B complex, vitamin C complex.. if you have a beer, go ahead and drink it..

Just remember you're a living organism on this planet, and you're very safe. You've just taken a heavy drug. Relax, stay inside and listen to some music, Okay? Do you have any Allman Brothers?

There is a famous line in a Nirvana song where he sings, "I got so high I scratched till I bled."

On a more serious note, if you get a rash there is a decent chance you are allergic to the codeine. A few years ago I got really sick and the doctor gave me cough syrup with codeine and I broke out in a pretty nasty rash. I took an allergy tablet and it fixed the problem. Now I just have to avoid opiate based pain killers.

I wish more medications had a side effect of "euphoria"

I've taken MANY Tylenol 3's and never go itchy. When I say MANY I mean that was ALL I took when I got headaches and/or migraines. I got many headaches and migraines in the past and still do. For me anything with codeine wakes me right up. I can do just about anything hopped up on T3's. lol

I've had a constant small headache for about a a week and a half now, maybe doc will juice me some t3's.

Regardless,

it is VERY normal for you to be itching like that from the codeine, have no worries about that.

I didn't know Tylenol 3 had so many fans, lol. I am about to throw those fuckers in the garbage. Hopefully the itches will fade soon as it has already been a few days since I stopped taking them.

Benedryl will help

Seriously. If you need the meds to avoid the pain, benedryl will help or if you just want the itching to go away more quickly.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Well that's odd,

I didn't realize you still had the itches after you stopped taking them.

Usually it only happens while you are on them, at the latest the next day.

As someone else has indicated, Codeine is an opiate and opiates cause itching. In hospital this is treated with an antihistamine, often Benadryl, and you can treat it at home with the same drug or other OTC oral antihistamines that are available at the pharmacy. Gravol can also be quite effective for this purpose, or you can save a few $ and buy the generic version Dimenhydrinate, which does not require an Rx but generally has to be asked for at the pharmacy. Dimenhydrinate (generic) is usually available for only a couple of dollars for a bottle of 50 or 100, versus the same cost or more for 10 or 20 tablets of Gravol. The generic form is a popular choice for those looking for a quick and cheap high.

I agree that you can get itchy from taking them but, odd that it is lasting so many days after you stopped. Call your Dr or at the least, your Pharmacist and talk to them.
