Dog experts: Time or distance?

Do you feel it is better to walk your dog for 45 minutes and only go .5 mile or 30 minutes and do a mile?

As long as they get their business done, I don't think it matters :-)

I don't take my dog to walk so he can pee or poop, I take him for exercise. He has a yard he can use as a toilet.

30 min is what I do at least once a day besides the 3 to 4 10 minute walks.

I try to walk my dog every night for 30 minutes. He seems to be satisfied by that. A few times a week we go on an hour hike up a small mountain.

After about 5 minutes he's peed on so many things he is just lifting his leg for fun. He just loves to go on walks.

I kind of figured...I think as long as you exercise big dogs around an hour to an hour and a half per day, you're good to go. i.e. Can be morning and night walk, what Roald said, etc.

dogs benefit from elevated heart rate so a faster pace shorter duration provides more exercise

the ideal pace is ~3+ mph, according to the vet, so you would also want to pick up the pace on the 30 minute 1 mile.

Of course it will be different for each dog but I think the quality of the walk is more important than the time or distance.

I have several different paths I take my dog on and each one offers a different experience for him. One way has a nice spot for chasing a tennis ball another has lots to sniff and scavenge. We'll start out and I'll let him pick which direction he wants to go. It's his time so I try and make it as fun and stimulating as I can.

Usually 30 min is good for our lab. He runs around outside throughout the day as well but for walks they are usually around 30 minutes.

My Lab has a run on the trails with his buddy every morning. They run through the woods like wolves, wrestle and swim.

20 minutes of that is better than 2 hours of walking. He sleeps all day and I can get my work done.

So I would say do something short but intense. Long distance fetch with one of those ball chuckers is great also.

My dog trips me out sometimes. He likes to pee on whatever is standing still, but I noticed at the dog park, when he runs out of pee he will start marking stuff with crap.

I took him to a new place last week that had these huge, old eucalyptus trees. The bases of the trees were wider than he is long. He tried so hard to pee on them but could not get his leg wrapped around it sufficiently to satisfy his needs, so he would just back up to them and poop on the base.

Fucking weirdo dog.

The distance was just for the sake of the post. I usually find somewhere we can walk that I can take the leash off and let him blast around.

We never take the same route twice in a row.

Depends if it is a large breed or not. Larger dogs need more exercise (distance), smaller dogs less exercise.

I try to take mine for about .5 mile fast paced every morning, plus some off leash wind down time at the dog park for about 45 minutes afterwards...

As long as the walk is brisk 30 min. should be fine. The walk is for the dog to burn energy and of course for discipline.
