Anyone else feel like cancelling tv
You can get any show comm free and clear for a small dl wait. Why do I need paid, network, full of commercials TV anymore. I'd rather watch a dl'd copy of survivor (for example) rather than Tivoing or any type of recording. I'm selective. Who needs all that commecials and repeats all the time. I hardly ever watch news. I watch maybe one good show a day before bed. I have not watched incoming TV in 3 weeks. Except I did record 2 hours of Gangland last night off HIS channel. I could quit commercial TV tomorrow and have plenty of good stuff to watch I recorded. But of course I don't and continue to get robbed. |

 | As sad as it sounds, transporting my ass from my office chair to my living room couch for a half an hour to watch TV while I eat or whatever feels like relaxation...just wouldn't be the same if I was downloading it to my comp and watching it here. FF'ing through commercials is 2nd nature now anyways so I barely notice them.

 | I hear ya. Just when I sit down to watch I always pop a videotape or cd-rw or something I recorded. I cant stand to turn it on and hear 4 mins of fricking bs commercials. Basicly I never watch anything live anymore. I have a fair amount recorded and not enough time to watch it. So it makes live TV take a back seat. |

 | Cancel. TV time should be reserved for stuff that on your deathbed you're happy to have pissed away those moments of being alive on.. ie... Hello The Wire complete season on DVD.. Goodbye MTV Cribs. I can't think of anything more repellant than the wasteful consumption of media when you could be doing almost anything else. The average person watches almost 400hours of ads a year.. thats 9 40hr working weeks of shit. Learn a language.. learn to play an instrument.. learn to paint.. get a hobby with earning potential.. there is heaps of relaxing shit to do that allows people to switch off that isn't just designed to help us forget the banality of our lives and keep us wilfully distracted until we're mouthing still air in our graves. I'm coming across strong here.. but lately I start hating myself whenever I realise the movie that i'm watching isn't anywhere near as good as it should be or whatever... I'm paying to consume a portion of my existence in a less than satisfactory way.. Jesus I can't wait for itunes or something like it to fully take over and I can just watch what I want when I want. It's probably this high potency brain herb shit i've started taking lol. Anyways.. talking of wasting life.. I only dropped in to get my singing teachers's number.. now I'm going home to paint. ;) |

 | The price of mine just went up to $52... I watch 5 channels max. I've thought about it but sometimes flipping through the channels and randomly watching crap is what you want to do as opposed to thinking about what to watch and then downloading it, etc.

You have to be selective exactly. Heck I can have the "full maximum tv package" when I can read a guide online and download online. The "full maximum tv package" would be like $1000/ year from whoever. That buys a lot of blu ray discs. Hmm Blu ray discs. Or some History channel repeat I already have recorded if it's any good. See I make sense but I know for many the money is not a factor. Then I say keep it. But lately financially things are tighter so I'm considering all options.

But most of the stuff is repeats or just lame now days. Lots of time to DL any show I want. Can TV be impacted by the internet like music? Prob not. Most guys arent insane, porn peddling loners who DL all day like me. I fig as long as I'm here I might as well be DLing.

 | I don't have a TV for four years, although I watch a lot of movies and documentaries - all dvd's or lend from friends. I don't miss TV at all, it actually irritates me if I am sitting somewhere and tv with all the shrieks and commercials is on.

Cable tv isn't that expensive. People spend more than that on one night going out. I don't go out, I don't drink. I don't party. I need to have at least ONE vice in life. I need at least one fun thing to do. I need at least one escape. Watching tv is that for me.

when you timeshift the content using a pvr you are not counted towards their rating numbers advertisers don't pay for those commercials which means you are doing as much damage to the show as if you downloaded it via torrents (more because torrents at least count the downloads so product placement revenue increases) It really easy to set your utorrent client to download your favorite shows commercial free may tv related sites have rss feeds of your favorite shows. so all you have to do is import that. Your favorite shows automagically download into your download folder, no fuss no muss. you realize that if you buy cable and PVR survivor they get nothing, not even a bump for product placement, if you download it "illegally" from torrents they at least get a count that can be used to get better product placement revenues.

 | I have a Mac Mini, controlled by a PS3 keyboard (Built in trackpad) Or I can control it from my iphone. Plugged directly into my 52 flat screen. Even found a sexy wall mount for it, so it looks like it belongs there. Use the Mac not only to watch hulu and recorded movies but also any DVD's I get. For blueray I just use the Ps3. I have 2 terabytes of HD space attached to it all, so plenty of room, if I need more, it's all networked via gigabyte ethernet to my central storage with another 5 Terabytes.

 | I don't have digital cable or any premium channels. I canceled all of them. I have the "family package", which is 0-80, which contains most of the major channels. They also have a $30 package but it is total BS. Its channels 0-30, which covers the major networks and stuff like C-SPAN, etc.

 | I could never be without my tv and fuck downloading shit off the net.. I have a 106" projector to watch whatever tv show or movie I want to and I'm not going to spend the time downloading it and watching it on a 22" lcd or 17" laptop.. sure if i thought about it i could prolly play it with my PS3 but again I do work online all day I don't wanna have to do work arounds to relax and watch tv haha and yeah if you hate commercials get a dvr and do what i do. When a hour show comes on I'll hit pause on live tv and come back 20 mins into the show and then you can watch the whole show in about 40 mins fast forwarding commercials and getting to the end of the show about the same time as if you watched it from start to end

 | TV is still something I like to do the old fashioned way -- and by that I mean actually watch the TV while sitting on my couch -- not hunched over a monitor. I don't want to spend time looking for shows, or making sure its good resolution, or wait for it to download. Most cable companies, mine included offer a pretty nice DVR that records all the shows I want, knows when they're repeats, and allows me to dictate when I watch....and I don't watch an ad unless I want to. Also, my cable company will take notice and flag you if you start downloading like crazy constantly. Even if they didn't, I still prefer to watch 30 Rock or Breaking Bad on 50 inch DLP. You're painting a far worse picture of the Tv watching situation than actually exists. Oh yeah, how the fuck do you channel surf? That's how you find the best shit to watch sometimes.

Answer: Projector. I just hook a cheap one up to my laptop and i've got a 100" plus "tv". I don't really get what the hassle is. For the bedroom I use a 24" LCD at the foot of the bed, for the entertainment room a 100"+ projector. Plus you don't have to go balls out with a 5k projector, you'd be surprised at the quality of a cheapy 1k one. I bought it for business but I was mucking around and found it worked really well for movies. As well as Wii Sports or whatver when you have people around of r a dinner/party.

 | I'm looking into getting one of these mega boxes which you can use multiple satelites on and use cards to decode multiple channel streams. I think they can handle around 3,000 channels and 4-6 sats at once. And the best things about it is, the channels and networks still get ad-revenue while you get tv for free (after a bit of investment) |

 | The DirecTV HD package is great. I set the DVR to record all my favorite series, documentaries and MMA fight shows automatically and watch them on my 52" HDTV. Downloading and watching through a computer monitor or pc-to-tv hook up is not even an option in terms of convenience compared to this. I never purchase DVDs or go to the theater anymore, so I get my money's worth from my approx. $105/month DirecTV HD package. |

 | That's a nice setup. Well done. I hope to have the same soon myself with Dish Network when I can get an installer out. For $105 you must get the whole shabang. Anyhow they have the 720 DVR for like only $5 a month more if you lease it than what I am paying for basic now. Gets ya HD and Basic for like $60/Mo Tops. And they pay local installation. Plus gets you the 720 DVR which is what I need. A good DVR will solve all TV woes. |

 | I've been considering getting rid of cable too. It costing me a good chunk and then on top of that I only have basic. Im stuck with comcast because I have too many tree's and cant get dish which would be like 30 bucks cheaper. I can watch nearly every show online (legally) the only thing I haven't found a solution for is live sports. |
