Did anyone else think the new Star Trek was shit?

I saw it last night and although I liked the eye candy I thought the story was crap. Scenes such as the one where Kirk runs into a cave and Spock just happens to be there are so bad I was moaning, or Mr. Scott in the water pipe. This shit is just crafted for pre-teens.

And why does the inside of the Enterprise now look like a sewage treatment plant?

I left feeling really let down that Rodenberry's vision of a hopeful and rational future is being replaced by the antics of randy and uneducated tweens.

Everyone wants it the way they want it nowadays, right?

Hollywood sucks ass, but this Star Trek was excellent.

I'm a bit nervous as I don't really like JJ Abrams. He can make amazing looking movies but he's not much of a story teller IMHO.

I'll see it on DVD.

P.S. The inside of the enterprise is actually a Budweiser plant. Seriously, they used the beer factory as a set.

My fiance can't stand anything sci fi and she actually really liked it.

I thought it was much better than I anticipated, albeit a bit corny and over the top.

Figure the inside was supposed to look more industrial since it was still early on. Think of computers 20-40 years ago and then today.

From what I can gather ... 80% of people liked it or loved it, 5% actually honestly didn't like it. The other 15% are those annoying movie critic types who spend all their time looking for faults in the movies rather than enjoying them, or had already decided they hated it before they saw it

Yeah I agree if it weren't for the talent of some of the actors it would have been a complete farce.

But in general it was total shash...I guess they are trying to get the tweens hooked on the franchise.

You're kidding right? ... Lost? There is NO intelligent TV being aired these days, with the exception of a few shows, that keep my attention for 5 seasons worth. Fringe? Another decent overlooked TV show, also by JJ Abrams. Step away from the reality TV and brain dead entertainment....

I have found in recent years that some really good movies, not all blockbusters, are getting knocked or passed on for what I believe is lack of either intelligence or imagination on the part of the viewer who is "reality" locked. Ever heard of Suspension of Disbelief? It is what you need to do for ANY movie you see especially sci-fi/fantasy.

Then there is that guy that wants to say a movie almost everyone has liked is in all reality a piece of shit even if he thought it was good, just to stir up some shit.

I would like to see a study done on these people and see what the ratio is who are stuck in reality tv land or similar brain dead entertainment and have a bad week if they miss their newest installment of American Idol.

No, no, don't do this! Go see it in the theatre, or even better, in IMAX. It is a Fucking excellent movie. Definately the best of the year so far, definately the best Star Trek movie ever made, and definately one of my top 5 favorites if not #1. I plan to see it again this week (in Imax again).

On Fringe:

Fringe is a pretty good show. Production values are high and the stories are fun and smart. The characters are good too but I am having trouble with Joshua Jackson's character. He puts his Dad down too much and discounts much of what he says. It worked in earlier episodes but now its getting boring. (He's crazy, ok, we get it! Geeze).

TREK is EXCELLENT. Even if you're not a trekker you'll still enjoy this movie. Go.

I was fine with it really but did ask my friend half way through if we could leave because the seats were just uncomfortable. The movie was run of the mill explosions, zapping, cool future cars and such, definitely nothing new or special about this movie. Pass.

There were no future cars in Star Trek. There was one future bike (no wheels!) and a classic Corvette with an updated media center, and the first ever product placement (Nokia) in a Star Trek Movie.

Loved it.

Having said that, there are tons of big gaping holes in the plot:
Off the top of my head in no particular order:

1)Spock maroons a crew member on a random ice planet full of dinosaur beasts - can anyone say 'murder'

2)on same random planet in random location, kirk accidentally walks right into old Spock in a cave

3)bad guy leaves old spock in said cave to witness the destruction of Vulcan???? Give me a break. Where is the fun in forcing someone to witness something if you aren't there to witness their pain!? bullshit plot device.

4)speaking of plot devices - how come red matter can create a huge black hole when it explodes in a ship, but in order to hurt a planet it needs an elaborate and slow drill to bore a hole to the core of the planet? Why not just set it in the atmosphere and blow it up, why not just set it nearby and blow it up - in any case the black hole would just about instantly destroy everything nearby.

5)Scotty going through the "futurama' water tubes - give me a break. Good thing that "safety button: was there to dump out the water in a man-sized escape hole.

6)Why is the flagship of the federation, fresh out of the construction bay, manned almost ENTIRELY by new grads right out of the academy?

7)How come being near a black hole = instant death for a planet or a ship (sometimes) OR convenient time travel unscathed for multiple ships at other times?

8)why do we need space sky divers to jump onto a drilling rig in San Francisco - don't we have ANY kind of planetary defenses? even ground to air missiles would have taken it out in seconds.

9)So.... the Vulcan high counsel just sits around in a cave staring at an obelisk all day, all in one room? With no guards or other folks hanging around at all? How convenient.

10)We can transport two people falling at terminal velocity, and we can transport onto a ship moving at warp speed, but we can't transport a woman who is slowly beginning to fall a little bit on the edge of a cliff?

But really - I did love it.

hello Mr./Mrs. motion picture critic....thanks for your input. Until you amass a few Emmy and Golden Globe-winning American film and television producer, screenwriter, director, actor, composer, and found your own Production company...non adult. then your armchair qb status will be lifted......Jeffrey Jacob "J. J." Abrams you are not.....so now the question now is....if you think you can do better.......get your ass out to lala land!

it still is sunday....so when the totals come in over the weekend....tell me if ya can do better then that......what a bunch of monday morning qb winers......sad really.

I do like your critique.....but fuck.....the majority will rule per usual and fuck they have already signed on to do a few more......so i guess they think its got something.

Can't help but agree with most of gornyhuy's points, especially numbers 1, 2 and 5.

That said, I enjoyed the movie -- largely because of some key performances: Veteran character actor Bruce Greenwood (as Capt. Pike) and Zachary Quinto (young Spock) were excellent, while Zoe Saldana (Uhura) looked good enough to eat.

Didn't care for Chris Pine as Capt. Kirk, though. Dude was like a college frat boy; got on my nerves.

I try not to worry about all those little plot holes.. i mean come on... its a movie based on spaceships, aliens, teleportation, etc. Why believe any of that is "possible" but not that he could run into the old spoc on a planet. I dunno I really enjoyed it, of course there was some parts that made you wonder a little bit, but overall a fun movie to watch.
