Fact: Mac's are NOT easier to use.

So my girlfriend has this MacBook... One of the white Core2Duo ones. She claims it's easier to use, but neither of us can ever figure out how to do the mot seemingly simple of shit.

Ok, well my problem now is that I'm far away from home using this WebSTAR Scientific Atlanta non-wifi cable modem and all I've got with me is her CrapBook and my Blackberry which I'm posting this on. Her work notebook running Vista (which she has with her at the moment) self configures and is totally plug-and-play with the cable modem...

The Crapintosh says 'Connected' under Network properties, and shows an IP address using DHCP. But it still won't let me get online.

Can any Mac expert lend some sort of solution? I'm stumped.

I don't have a single Mac in my house that doesn't automatically connect to my network. They've all done so out of the box.

I have never had a problem with any of my MACs connecting to any router or network.... usually the assistant can walk you right through it.

My brother bought a Macbook Air last year and tried really REALLY hard to like it.

A year later, he's now using my spare HP laptop and the Macbook Air is currently on ebay. He simply couldn't use it and hated the interface.

I, too, hate Macs and feel handcuffed when using them. My Dell works just fine.

i just bought my first Mac, an iMac, last week. it did NOT connect to the Internet right out of the box, it tried and failed, I had to call my cable company to get it working. I also had trouble sending out email, another call to my cable company.

i like the Mac and I think if i spend a month on it without going back to my PC I will prefer it but there's a lot of hype when it comes to how much better a Mac is than a PC.

yeah if youre just using it to send emails and look at porn/internet.

however, go into a major recording studio, game design studio, and i promise you wont see emachines lol the people who downplay macs, are the ones who do not use them for anything "pro" they just sit at home and compare them to pcs.

Real recording studios don't use macs. In fact the best audio cards can't be used with macs last I checked. As for the game design studio comment... That's funny considering macs are usually way behind when it comes to graphics cards. Real game design companies won't be using macs with outdated graphics cards. Not to mention most games don't even work with macs.

Macs are for amateurs or for semi-pro crap (recording), basically people who can't learn how to use a real PC.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems. I just got a mac after being a PC guy forever, and I find it really easy to use, and it has no trouble seeing my Internet connection or network. It sounds like a router issue as Jake mentioned earlier. Try rebooting it then connecting again and see if that fixes the problem for you.

Good luck!

Some of it is changing your thought process on how a computer works. Don't think about how you used to do it, think about how it should work.

Simple example:
To copy a picture from your browser to your desktop, don't right click, browse the menu, and choose and 'save image as'. Just drag it to the desktop.

Using your broken ass view of how a computer works might be holding you back from the ease of use that a Mac provides.

In iphoto, highlighting a picture and hitting the delete key moves it to iphoto's trash. So does dragging it to the trash can icon in iphoto.

The second you realize that you're Mac is NOT a PC (in the loosest form of the word...a Windows box)...is the second that you realize it is easier to use.

Thats very good advice.

To the OP:
Theres a reason why a Mac is not a PC/Windows. If it was why would there be a need for one.

And why would you run Vista or XP on a Mac is beyond me. There may be occasions where you need to. But buying a Mac to run Vista, why bother? You still deal with the same Windows crap UI the Windows is. It does not improve on a Mac.

My brother in law is a huge MAC guy - to the point of having the bumper sticker on all of his cars. Ironically, all of his MACs duel boot using the MAC OS and also Vista.

Complete nonsense. Plenty of professional recording studios use Power Macs with Pro Tools HD.

Final Cut Studio and Peter Jackson's King Kong proves you wrong. If you don't have an AVID setup...chances are you're using Final Cut Studio and Apple's Pro line Hardware.

Everytime I've been to a studio session or have seen one on video it's been Macs running Pro Tools

Diddy in a studio, Engineer on Mac
https://youtube.com/watch?v=8M8R_yY91Q8

Timbaland in the studio on a Mac
https://youtube.com/watch?v=CyElo...eature=related

Dr Dre in the studio with 50 cent and Eminem....Mac Pro
https://youtube.com/watch?v=lhAfmMX43_k

Butch Vig Nirvana's super producer uses a Mac Pro (now)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=APHX-9ZQ7x0

U2 and Will.I.Am in the studio.....iMacs
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Lg66QYyKZVk

Timbaland (Macbook and a Macbook Pro)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=XKJ0EdefCJQ

It's a lot harder to find studio sessions outside of the hip hop genre (U2, and Butch Vig all I could find) but I'm sure if you were able to find them you would see something similar.......an iMac, Mac Pro, or Macbook Pro controlling the final product.

And one visit to Apple's Final Cut Studio's website would render your graphics argument moot.

Professionals use whatever gets the job done. This is often what's familiar to them. Professionally I use a Core i7 running XP Pro 64-bit and Sony Vegas Pro 64-bit, and I don't have the slightest problem with stability or compatibility that these Mac-tards keep referring to. The machine has never needed a reboot, and it's very very fast.

Actually, I've had many PC's through the years and I've never had issues with any of them, being able to get my work done quickly and efficiently.

I also don't have any issues with the interface or 'ease of use'.

And I've spent plenty of time using Mac's, in fact I'm posting this from a Mac. But I'll take a Core i7 Windows XP machine any day of the week.

He might mean uber studios or real tech nerd ones.. not the one down the street. Apple work really hard to keep the design and music markets loyal, ie giving apples to artists and making them sign statements they won't say they were given to them to make it look like they chose to use the platform rather than it just be swag so apple can have creative cred. But most recording studios do use them... I can't say I've been into a $1000 an hour place though and there is no reason not to use PCs other than engineer familiarity so it's possible if you consider the crazy audio nerd cards out there.

Some of the graphics cards/cpu arrays proper mac video rigs use aren't anything to sneeze at though.. I remember one of them we used at the old place I worked being US$60k so although you don't get a lot of 3d work being done on them and much in the prosumer market they do have grunt at the very top professional end of the market... Although of course you may as well just use avid.

Man there are some dumb fucks here - As a hardcore graphics guy, audio designer (pro-tools, logic), 14 year pro video editor (AVID then FCP) and now webmaster/coder - As one of the RARE people who use macs and PC's side by side every day I actually deserve to post an opinion here - Also as someone who occasionally hangs out or works in major LA mainstream corporate big budget studios - let this fact be known: MAC is the nearly universal platform in most major studios and THE choice for hardcore audio and graphics professionals. ESPECIALLY power users - ALL the die hard PC lovers I have known and heard them talking shit about apple for the last decade have switched. I do love my XP machines, they have thier place - but NOT anything multi-media related. Sorry PC Peeps, Mac won.

And one visit to Apple's Final Cut Studio's website would render your graphics argument moot.
I never said there can't be a mac in the studio that clueless people can use. Music artists love them because they can't use real computers. Your post proved that. As for the videos the first one was just playing a file in the studio, they didn't show anything. One of the others it didn't look like it was part of the main system and one I think I saw a laptop. It's very rare to find one that's part of a real studio system. It's just like you said, "controlling the final product" to show people who can't use a real computer. So they can see it on the same type of overpriced computer they have at home. That doesn't mean it's being used for the main recording studio system.

Apple has always been behind on graphics cards get over it. They had a 8800GTX for the longest time (very outdated card) as the best option that was updated maybe a few months or so ago. Right now the best option I see is a 120 geforce. Click on the mac pro dual quad and you'll see "NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB" as best option. That video card fucking sucks. You're going to buy a $3,299.00 computer and get that crappy card? *cough* RIPOFF *cough* No fucking thanks.

As for pro cards such as the nvidia quadro they've always been behind too. Maybe they catched up lately but I doubt it.

Gaming companies aren't going to waste their time and money. If a new card comes out they need, I'm sure they don't want to worry if they can use it with their crappy overpriced apple. Not to mention most games are designed for windows or other systems with directx 10. If they want to test the game on the same computer I doubt they want to reboot to windows everytime. Macs can't run DirectX 10 or any DirectX I believe unless they use bootcamp, or some emu software which will be buggy, slow, and a waste of time for game developers.

Macs aren't any different than PCs anyway, just the OS which is basically bsd. Apple lovers are blind and always believe they are getting the BEST parts but that's not true. Apple has been caught selling TN panels in their monitors. Not all of their monitors but some of them. TN panels are the cheapest and crappiest kind of LCD Panels you can buy. I could go on and on about it but apple fans will just blindly follow apple and waste their money.

I bet the MacBook Wheel would sell like hot cakes.
