Doesn't change the fact that Murdoch's biz model is out of luck

Zell is a smart cookie too and he got hosed on his Tribune buy.

if i'm forced to make a judgment call between two people and their views on the situation... one being a proven idiot and one being a proven successful business person - i'll choose the successful business person by default. its like blackjack.. there are rules you follow, that may not be right all the time.. but they're right more often than they're wrong.

print media is on its way out. there is no question there. all these guys are scrambling, trying to save huge companies and 10's of 1000s of jobs. all they can do is follow certain paths and see where it leads.

its easy to criticize from a distance... its not so easy when you are sitting in a building full of 2000 employees and thinking about the future, them, their families and how one might try to stop the hull from leaking before the ship can't be saved from sinking at all.

No doubt. Sometimes it's tiring to point out the messenger on gfy though.

The print / media problem / failing ad revenue problem is worth hearing about from all industries...that's why I started reading gfy to see this side of the domain market / online ad market. If sex is a hard sell then

With print though, I think the model is clear(er)
1.) take the pain now rather than later (don't take the slow death of the us auto industry)
2.) use all exclusive content -- a defensible niche if you have to
3.) distribute AP replacement articles to bolster your brand for free -- like politico.
4.) Cut useless executives to get a flatter structure, after all they got you in the mess.

Radio TV and Newspapers are all out gone and are now history nothing will change that!

Ill break it down for you peeps (remember tons of these sectors are being held up by the elders in this population and as they die off so will these industries).

Radio before:

Old and young sitting in their cars sometimes even at home listening to regular radio, there was no internet so even news radio was common for young to listen to as well as talk radio not to mention stations that where music related. Even those who wouldnt listen much would at least tune in when they where in traffic to see whats up etc. Back in the day changing the station also meant finding it on the dial in the center console of your car.

Radio now: young population in their car listens to ipods, some are busy texting and for traffic updates well you know whats up using online cams or in mid way you can look it up in two seconds without tuning to a radio station to maybe catch an update. Now changing the dial means a click on your steering wheel, easier to tune away when the ads come.

TV before: young and old sitting at the TV, no other form of entertainment shy of wanting to play some gameboy or chess, even when the net started because of the slow connections it wouldn’t be an option to most for entertainment as it would be annoying, people would watch TV enjoy it, was no text messaging to go to or checking your email on your cell phone when commercials came and there wasnt 5 million channels, nightly news was always something even those who where busy they would watch the 10oclock news.

TV now: You watch it when you have no more energy to type, remember the days you would go to bed and be up an hour + or so watching TV till you fell asleep? Now you go to bed you turn on the TV (if you even do that) and within 5 minutes you are out.

Finally when commercials come on you either fast forward them because you are watching something you prerecorded or you go to your computer or smart phone etc. (imagine how well commercial did before there was tivo and remote control) fair to say if your internet dies youd rather start browsing thru your small phone then going to the TV to watch a live show on your 50 inch plasma, as far as nightly news? what news? you know the news for the next 5 days just hanging out on gfy.

Newspapers before: everyone would pick one up, every other person on your block would get one delivered every AM, by the time the day was over you read the ads the news the classifieds (even the classifieds that dont effect you)

Newspapers now: 3 kind of people pick up newspapers

Old fuckers: dieing off quick
People with no money seeking jobs
Kids who think its cool to sit on the train with a WSJ or NY times

Regardless of what, they are not needed and are dieing and nothing will save that nothing nada ziltch!

All the above have one thing in common their biggest source of income comes from advertisers.

Yes some people have used radio tv and newspapers to build a huge company but for the most part most people lose their pants, the net is a safer better bet for most businesses.

But even those big companies who will continue to advertise on TV, they will pay 80% less of what they use to pay forcing many to go out of business.

Already GE's advertising div. announced a 49% in ad revenues for last qtr.

To me being honest with yourself in business is a must, see id rather bullshit myself and say for example paysite conversions will come back etc but they wont it aint happening, so they key is to seek out what will be the new trend (not what is the current trend as by the time your done joining it its over), being optimistic is cool as long as you are realistic.

Those who yell the most about thinking positive are the same people waiting in line at your local court house, they are submitting their bankruptcy papers, when the bank called them about their mothly payment they told the rep "think positive and it will show up".

The Internet isn?t killing the news business any more than TV killed radio or radio killed the newspaper. Incumbent business leaders in news haven?t been keeping up. Many leaders continue to help push the business into the ditch by wasting ?resources? (management speak for talented people) on recycling commodity news. Reader habits are changing and vertically curated views need to be meshed with horizontal read-around ones.

Blaming the new leaders or aggregators for disrupting the business of the old leaders, or saber-rattling and threatening to sue are not business strategies ? they are personal therapy sessions. Go ask a music executive how well it works.

It will have to go to a paid model eventually. Advertising will not pay for it and that's the only reason many give away content to get traffic. The traffic costs money and if it does bring more advertising to the site the site runs at a loss,

Escort Biz you don't get it. You can't compare newpapers to music. One is often background music the other is what keeps you informed on what big companies, Governments and individuals are doing. Newspapers are the best at this. Lose them and the general public end up knowing less.

Comparing this to the latest hip hop track on your ipod is foolish.

LOL, I think he gets it and gets it well. The subject is "change" and some peoples unwillingness to change or adapt when "change" comes.

EB has very accurate and historic breakdown of what people really dont want to hear. Adapt to "change" or you will be filling BK at your local court house.

Now here's something.
For your $150 subscription per year, you throw each subscriber a kindle, and deliver your newspaper to that each day.

Now there's embracing technology.

So music is the same as learning in depth what the Government is doing, what is going on in Afghanistan and cases like Watergate?

You must be joking.

If the world loses newspapers it loses a protection against people who want to bend, abuse or ignore the system and law. There are lots of cases like Wat6ergategate every year. The newspapers are the only ones who can investigate because they have the profits. Clearly the free Internet news can't.

listen you been late to the party with tons of shit in adult because you lived your life a certain way and until it wasnt shoved down your throat that the industry has moved on you didnt start doing anything.

anyone over 40 should be kicked out of any position in any business involving making decisions for the future, you people fail to understand how the new generation works and how they spend their money.

you are still busy thinking that proper grammar and spelling is the key to success.

again newspapers are history and done.

Sorry for being old, but seeing what all you young guys have done to the porn industry does not fill me with confidence.

Maybe newspapers are history, the problem is what will replace them. Nothing on the Internet come close to doing what they do. As I said it's newspapers that investigate corruption at the top and the other news mediums that copy their reporting. But you failed to address that point, like many on the boards when asked a question they can't answer. So can you and can you think through to the consequences?

I think newspapers are probably gone and think it's a sad thing and takes away another tool of democracy.

His sites, his choice.

It's his attempts to end net neutrality and close down competing sites that worry me.

LOL I'm not sure you have actually bothered to take a look at the new profitable investigative internet-only web sites that are BREAKING news on a daily basis. Shorter -- better articles for the web, along with longer pieces of investigations.

You haven't considered outlets that work off public funding such as NPR and the BBC etc.

Newspapers will be dead b/c the bulk of what they print is recycled wire news from AP, Reuters, UPI etc... that model can not exist anymore given the sheer size of the major news organizations NYT, WSJ, LAT.

In addition, although people are talking about newspapers, we have yet to talk about how the Internet has changed the way people consume news -- now television and radio directly compete on the same medium with newspapers -- that's led to MULTIMEDIA orgs -- TV stations have both newscasts and written local news -- same with radio stations that are still around.

News is not dying -- just newspapers are dying -- and that will further the sunshine on all areas of life -- for better or worse there will be few secrets.

I disagree with EscortBiz, it's not yoru age that is leading to a faulty conclusion it is your nostalgia.

Great point, but I think EB was generalizing. Generally older people resist change the most, refuse to accept newer technologies and easier ways to do things.

If you just think about today only, you will never set your self apart from the rest of the pack. You need to be thinking about tomorrow if you want to really make it. And if you are waiting for things to go back to the way things were, you will really be in for a serious disappointment.
