How The Music Industry is Surviving Piracy

I read this in the economist this morning. It really does provide some great food for thought.

http://www.economist.com/opinion/dis...ry_id=14845177

Well worth the read.

Here is the summation for those who don't want to read the whole article.

All of this offers a lesson for other types of media, such as films and video games. Piracy thrives because it satisfies an unmet demand. The best way to discourage it is to offer a diverse range of attractive, legal alternatives. The music industry has taken a decade to work this out, but it has now done so. Other industries should benefit from its experience?and follow its example.

..and when that doesn't work, you have billions upon billions of dollars to sue the living fuck out of anything you perceive as a threat.

But, think about it logically. Does Karen O really care that I downloaded her tracks for free? She goes around giving away alms to people, anyway. Arf!!! Arf!!!

The industry may be surviving but it is on life support. In recent memory there have been releases that made it on the billboard top 10 selling well under 100,000 copies. If it was the mid 90s or even 2001, those same albums wouldn't crack the top 20.

Well, the article "forgot" to mention something important. The "success" of TDC music portal for their subscribers, is also because the same ISP is blocking DNS access to illegal sites

I think the most important is not how to survive, but that you have the right to survive. If you make a music number by yourself to sell online, no one should force you away from doing it, and it doesn't really matter if it is piracy or some big company forcing you. You should have the right to do what you want, and you should have proper legal protection to run such business.

I would like to see something like Spotify brought to the US.

Even if they do I think it is only a matter of time until the typical record contract also includes the record label getting a share of touring and merchandise from the artists.
