Photos of the Oil Rig Disaster from the adjacent rig

My friend Mikey is a specialized electrician who works on the rigs out in the gulf.

Here are some pictures he took of the rig the night it happened and then the following day before it went under-

I think he should send them in to CNN as part of that I-reporter thing they do.

In the last few you can actually see the thing going down.

If there's one good thing about facebook I was able to know within moments of hearing the reports on the news that he was ok / not on the rig that blew.

Well, I know if you start a grease / oil fire in the kitchen water is the last thing you should put on it, doesn't put it out just spreads it around.

I mean, I guess they know what they are doing, just doesn't make alot of sense.

Interesting pics. I heard an "expert in containment" interviewed this morning that claimed the rig should have been allowed to burn as it would still be burning off much of the oil that is now being pumped into the ocean. He also said that it was the firefighting boats that so heavily flooded the rig that caused it to sink. Maybe truth...maybe not...but both points do have some logic when one thinks about it.

He also stated that atempting to burn the oil at sea would have little affect and attempts to skim would have little affect. He went on to say that an attempt to seal it with underwater vehicles would fail. He stated that the only viable way to seal it off would be to put in place another rig and slant drill into the shaft of the desytroyed rig and pump material into it to seal it off. He said this would take a minimum of three months or longer.

This seems strange to me. Oil needs to be pretty hot to burn, doesn't it? I heard on CNN that the oil slick is over a mile DEEP. Won't the oil underwater remain unburned? And won't the surface cool as the oil spreads, leaving most of it unburned as well?

The oil slick is not over a mile deep the oil rig was pumping/drilled for oil that was more than a mile below the surface...and I assume when the rig collasped and sunk it snapped the line off somewhere below the surface. My assumption may be wrong...and I do not think that anyone knows exactly what happened at this point...other than it is a blowout that is pumping approximately 200,000 gals of crude into the ocean.

Wow, to see those images is heartbreaking. The loss of life and the years of repercussions from this happening is mind blowing. They are amazing pictures though.

IMO it was an action by the US to leech more money out of us citizens because they're (the gov't) broke as fuck.

this is just going to get worse and worse. It is now reaching the Louisiana wetlands and with the tides, waves and wind they say it will continue to push inland. Sad stuff.

I find it odd that we have had a perfect record for drilling rigs for a long time, Obama announces we're going to get more rigs and one goes up in smoke less than a month later.
Sort of like during debate for healthcare, Blue Sheild announces a 39% increase.

Fucking awesome pictures. Those things are fucking huge.

One of my friends from college works on a ship that tends to these huge riggs and pulls up next to them and helps them drill new holes or something. She's in charge of all of the electronics on the ship.

I have an odd question.

Who operates those fire ships? Is it a special entity that operates in the Gulf in case of situations like this? Coast Guard?

This is such a catastrophe. I don't think most of the country realizes what a big deal this is. There was an offshore spill off our coast maybe 20 years ago, no where near this size, we had oil balls washing up on the beaches for 2 years afterwards. You would get oil all onver the bottoms of your feet, tons of dead fish and birds. awful. To this day if you go scuba diving off the coast, you only need to brush away like an inch of sand and there is still a thick black crust of petrolium.

That's what I told him. Might be too late for him to cash in now.

Don't be such a Glenn Beck - there's been very little drilling BECAUSE of a rig spill:
