Video/Webcam Question

So I've been using my Sony HDV camcorder (which records to MiniHDV and connects to my PC via firewire) to shoot my live shows so that I'm able to archive a high quality version. But my camera just crapped out on me! I'm torn with what to do right now because I have a little bit of an issue. I already have another Sony HD Hard Drive camcorder, but chat programs won't recognize it as a webcam since it uses a USB and not a firewire connection. I don't really want to buy a new camera that uses tapes only because it has a firewire connection.

I don't have time to do my own research right now...my grandfather (who raised me so he's pretty much my father) just had a stroke and I'm having to spend a lot of time down in LA with him. So I'm resorting to asking here since a lot of you know a lot about cameras and all that. I guess my questions are the following...

Does a camera exist yet that records via hard drive or flash and also has a firewire connection?

Is there a way to get chat programs to recognize a USB connected camera?

Do you have a better fix?

Thanks so much for helping me out. Like I said, I don't have time to research this myself right now and I have a live show scheduled in a week so I need to find a solution asap. Also, some info you may want to know in terms of what I'm using...I currently do my live shows on the Camz network and my HD Hard Drive camera (which I'd like to use if possible) is a Sony HDR-SR10.

Thanks again!

Jelena

Unfortunately it's not the connector that's an issue...it's more that the camera, when plugged in via USB, isn't able to work as a camera. Thanks though!

Strange that your chat programs do not recognise the USB. I always have trouble with them noticing the firewire.

You have checked your settings on the camera?

For now, I would use the camera as a webcam & forget filming as you can usually film the show through the pc & livecam network.

BTW, Have you not got house insurance to get the same camera. Usually insurance companies dont mess about if its like for like.

I'm very sorry to hear about your Grandfather, I hope he has a speedy recovery. Strokes do take time to heal from and I'll say prayers that he comes through it good as new.

you could use a usb video capture device and just connect component out of the camera you have to the component input of the video capture device.

Slightly off topic, but none the less - I reviewed your site today and was totally stunned. Out of the 100s of solo girl sites I've reviewed, you're one of the 2 or 3 that still actively do webcam shows.

Plus, your archive was ludicrously large.

96/100. Thanks for giving porn a good name

Best is to connect your camera through a external or internal video capture card using an composite or S-video cable combined with a program called "split cam". This will give you all you want.

In the Flash player you select Split cam as video source assuming the live chat site you are working with is using Flash techno.

Maybe its even better to search for a SONY EVI (PTR) cam on Ebay, this cam is the best for live cam shows.

The Sony HDR-SR10 does not support "USB streaming" so using it as a webcam via USB is not an option.

It should be possible with an HDMI capture card like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Des.../dp/B001CN9GEA

Take a look at this review: http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Des.../dp/B001CN9GEA

The only disk-based camcorder that has Firewire apparently are the JVC Everio GZ MG255 , and the GZ MG155 ( camcorders in those series come with that Everio Dock which has iLink/Firewire. The other Everio cams do not have this docking station/firewire AFAIK).
Neither one is HD. No guarantee it'll work for your particular situation since that Everio Dock is kind of a workaround.

Other than that you are not going to find a lot of non-tape based camcorders that have Firewire. The point of having Firewire on a camcorder was to properly capture tapes.
Since you don't capture anything on disk-based camcorders there is no need (usually) for Firewire.

I'm sure you shouldn't have a problem getting someone to take a look at it

Just beware so they don't have the same intentions as some pizza delivery guys do
