Okay, after getting some Windsor information I'm looking to get some feedback from people living in Ottawa, Victoria and Vancouver.

If you can, please, give some sort of information that PR_Glen did.

Thank You.

Positives:

-If you have work already all the NO JOBS problems don't affect you in the least.

-Cheap rent, but also VERY cheap deals on homes too so what my dad payed for a 2 bedroom split level in Oakville you can buy a 4 bedroom with a pool out here...

-Close to detroit, most think this as a negative but the downtown core is perfectly safe during the day because cops are everywhere so nobody is doing stupid shit there. Comerica, ford field, hockeytown cafe, joe louis arena are all within a block or two of eachother and all things can be reached by tunnel bus, there and back so easy enough to get some entertainment in

- if sports isn't your thing there are some cool theatres that have good concerts and shows all year long, just as good as the ones they have in TO, sometimes better. Also really nice casinos on either side of the boarder if that is your thing.

- michigan is underrated for its nature but there are places to ski, tube down a river, camp all withing an hours drive of windsor so its not like you have to drive 3 hours up to muskoka to get to it like in TO. Also some really nice golf courses for good prices these days.

-redbull air races... fun as hell to watch i don't care who you are...

Negatives:

-No work, so if you or your gf/wife need to find some work it is pretty scarce, maybe the worst in canada, however it is getting better and wont be like this forever...

-It is an industrial town, so although there are attempts at expanding cultural aspects of this city it is still pretty lacking on that comparing to most bigger cities.

-Not all that many parks.. the % are pretty low around here but there are provincial parks in the surrounding areas within 45 minute drives so as long as you don't mind the drive there is stuff to get to.

-construction.. is endless.. roads roads and more roads.. just an ongoing thing for the last ten years, but this is the worst. That would have to get better though right? ;)

-close to detroit... it is safe on this side.. gang members can't cross borders.. they have records.. the wannabe thugs hit downtown very rarely but there hasn't been an incident in a while now so its not worth worrying about. When driving in detroit you should probably use google maps because you don't have to go too far off the grid to end up in a ghetto area..

-polution, worst air quality in canada, but toronto is not that much better so if you can stomach it there you can last anywhere...

Vancouver is the best, but many people overextended and working to pay their rent, everything is expensive

you can smell pot smoke often

mild weather year round

very high asian and south asian population percentage, so lots of cultural influences from there (eg. turn your radio dial and you are just as likely to hear punjabi language as you are english), good ethnic restaurants if you are into those foods

Vancouver:

Awesome natural beauty
great people
tons of stuff to do outside
decent transit options

Not much night life scene if that's your thing
lots of rain
very diverse population
VERY expensive to live (groceries/gas/rent)
not a lot of ambition like the east coast has
traffic is terrible

So... it's kinda up to you.

For the Western world, Vancouver is definitely my #1 choice. Probably the most expensive, especially if you live downtown, but there's a reason for that. If I ever move back to Canada, it'll definitely be Vancouver.

Why not do something crazy, and move out to SE Asia? I'm currently sitting here in a city in NE Thailand, and couldn't be happier. This will probably be one of the most memorable periods of my life. Price is right too. $150/month for a really nice, 2 storey, 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. :-)

if you're considering Windsor go take a look at London, Ontario. Small very nice city, when i say small i don't mean some hick town, it's about 400K population, halfway between Toronto and Windsor.

Missisauga looks ok. The Beaches in Toronto too.

Ottawa..

Ottawa is the place for government jobs. However, many of these jobs require you to speak both english and french. There isn't many factories here. A few hi tech places and the service industry is always busy..

For rent, you'd probably be looking at 900-1400 a month for a 2 bedroom apartment. depends if you want to live downtown or not, the closer to downtown the more expensive. I live in the west end and rent a 3 bedroom townhouse for 1100/month.

Close to Quebec..i don't know if this is a postive but they have cheaper beer than Ontario and Montreal is only 2 hours or so away.

Its a pretty clean city and easy to get around, when not during rush hour you can get from one end of the city to the other in 15-20 minutes.

There isn't really all that much to do in ottawa itself, you have museams and touristy still like parliment hill but many concerts skip the city. lots of irish pubs and lots of girls, as there are a couple of univerisities here. lots of parks, bike paths, etc.

The biggest downside i'd say is the cold. i do find it noticibly colder than say, windsor.
