Al Gore Mea Culpa: Support for Corn-Based Ethanol Was a Mistake:

"Now he tells us. Al Gore says his support for corn-based ethanol subsidies while serving as vice president was a mistake that had more to do with his desire to cultivate farm votes in the 2000 presidential election than with what was good for the environment.

"It is not a good policy to have these massive subsidies for first-generation ethanol," Gore said at a green energy conference in Athens, Greece, according to Reuters. First generation refers to the most basic, energy-intensive process of converting corn to ethanol for use as a motor vehicle fuel additive.

Former Vice President Al GoreOn reflection, Gore said the energy conversion ratios -- how much energy is produced in the process -- "are at best very small." "One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee," he said, "and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for president."

Federal ethanol subsidies reached $7.7 billion last year, Reuters said, and the bio-fuel industry faced criticism in 2008 as food prices rose with ethanol consuming ever more of the corn crop and drawing down feedstocks. Gore now favors second-generation ethanol, using farm waste and switchgrass to produce the fuel.

Growth Energy CEO Tom Buis, representing ethanol producers, took issue with Gore on Tuesday. "The contributions of first generation ethanol to our nation's economy, environment and energy production are not a mistake, but a success story," he said in a statement.

On the political front, Gore said he was not optimistic that Congress would pass a clean energy bill or climate legislation over the next two years with Republicans in control of the House of Representatives."

I saw some story on the news yesterday, that because of the ethanol production , food costs are going to go up drastically in 2011. Hope we get plenty of mileage out of it ethanol wise.

The capacity to admit a mistake is one of the signs of maturity and responsibility. Let's see if any republicans admit their mistakes in the future, because as far as I can remember, they sure havn't admitted mistakes as of yet. Much like guilty children.

If anyone can point out examples of republicans admitting mistakes, please do.

Corn ethanol was a mistake, as are most ethanols until we get desperate for liquid fuels, which we will before most of us here die. All of the scientists looking at the EROI said it was a mistake, but when gas was over $4 a gallon the people started agitating for solutions, especially american solutions, and corn ethanol was the only thing on the shelf.

There simply is no good liquid fuel substiture with anything like the EROI of petroleum. We will only use the alternative liquid fuels when we are forced to, and when that time comes only the military will be able to afford the power and conveinience of petroleum and fossil carbon fuels. The government and the wealthy will have to make do with the inherent deficiencies of alcohols and plant oils.

What mistakes did they admit?

I'm too busy reading science sources to spend a lot of time reading politicians. I did acknowledge I might not know, and asked for examples.

I know it's pointless to explain to you why your comment about "drilling the oil reserves we have" misunderstands the amount of oil reserves on american territory, but I have no objection to your side allowing the oil mulinationals to drill anywhere they want.

It means we will have no emergency reserve of american oil when the inevitable war with asia occurs, but american insecurity is irrelevant compared to your right to drive.

However, if you research the numbers on american oil reserves, you will discover why drill baby drill wont help.

Here's a place to start. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_reserves Note the number of reserves attributed to the united states, and compare that to the amount of oil used per year by the united states.

But, as far as I'm concerned, as I said, you can have the multinats drill baby drill. The laws for extraction are very lenient right now, and there are relatively few restrictions on the oil companies, which you will discover if you research the issue.

what where his lies, specifically? that might actually be of some interest.

people who study liquid fuels said all along that corn ethanol had too low an EROI to be worth doing except as an emergency fuel, so when I saw snippets of gore saying corn ethanol was a mistake, my reaction was "well duh - at an EROI of 1-to-1 to 1.85-to-1, of course it was a mistake".

so, be specific, and provide source quotes - what were his lies please?

I'd support prosecuting him if he lied for personal benefit, exactly as I support prosecuting other politicians who did or do the same.
