how do I know if someone is hotlinking my images?

you have to check your logs, usually you can see it with log analyzer like webalizer or something similar.

Study up on the .htaccess file assuming that you are using a Unix/Linux host.

Your hosting service can advise you.

Make a htaccess file and add this.

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://w*\.*yourdomain.com
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://w*\.*yourip
RewriteRule .*[Jj][Pp][Gg]$|.*[Gg][Ii][Ff]$ http://www.yourbannerpage.com [R,L]

This way if a hot linker tries to hot link an image then they get your banner or page that you want them to see. Might be a good way to get more traffic

I dont know much about htaccess so I would read as much as you can about it. Then make it the way you want it.
