Writing cookies once passed .htaccess

I know how to write cookies.. but how do I grab the login name and store it?

The login name is passed as an environmental variable by the browser as: REMOTE_USER. In perl it's $ENV{'REMOTE_USER'} in php you should grab it as getenv('REMOTE_USER'), dunno about javascript or reg stuff tho.

wouldnt do it in javascript for security reasons, php/perl is the way to go, let me know if you are looking for programers
