Where to sell content?

I have a few couples that are wanting to sell a movie a week, and stills. I've googled through, and can't find any content providers that look extremly trustworthy.

Where can I go to sell content and deal with professional businessmen? I don't have much desire to deal with fly-by-nights. Sure, their money spends just the same, but I'd like to do this for the long term, and dealing with professionals is always best.

I spent a few weeks looking for places to sell my content to. Resellers, who would offer either a percentage or a set price per set. The thing is, the percentage was usualyl about 50% (sometimes less) and the price per set wasn't great. In a week of selling my own content non-exclusively, I have made more money than I would have gotten selling the exclusive rights to *half* of it to a reseller.

There are a lot of sites out there that will link to content providers, even small ones. My advice is to put together a license, and a web page about your content, to advertise it to webmasters. Then submit to a bunch of webmaster resource sites.

It's late, so I don't feel like listing a ton here... On the right side of my content page at http://www.blood-dolls.com/content.html you can find the places I found today.

Thanks for the advice, gothweb. I noticed the same thing. People who were advertising that they would buy exclusive rights are paying very little as opposed to the prices webmasters will pay for some fresh content.

It's a job where I'll be better off doing it myself. Work is directly proportionate to making money.

Sounds like a good plan to me. People like us, who take this route, will not make as much money right away, as we have to actually sell sets to get paid for them, but in the end we can make a lot more than if we sell exclusive rights to a reseller.

I am totally new to this, but I am finding it very interesting. My background is in running paysites based on my content. One interesting part of it is that you are selling to webmasters, not to viewers. That changes just about everything. So far, I have liked being able to work personally with someone to work out a deal.

Speaking of running paysites.. Have you thought of making sites based on this content, rather than selling it to webmasters?

Yeah, I mulled over the idea, but it really isn't something that I'd like to do. The competition is pretty fierce out there, and some of you guys run damn impressive sites.

I still don't know this business very well, but I'm an old school salesman, and selling 600gigs of video to a major webmaster is just like any other business deal.

Here's a related topic that may be more specifically relevant now... Where are good places to let it be known that you have content available? Can anyone recommend places where small content providers like us migth want to go?

So far, I am mostly working on word of mouth. I have submitted my content page to a variety of resource sites, and I am hoping to see a little traffic from them, but I have a feeling that may not be the best way to go. When you look for content that isn't on a thousand sites, that is of real quality, where do you go? Because I get the feeling, that's where I want to be. ;)

I have begun to think that a reseller would be a very bad idea for me. Most of them seem to offer about 50% of sales, and many want to set their own prices and other terms. While I might make it up in volume, my main worries are...

a) They offer only half of the selling price as my commission. I firmly believe that a creative professional should make more money from his own work than a middleman should for selling it.

b) Their estimates of how much money their best providers will make per month is quite a bit less than I have made in the last week by word of mouth alone. As such, I am not sure I see what they add.

c) Some will ask to set the price. This means I cannot compete with them selling my own content, as they will undercut me wit my own stuff. I don't like that at all, especially when I might only get a percentage of the low price they offer my content for.

d) Some providers seem to ask for pretty broad rights. At least one has wanted outright ownership of my photos, offering me a license to use them in return. I don't think so!

e) There is no upfront payment to make this worth my while. If I give my content to someone else to sell, I have to wait for it to make money. In cases where I can't (by contract or realism) compete with the reseller, I can't work to make my content sell more.

f) People who pay up front have been offering less for exclusive resale rights, per set, than I have gotten licensing my sets to individuals. I almost fell for it, too!

So, with that in mind, I guess I wasn't really asking where I might try to find a reseller for my content. What I mean is, where might be a good place to promote my content, which I am selling myself?

Check out my sig, Buy or sell your content.
  • We advertise to potential buyers in many ways including print and online.
  • We allow the buyer to see exactly what he/she will be getting; no text-only descriptions with one or two samples that leave buyers wondering if they should purchase your content. We have full thumbnails of every image and we clearly list prices and limitations/rights to the content.
  • We will handle all the finances for you (up to $300 per sale). This means we will accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, online checks, money orders, cashiers checks and personal checks on your behalf and send you a payment from our bank account. In other words, we remove the risk of chargebacks to you while, at the same time, giving you more payment options.
  • We will do all the work for you including creating webpages, thumbnailing your images, creating samples, digitizing video content, and more. (There is a small storage media fee if you need copies of digital video sent to you or if you need DVD-quality video).
  • We charge no setup fees, only a percentage of sales. Most of the clients we sork with have a 25% commion. This percentage is handled on a case-by-case basis depending on your prices and the copyrights you are selling to the content. Our fee/percentage will be negotiated with you prior to our doing any setup work.

Some questions...

- What happens with orders over $300? I haven't had a sale yet under $1000...

- By 25%, do you mean the content creator gets 25% of each sale, or 75%?

- Realisically, how do your content providers do in terms of income through you?

This is an interesting thread!

I am also slowly setting up my own "content store".

What kind of payment and distribution options do you suggest? Fully functional shop-basket system or just a "mail me what you want to buy" system?

I am going for a personal touch, not an automated system... As such, my system is super simple. Potential customers/clients send me an email. Then we chat in ICQ for a while. Then they email me a list of the sets they want. I email them a contract. They mail it to me with a check. I send them their stuff, at the resolutions they want.

Contact me by aim/icq if you are looking for a website to sell your contant at, I think that selling directly you can make a lot more than just selling it to resellers.

I can provide you with your own site, and can take care of other details such as payment etc.

I didn't say I can't find someone I can trust-- or if I did, that isn't how I meant it at all. What I mean is that so far, I haven't found a reseller who's offer was worth my while. I hope the fact that I am looking for a deal I feel good about doesn't somehow make me untrustworthy... There wouldn't be anyone left in the industry to work with!

I sell my content through 7 resellers during last three years. Currently I've worked successfully with Dave Clark from Web-legal.com and David Lace only. I think web-legal is the best place for reselling adult content. And they pay accuracy
