Another thread reminded me of probably my biggest pet peeve, people using the 's when it is not possessive. Like "I am going to visit the website's." "I am going to buy some apple's."
I was thinking of the ESL thing after reading this thread. We don't want to scare away people whose first language is not English. If it is obvious they are ESL then a typo doesn't bother me. It's when people who obviously grew up speaking English make basic mistakes constantly that it drives me crazy and I wonder what went wrong. |

"April 2005, Russia. A stolen SUV speeds through the icy streets of MozzCgawww..." I ever meet that guy he will get fucking TOLD how to pronounce Moscow properly. :321GFY |
Agreed! And why are there so many posters who forget the basic rules of semicolon usage? Unlettered Barbarians! It is abundantly clear that one needs to separate two sentences where there is an absence of a conjunction with this device, yet one repeatedly is forced to endure sentences wherein the semicolon is not properly employed! Philistines! Surely the sight of your fellow posters writhing in the agony induced by your poor grammar will compel you to mend your ways. I certainly hope so; however, he that lives upon hope will die fasting.

The misuse of "then" and "than" are probably the mistakes, I see on GFY almost daily. With ESL people, you might get something like a wrong tense or bad use of a preposition, but again that is understandable, as most of us did not grow up writing in English. The mistakes that we see here every day; are most likely from English speakers that just canīt be bothered to spell right. |
Names are the worst, if someone can't spell a name properly and they are trying to make a point, then I just can't take them seriously.
The others which I find funny are people ranting about something and gets to a point where they resort to things like "fuck of, you fuckin retord" I just laugh at them. Part of the problem with English is The amount of accents and slang we have in the UK, Canada, US and Australia, South African English speakers, and all the other English first language nations. Different spelling in each country aswell. Colour and Color just being one of them, Herbs being Herbs in the UK and Australia but Erbs in Canada and the US. I used to work with people from eastern Europe and lots of them spoke good English, I noticed all of them were taught "proper" English and were shocked at all the slang etc. I also worked with a guy from Madrid and he told me there is no slang in Spanish, not 100% that is true but if it is then I can understand how much easier Spanish must be in that respect. I was also taught German at school and although I'm not fluent I found it extremely easy to learn because of the structure of the language made it easier for me. I think English although it is quite an easy language to learn, has too many variants, slangs, and differences and that is where all the bad grammar comes from. Also, English Speakers tend to be lazy with their language and that is where some problems come from aswell I think. |
