Beginner's gear setup to start filming porn?

Hey, I've never filmed a video before but would like to make one. What do I need to get started? I'm not looking for professional quality content. I'm looking to make something where, if someone had to pay a membership fee for it, they'll be OK with the quality

Also, any recommendations on a place to learn filmography or any knowledge needed to make a proper film?

Thanks in advance!

What country do you live in?

For example in Australia you could go here to learn filmography:

https://www.aftrs.edu.au/course-types/short-courses/

There may be something similar in your country.

Mastering photography and a camera is only one of many ingredients that make someone good at producing good porn though. A natural eye is often referred to when talking about good producers, meaning they know what works well and how to set those scenes up.

One thing though: the number of people who want to shoot porn far exceed the number of people who can shoot porn and the number of people who can shoot porn far exceeds by an order of magnitude the number of people who make a living shooting porn.

The main thing you need is a lot of money because the chances of making a profit selling memberships to any start up site are very small.

Shooting amateur porn is pretty easy, all you need is a camera, lights, probably a mic and location. Models can cost anything from $200 to $1,000. You can calculate on 40-50 scenes being the minimum it takes to get a site off the ground with any chance of surviving. Then continuous updates. Launching a site in 2019 is very expensive, doing it as a newbie well good luck to you.

The most important thing to ask yourself is what idea or twist do you have in mind to make your site different from all the others?

For amateur stuff, a decent HD camera, lighting, and a mic. You'll need to shoot a lot of scenes to get the site off the ground.

Don't let anyone deter you from trying. Chase your goals! It's possible to get something started and be successful in 2019, you just have to have quality content and a good marketing strategy.

Which video is that?

You can send it via a personal message if you don't want to reveal it here.

All you need is a cell phone. Cell phones today has better quality than what Paul Markham was shooting in the 90s.

When you talk about the quality, if you are trying to shoot generic porn, you are not only up against the big boys with big budgets, but you are also competing against a slick and polished product.

I think to begin with you are much better off trying to start out within a micro niche. That way you can present yourself and a genuine fan whos had a go at producing your own stuff and the excuses not having top end equipment to do it with...

I did a guide some time ago - dunno if you ever saw it, but its HERE if you want to read it...

Although its old now, the principles haven't changed much - However where I talk a lot about forums, that's not so much the case these days, however what you could do now, that I could do then was to just blast my stuff all over social media. It didn't really exist back then..

sounds weird but true - a good smartphone and a gimbal (stabilizing for video) would be nowadays enough to start if you go for amateur style.

For pictures at some point you will want to use a real camera with optical zoom cause the digital zoom in phones usually sucks.

add in two LED video lights and you're good to go

also forget about opening a site, go to all the platforms out there like manyvids, clips4sale, Pornhub Premium, xHamster Premium etc and build chanels/followers there.

Amazing advice

I would add, that you should go ahead and get a domain name that you could use in the future as a paysite, and use it as a traffic hub for your project. That way, as you create your videos that your going to be posting everywhere it's watermarked with a central URL that you own. Start building your brand from the start, then when and if your ever ready to take that next step of having a paysite, your site's already built for you, you just have to add billing

Lot's of great videos on youtube about shooting good quality video on a shoe string, but you always are going to want to buy the best equipment that you can afford at the time.

Watch the local markets for used equipment. I talked to a guy 3 months ago that got a couple Nikon D3200 with multiple len's, lot's of memory cards, and a 3 point lighting system off of craigslist for $400.

With 4K almost required for professional work any more, there is a lot of good HD level equipment that can be had pretty cheap, and would still work great for amature/small niche. Most of the stuff on c4s is still at or below 1080p! I still make money on the 480p videos that were shot years ago, the key is picking a good niche and sticking too it

Good Luck

and one more thing:

Don't shoot a single picture/video without proper documentation (IDs, model releases) - you will need that when you upload to some of the plattforms and if all goes wrong, you can still license the content.

Be as precise as humanely possible with the documentation.

If you need a good sound guy, let me know.

Also, I can share some advice that I got from an industry pro when I was first starting out in film - "The best camera to use is the one you already have."

and a steady hand

tbh, camera work or angles all come naturally and isn´t something you learn...

the lighting, sound and picture quality is down to money. But to film the right style of video is most important, you want to make the porn different, maybe like a book, have a beginning middle and end, and as with my vids, Gary always comes up from my feet or heads across from some background feature, I always say hi, unless it´s a party or gangbang and then I could be busy with the guys already

Oh how the business has changed. We now recommend manyvids, clips4sale, Pornhub Premium, xHamster Premium etc. As a way to make money.

Marketing is very important. Are the models able to speak English and new? If so you can use them to tap into a good stream of marketing. Get a models release that covers you using her stage name to promote the material, then use that name to create a profile and market her as someone who's online telling everyone about her adventures making a porn film. Or as a boy if it's the gay niche you're in.

It's just similar to what is happening in mainstream - production companies putting their content on Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Amazon Prime etc

Agree. I just made the comment on how much the industry has changed. 10 years ago people would be advising to open a site.

The OP needs to come up produce good content to make any money on manyvids, clips4sale, Pornhub Premium, xHamster Premium etc. To make enough money to covers production costs.

Not sure how Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime level work but I assume they have a filter on who gets published. Youtube allow anyone within their rules to submit and try to make money. As do manyvids, clips4sale, Pornhub Premium, xHamster Premium etc.

Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are film distribution companies, not just sites. They are an important part of the film industry and their involvement with a film is considerably more significant than just allowing "anyone within their rules to submit."

When you watch a film, the distributor's name is in the credits. They are, to a large extent, taking responsibility for every film they distribute. Even if they aren't in some way involved in the production (which all three of the aforementioned do produce their own content now), they are attaching their names to the film, with all of the rights and responsibilities that that entails.

They actually have to pay for the license to distribute a film. As such, they are invested in its success. Not that Clips4Sale and PornHub don't want people to view their posters' vids, but with the volume that they do, a lot of videos can go unwatched and it doesn't affect their bottom line. If a film distribution company pays for a film and nobody buys it, they are out that money. So, yes, they definitely have to choose carefully what they do and don't distribute. And it's way more than just a "filter." It's one of the vagaries of the whole film industry which makes it such a challenge to become a successful part of.

If you produce a film, you have to convince a distributor that it has value to the market and that it will sell. Small, independent productions don't generally command a high license fee, but there is still money involved, and decisions still have to be made on what gets shown. SPOILER ALERT: Not everything does. For every rotten movie that you wonder how it got made and how it got to the point where you saw it, there are at least a dozen real turds that didn't pass anyone's "filter."
