I really don't want to start a flamewar here but the only difference between charity and government assistance is that government assistance comes under the threat of violence. The "begging" part is common to both. So yeah, he wants Veterans in need of assistance to receive it from those who offer it voluntarily, rather than from those who have no choice in the matter. And IMO there is more dignity to be had in receiving voluntary charity than taking it from people who wouldn't want to help me if they had a choice in the matter.

A little while back we had a thread about military health care and I was wondering what a person did or didn't get if they were in the military.

I feel if a person goes into the military and is hurt/injured in any way while they are in there we should at the very least offer them basic medical care for their wound/injury for as long as they need it. If that means the rest of their life, so be it. Even if they weren't hurt in combat and just fell off a curb or something, I still say they should get it. By joining the military they are saying that if called upon they will go into combat for us which makes it different than a lot of jobs.

However, If a person joins and serves 3-4 years then leaves and has no problems, never gets hurt and never was in combat then we should offer them some care until they get a job and can get their own, but probably not for life. I know they couldn't have gone to war at any time, but they didn't and they never got hurt in anyway doing their job. That said it is a job that is 24/7 and controls your life in most ways so we should reward them for that in some way. By giving them free health care until they get a job or can provide their own when they get out I think we are helping them and out and helping them make the transition into the regular world.

The idea of an injured vet having to lean on a charity to get help turns my stomach. I have seen a lot of charity organizations and know how hard up for money they are. A girl I dated worked for a group that provided shelters, counseling and assistance for battered women and they had to fund-raise non-stop just to make ends meet. When we start doing that with our vet's health care I think we will see a big reduction in those who are willing to go in and serve. At least now you know if you get hurt or disabled they will take care of you. If it becomes something where they just toss you on the mercy of others, it will become a whole different story.

I'm simply pointing out that there are people from the military that are scumbags and there are porn pushers who are good people. Actually, in the near 10 years I have been around this business I have only personally encountered a handful of real scumbags. I would actually say the number of dirtbags in mainstream businesses I have met is higher. To generalize about any group is actually pretty foolish be that group military people, stock brokers, porn pushers, grocery store clerks or any walk of life. Every group is made up of individuals. No, I was generalizing. From a general standpoint, a porn pusher has zero credibility in terms of calling anyone from the army, scum. Now if you want to get into specifics, that's a different story.

the problem with state health care in the uk (NHS) is that its so badly run.

it was set up to look after the sick. this worked well as many poor (and when we talk about poor in the uk, only 60 years or so ago - it was poverty - as in slums). the nhs saved many lives. it also improved health. in many ways the nhs improved the conomy as people were healthy and worked.

today the nhs is just run badly.

many doctords are overpaid.

people only get operated on (unless emegancies) 4 days a week. this is becase doctors/sergions only work in hospital mon to friday, so friday is a meeting day. so for 3 days a week you do not have non emergancy sergery.

also they have let people claim more and more on the nhs. these days you can get test tube babies on the nhs. this is not what the nhs was set up for.

also people miss-use the nhs. on a friday night the emergancy room is full of drunk yobs who have been in fights.

the problem in the uk is politicaloly no one wants to change the nhs as its considered a vote looser.

and also many firms take the mick. drug firms overcharge the nhs for drugs, and bizarly its legal for the drug firms to give doctors free holidays and other stuff (backhanders) to use there drugs.

in truth the nhs is in a mess. not becawse it is the nhs, just becase its badly run.

i think the nhs in the uk is the largest employing sector.

DVTimes xxx Industry Role: Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: UK Posts: 31,547	you better not tell him that if he was a marine, it was state run and state paid for. so on one hand he is proud to be a marine (state run), but not wanting health care to be state run. also best not to tell him that police, nasa and so on a not private run, but state run and paid for. in fact, if he wants to pay for health care, he would do well in china. its not free. the problem with state health care in the uk (NHS) is that its so badly run. it was set up to look after the sick. this worked well as many poor (and when we talk about poor in the uk, only 60 years or so ago - it was poverty - as in slums). the nhs saved many lives. it also improved health. in many ways the nhs improved the conomy as people were healthy and worked. today the nhs is just run badly. many doctords are overpaid. people only get operated on (unless emegancies) 4 days a week. this is becase doctors/sergions only work in hospital mon to friday, so friday is a meeting day. so for 3 days a week you do not have non emergancy sergery. also they have let people claim more and more on the nhs. these days you can get test tube babies on the nhs. this is not what the nhs was set up for. also people miss-use the nhs. on a friday night the emergancy room is full of drunk yobs who have been in fights. the problem in the uk is politicaloly no one wants to change the nhs as its considered a vote looser. and also many firms take the mick. drug firms overcharge the nhs for drugs, and bizarly its legal for the drug firms to give doctors free holidays and other stuff (backhanders) to use there drugs. in truth the nhs is in a mess. not becawse it is the nhs, just becase its badly run. i think the nhs in the uk is the largest employing sector. __________________ The Affiliate Program Last edited by DVTimes; 04-30-2010 at 05:47 AM..
