When in Vegas, will you visit the 'Pawn Stars' shop ?

http://www.history.com/shows/pawn-stars

I would be interested in seeing the shop. Specially the sections they dont show on tv, where the real money is being made.

YES, they certainly can be! They gloss over the pawn business, specially the gritty part of it. When people bring in jewellery and other valuables, where the real money is made.

Saw another pawn show last night, which was a lot more realistic and sleazy, specially the greasy main character. I think it's called American Pawn.

the stuff on those shows are pretty interesting, the fact that you watch them low ball these people because they know they are desperate and need cash to throw away to feed their obvious gambling problem is hard for me to stomach though...

When it boils down to it , its a business like any other. When you pay retail for something specially jewellery , you pay a huge markup. The reason I dont find the show realistic, is they overpay for a lot of shit, which is a loss leader, they make the money off camera, with people assuming they will get a deal when selling.

When my parents moved to LA they started a pawn shop in one of the suburbs near Long Beach. I got to visit them a few times and see how the business worked.

All transactions they did had to be recorded with the sellers ID, all the documents went to the police to check for stolen items. My Father reckoned a large % of what he was buying was stolen, but so long as he got the paperwork right he was legal.

If it was flagged as stolen by the police, who also gave him lists of stolen items, the police would seize the items.

He would also drive around from pawn shop to pawn shop buying up junk gold jewelery he would sell to a smelter in Downtown LA, in the jewelery district I believe. We also went to a police auction of unclaimed stolen items. Amazing some of the pieces of jewelery no one was claiming ownership of. Pieces picked up in a bust. Pieces that went in auction for 6 figures were common. As well as those that went for 2 figures.

When he dies my Mother went into partnership with a colleague selling jewelery and small objet d'art in the swap meets around Orange County and LA. The biggest one was in the parking lot of an aircraft builder near Long Beach and the one in the Rose Bowl stadium. Both held monthly.

Her and her partner drove around California and as far as Las Vegas to buy items from pawn shops, which they would sell most of the time to dealers who would sell them again. More specialised dealers, like a watch dealer or clock or antiques.

And that's how the pawn shop business works, the items seen in the pawn shop show aren't always sold by that pawn shop. When Rick says "No one walks in here asking for a convicts ball and chain" it's right. Which is why he sells it to a shop where people go to buy a convicts ball and chain.

And why he offers such low prices. He sells up to a dealer on the next rung adding 5-10%

In the days of the Internet the most amazing thing about that show is how clueless the people are about what they have. They could drive to a specialist shop and get a far better price.

My brother went a few weeks ago. He told me the name of the business is something different, and that when they do filming outside they change the sign.

I don't watch the show and could care less really. I have way better things to do with my free time.

Its Not, but what they are showing on tv, is not really what a pawn shop is all about, lender of last resort

Yes a lot of the items in LV pawn shops are from gamblers who had a winning day, visited the casino jewelry store and the next day had to pawn the itam and shocked at what they got.
JFK is spot on about the mark up. Pawned or sold jewelery was around 60-70% of the gold value, diamond was not reckoned unless it was big and flawless. Even then a fraction of the real value my parents got from a dealer.

Thats funny, yet you are perfectly fine feeding people with a sexual addition problem, who can't stop looking at porn and getting off, which some times destroys marriages, families and even some people lose their jobs when it becomes a problem at work.

rule of thumb, 10 cents on the dollar you paid retail, if that. For jewellery 1/2 melt or less, you dont pay for stones, or signature, ie signed Tiffany, it could be fake.

Dad would go round picking up the junk pieces for 75% of spot (the value of the gold) then drive up to LA and sell it for 90%. Sounds small until you realise the amount he was was dealing in. He would of been an easy target for a robber.

The pawn business is mostly about pawn shops selling to dealers who then sell to specialist shops. The swap meets opened at like 6.00 in the morning with a line of dealers eager to get round and pick up bargains.

With something really valuable, my Mother once bought an old toy metal train set in it's original box, from a garage sale for $20, she sold it immediately to a dealer in old toys for a lot more who probably sold it again.

There is a local pawn shop in Ontario that is also named Pawn Stars. Wonder how they get away with that. Or maybe they had the name first.

It is worth checking out. The place is pretty small, but they are expanding. The are making a fortune on selling the PawnStars cups, mugs, shot glasses, hat, shirts... the list goes on....

It is only a short cab ride from the show hotel.

Its called Gold & Silver Pawn. Went last year, saw the old man doing something, but beyond that it was a bunch of people, random employees, and big security guards. Was interesting too see, but too much jewelry, not enough cool shit imo.

Jewellery is where the money is, you double your money if you melt it and usually quadriple or more if you retail it and their retail is still under new prices

and ps Thanks for the name ;)

I've been to the pawn stars shop a couple of times... It's really not that interesting, it's basically a gift shop for fans of the show. If you actually wanted to do some business you have to call them and make an appointment.

BTW this is how they make a lot of their money: http://stores.ebay.com/Gold-and-Silver-Pawn-Shop

It's all about trademark and not uniqueness of name. As long as the US company does not have a registered trademark in Canada for that name, the Canadian is free to use it. I am not sure the US company could even register it as a trademark in Canada unless they were doing business in Canada.

So you will find some big companies like Toyota have trademarks all over the world for both their name and their logo and they qualify since they do business in the countries. But Jim's Place might be owned by a bar owner in London, and he may never register the name of his bar as a trademark and there could be a ton of people using the same name all over the world and it would be all perfectly legal.
