I decide to add a sata dvd drive to my computer because Im upgrading from winxp to win7 64 bit. I open it up, while Im in there blow out all the dust. Install the 8 gig of new ram I got also, put in the dvd burner and Im good to go. I turn my computer on it starts then stops then starts again not booting. So then I put back the old ram, unplug the dvd burner its still doing this. Any ideas where to look ? Thanks

it worked fine before i decided to do this. what i think im going to do is strip down to the motherboard and the c drive.then start adding things and see what works and doesnt.Im pissed I started fucking with it. When its late and Im tried.

In blowing out all the dust, is it possible that you broke the thermal paste seal between the processor and the heat sink, causing your machine to overheat?

you see something on the screen for a few seconds? does it reboot at random times or exactly same point? anything interesting on the screen when it reboots?

Yea, in other words, does it complete the Power On Self Test?

Also start by checking that everything is attached properly. If it is, and you get no POST beeps or it won't run. Remove everything and re-add until you find the faulty piece of equipment.

Tony,

Even if the job to add or remove some hardware inside of the machine is not very hard one has to be quite careful. If for example static electricity touches part of the motherboard or for example the RAM holder or so, that can cause it to not work due to being short circuited once.

Always make sure you are not wearing a pull over, a fleece jacket, wool socks or orther type of clothing that will charge you up with static eletricity. Then touch a radiator, possibly your bathroom tap or other fixed installation which will ground you. Do this just before touching anything inside the computer.

Only way to know if something is damaged, is to do exactly as suggested yourself, strip out everything but HDD and RAM and then start to see if it boots up. Are you able to get into BIOS? If so, set as many options as possible to "Auto detect" to make it find any and all new hardware.

What's it booting off? Did you swap any of the hdd cables around? Does it get past a system scan or kick out before it? Check your BIOS and make sure it's booting off a hdd and not your burner. Also make sure you listen for the motherboard beeps, you need two for a complete boot. If you get only one it could be that it's trying to boot off another drive, make sure you have the OS drive set as a master and not a slave. If you only had one hdd before it could very well be set as a slave since you don't need to master/slave drives with only one. Also make sure your PSU is big enough to handle what you put in or it won't boot either.
