Well, she tried out 3 times and she plays the cymbals in the band so she is someone
who wants to be active and do things.

That's more than I can say about a lot of kids these days.

I can't believe on this board you forgot the obvious.
What's the name of the guy with no arms, no legs, no head, and no torso?

True. They should have aborted her.

Can't really have much sympathy for her. It's like being blind and wanting to become a pilot - you just can't do it.

There are limitations in life and school is supposed to prepare you for that, not coddle and cocksuck, convincing you that you are the world's special little snowflake, not just mommy and daddy's.

I applaud her efforts, but Rochard's post about her limitations in her ability to do the actual activities required (not just her attempts at them) covers it.

The whole purpose of cheer leading is team and school spirit is it not? Her spirit isn't handicapped just her physical ability is. Where's the harm? Only good would come from something like this and you say it's a joke? What's the matter with you?

Oh and Hawking? Wasn't handicapped his whole life, he became that way later in life, which could happen to you or me some day. I would hope someone wouldn't tell you that you couldn't do something if such a thing were to happen.

I'm sure that she would be completely shocked finding out that she is limited in life. Wow. Such news!

I've seen male cheerleaders, fat cheerleaders, ugly cheerleaders, cheerleaders that can't jump, cheerleaders that can't dance, cheerleaders that don't even give a shit. Telling someone they can't cheer on the team and help out with cheerleader related events because they don't have a few limbs seems fairly shortsighted. If somebody wants to help out on the team, why would you say no? Find something for them to do.

Any lawsuit or huge ruckus is uncalled for, which is what this whole situation seems to be. But most of the attitude and judgments in this thread about people that are disabled is pretty shitty, and unfortunately it's how most people in the real world seem to look at the disabled.

I can't tell you how many times I've been told that I can't do something, shouldn't do something, or something would never happen for me... fortunately I'm a stubborn fuck and did most of them anyway. I get quite annoyed when I see a person telling others that they will never be able to do something because... they are a woman, they are black, they are short, they are fat, they are disabled, they are too young, they are too old... it's all bull shit and the product of a weak mind that can't see beyond the preconceived notions of society.

This girl has no legs, no arms, yet has more ambition and balls than most fully abled people do. She'll do just fine.

Yeah, there are fat cheerleaders. Being overweight is one thing, but they can still participate at all levels of cheerleading. While a heavier cheerleader will never be a flyer, they would make a great base. If you can't make the basic qualifications, you can't be on the team.

QFT.

I actually saw this thread a couple days ago, and thought about this issue. This is from someone who WAS a cheerleader.

Fact is, some teams are very competitive and depending on the school size, their advisor etc, it could be a team that requires the girls to be quite skilled in order to be able to be part of competition. And if that is the case many girls won't make the cut, or will be in the back, or won't get the good parts, etc. I was actually on a really competitive dance team for a couple years in high school. MANY girls didn't make it, it was lots of tears and drama. It wasn't exactly cheerleading but this is my point.

Now cheerleading. Of course they weren't going to use her for the base of the pyramid or to do cartwheels or other super athletic things (most girls can't do anyways), but they could have let her be part of the team and do other things. A big thing these girls do is cheer at games, they could AT LEAST let her do that! They just sit on the side of the field and cheer. If the girl wants to do it, and can take the idiot comments she'll no doubt get, more power to her! I don't know that they could put her in the middle of complicated physical routines, but it's kind of shitty imo. It isn't like it is a basketball team, or sports team. Cheerleading is about spirit and pep rallies, and I think it would have been ok.

Then again maybe, despite her disability, she's just a pain in the ass brat and they didn't think she would get along. I'd probably bet that is the case, given her reaction. LOL

/end useless opinion. lol

I am sure some of the other girls would love to just let her on to do her best. It would work and the fans would love it.

However, If and I am pretty sure this will be the case. The school has other kids that are disabled in some way, they all will then want to be part of the cheer squad or football or other and at some point this would have to be stopped.

Its something that can get out of hand by being the bigger person for one.

they should have accepted her.

at the end of the routine load her into a catapult and launch her into the cheering crowd.

it would have been huge.

I'm disabled and I played Varsity Soccer and 4 years on the Varsity Golf Team that went to state 3 years in a row. I had to adapt to the game and figure stuff out but once I did I could play golf better than most and be competitive. I was not put on the team because I was disabled(neck, shoulders and back all fused) I made the team because I could play as well as the able body players and not slow team play down. My condition has deteriorated quite a bit since then, that was almost 20 years ago when teams had to win or you ran laps. In soccer I ran just as many laps as anyone else on the team and played in the mud, rain, sleet.

I bet this is the case.

The real question is, do we make up a new position to fit someone that is incompetent, or do will fill current positions with competent people?

Accepting her on the team, would be a disservice - it would not teach her to pursue positions that she is competent at. It would give her misinformation about what she is competent at.

When she is dumped into the real world, and he mommy isn't there anymore, she needs a solid base of knowledge on what she can and can't do. She doesn't need a cloudy sense of self, and her head filled with ideas that she can drive a fork-lift or be a police officer simply because she asked for it.

She need to learn to be a doctor or scientist, not a social liability.

I am very hardcore: I think that the real failure is the fact that she wasn't euthanized when she was born. Like I said, hardcore.

Okay... maybe i'm a pervert but whatever. Listen when I see a cheerleader I want to fantasize a bit about looking under her skirt, her nice long and tanned legs and her cute tiny body being thrown all over the place. Seeing a wheelchair soaring through the air just doesn't cut it for me.

I was thinking more along the lines of a large ramp with a double loop, but catapult works too.

Why do you think she tried out in the first place...She will sue for discrimination and then schools will have to add places on their sports teams for handicap people. She will also get a few million, it's the way things work now days.

Common sense or life's not fair isn't good enough anymore. With that said, I'm sure the school could have come up with a better way to not discourage the girl and maybe give her a honorary position or something.
