Well, in days of old, Romany Gypsies seemed quite quaint. Travelling around the country in little lovely caravans. Now, however, they find some land and basically build a small town on it. And put static caravans so it looks like what I believe you call a trailer park.

They are usually involved in crime on some level and can often terrorise a neighbourhood.

Not only that. if you let them stay on public land like that it is a matter of time before every square inch of public land is taken over by them and the others they let know about the ability to stay and not be bothered.

the simple solution is find some land were they can move to.

it would be cheaper to buy a bit of land than spend millions on kicking them out.

they have said they would be happy to move.

everyone ones.

they sort of remind me of the families in the usa who live in the old ways. i forget there names. they were the same costumes as they did when they first arived in the usa. i think german background.

we had a family stay near me when i was about 14. they were nice. i used to give them water. it was hard to understand them as they had a strong accent.

one asked if i had a job and i said no. he said, thats mrs thatchers fault. i did not have the hart to tell him it was becase i was only 14 and still at school.

though when they went they did leave some rubbish in the field they were staying at. i felt let down as i was sticking up with them.

but there was no crime.

to be honerst i do wonder what they need planning permishion for.

they are not real houses (unless i am wrong) but static caravans.

i am not sure you need planning permishion for static caravans.

i belive tempory buildings are excempt. its why you can put a hut up in your garden.

paul, i think you look at them with envy. those static caravans are stunning next to the hut you live in.

on a side note. there is an irony in the fact that somone will make good money from the scrap metell thats left.

they do work hard

these days they get money from scrap metal. but they (or did) work on farms and building sites and such. moving about.

i suspect in the usa you have new age travellers (hippies), rather than traditional families.

we have some who are new age too.

but these are hystoric families. you get them all over europe.

i belive hitler exterminated some during ww2.

the problem is some are criminals and they let the rest down. and traditionaly they cover up the criminals.

on one side they seem brain washed, but on the other one could argue they are much happier. families stronger. divorse non exsistant.

its hard to condem them when our lives are not perfect.

part of me likes there life.

Most of the travellers in the UK are irish travellers & not gypsies. The main reason that they create a problem for most communities is the dirty way they live, very little washing & no respect. Of course this is not all of them.. this would be stereotyping. However the young kids are rogues & most do steal & take what they want being bought up with no laws. In many counties around the UK, the councils have set up proper sites with washing facilities, toilets & electric similar to caravan sites. Meant specifically for travellers. They will be moved on but with lots of commotion first.

There is a big deal when lots of the travellers create such problems for oaps & other youth in the community, however, you find rogues in council areas anyway

uk planning laws are very stict.

a few years ago a 'yank' put a shark on his house (i think he was an artist) and it was like ww3.

They were offered homes and turned them down.

Seems they don't think the law applies to them. I wonder if they didn't want to move into Council homes has anything to do with paying rent, rates and having to be part of the system like everyone else. Like paying income taxes?

Just a thought because living in house beats living in a caravan with no proper running water and sanitation. At the moment their waste isn't going into the sewers, they just have a gutter laying on the ground that stream it elsewhere.

He showed the camera crew a fence the squatters erected on his land. Also pointed out the effluent that was coming from the squatters camp.

He lit a piece of paper and pinned it to the fence, called the police to complain and the police arrested him.

They should also interview the residents.

Basildon Borough Council has ridden roughshod over every single opposing argument in its determination to evict the residents of Dale Farm.

It has shrugged off the estimated £17.5 million cost of throwing hundreds of people out of their homes and ignored the still greater social and financial price of making an entire community homeless.

It has ignored every dissenting voice - from local residents to solidarity activists to Jewish communities who see chilling parallels with their own historic treatment.

And if the prospect of breaking international law doesn't stop Basildon council, that leaves only one course of action.

The Dale Farm community needs the support of every single person who can lend their strength to the fight.

Today supporters petition Downing Street. On Saturday the Solidarity Long Weekend will muster forces for a permanent camp to stop the evictions.

And in future it may take non-violent resistance to keep the bailiffs out of Dale Farm.

The travellers can still keep their homes with the help of the one weapon Basildon council can't ignore - people power.
