What does "free" mean? The only thing that really changes is peoples perceptions. Not the facts on the ground. America has marketed itself as "home of the free" and similar rhetoric for centuries with the same success as Obama had marketing himself as "Hope and Change" - a vague, ambiguous message that means something different to everyone.

I know, and there are almost no free countries in the world, because there is always someone that will use that as weakness so every country that want to remain alive is doing exactly what US or any other are doing. My good friend friend from paris told me about his uncle that is working in police there how they managed to stop demonstrations several years back. Just by going during night door by door, beating, and threatening to those who supported or organized that mess. Believe it or not, they called for Serbian security for advice how to do it.

And regarding situation here, as long as my friend is called to police to be threatened and scared for posting on his site against west and globalization, you are in right. No real freedom of speech for all those who are not thinking same as government (USA, NATO)

I don't see much change in the US. I travel constantly around the country on business and have never had or observed any issues that made me think we were a police state. If I drive to fast and I get caught,that is my fault. I know the laws, I gambled and I lost(that time).

I don't support everything OWS is 'doing' or what they want but really what is the average citizen to do when he sees his way of life slipping away? Sure, I'm doing fine, you're doing fine but what about everyone else? Should it be every man for himself or should we be working to fix the wrongs of the past 50 years? I never said anything about electing a Republican president. I think Obama is a better choice than the potential candidates. I also think that while the system is broken, the message on this forum has been pretty radical because insecure idiots desperately want people to think of them as unique and enlightened. i don't think the US is a police state and it's still far from McCarthy times - but i have never been treated worse coming to any country compared to trying to enter the US through immigration as a tourist. it's almost like they are trying to scare everyone away - and it works well.

Peoples rights are being removed daily in the UK from employment rights to education rights. The only way to enforce these is through heavy police presence.

I am not sure about the rights of Americans but for the government to be able to get away with what they are doing to the people via the enslavement of debt a heavy police presence is needed.

So in a way yeah America is becoming a police state.

it is always stupid to talk about places (countries) without being there (what most of people here do all the time), so I will just tell what other people told me. I have three friends that finished studying in US (ok guys completely, one is bank manager, other working in international company...) and what all of them separated told me is that there is incredible feeling of repression in US (they were called to talks about some completely naive statements, police going behind you without reason for miles, you must talk to police propely and completely obey them..)..as, I've told, that is what other people told me. here it is one interesting video :

There is definitely a lot of hypocrisy, no doubt about it. Most of the people protesting don't have a clue but thats pretty typical of any movement. Only a few make any real impact while the rest are just "there". I think OWS is just a clusterfuck of unhappy people and people who want to make a scene with no clear goals but people have a right to be pissed. I don't have any real solutions but I fear for the future of american politics, its corruption and being in bed with big business.
