kinda reminds me of the old 'beta cam' look from the 70's soap operas... not crappy like that but deff not a film look... seems like way more dimension. even with a small DOF the stuff close to the lens seems to almost, not sure how to say it.... it's not 3d but it doesn't seem like 2d either tho I know it is...

It looks good but even new movies have an early 80's TV feel to them. For some reason Doctor Who comes to mind. |

There is an actual term for that. Its called the "soap opera effect"
Took me a few days to get used to it. I have a pair of 55" Samsung Series 8 LED-LCD with 240Hz refresh. |

i am going to be getting one of these soon. finally decided to get rid of the trusty old tube tv when i move. is a higher refresh rate better? what are some things to look out for? will i have to sit directly in front of it to watch it properly?

3 years ago most probably had a refresh rate of 60hz, now the low ends are 120hz, high end are 240hz and some of the plasmas have 600hz.

70" in the living room and a 42 in the bedroom. Staying at Ceasars, TV looked small

lower the refresh rate, its too high for normal digital cable/sat. The only thing that would get the benefit from over 120hz is blu ray or a video game.

You can turn it off. It's called True-Motion on Samsung and other makers have different names. Go into the settings and turn it off if you don't like it.
If you play games online, you need to turn all processing off because it causes too much input lag.

I agree, only time I ever watch in higher than 60 Hz is Discovery/history type channels, or Sports or BluRay. I find that above that, it Ruins the movies, and makes them look like every show on the CBC or BBC. Like its shot without filters and you are watching the raw footage.

Costco just started carrying an 80inch tv. Not sure LED or what. Looks pretty good but you need a small movie theater to sit in.

The first thing I watched in that 240 mode was Lord of the Rings on cable, and it looked like Gandalf was in my living room. I was tripping out on it. Is that what you're talking about?

You are seeing a 120hz or higher screen refresh rate. Each TV brand has a different name for this such as "pure motion" or some such thing but its the refresh rate you are noticing. It makes things look very very sharp - too sharp for alot of people - and it is sometimes described as the "soap opera effect". The high refresh rate is necessary for 3D but distracting for 2D. For this reason you can adjust the refresh rate of your TV in one of your menus somewhere. Look around then experiment for the rate you like the best.

Don't bother. Projectors such. They aren't as bright, have lousy black levels, have noisy fans, require mounting and special cabling, need very careful placement, and require super bright light bulbs that burn out. It's an expensive and impractical way to get a shitty picture. Flat screen TV's kick ass.

I purchased a 42 inch one about 3 months ago and tbh I prefered our old flat screen Sony Trinitron TV. The pic on the old TV looked much better. The only thing i like about the LCD is its weight, nice and easy to carry if you move lol

I bought a 40" Samsung Smart LED TV the other day. It's very practical, it has a built in satellite tuner and you connect a hard drive to it for recording TV shows, you can stick USB sticks in the back and watch video clips like that. What I don't like are the colors and posterizing but this may be due to the heavy compression on satellite broadcasts, but when they broadcast older movies (60s, 70s) I usually do like the colors.

I just picked up a brand new 46" Samsung LED and its amazing.....
Only 2 cm thick, uses 70 watts full out, and the sound is pretty decent too considering the older versions of thin TVs. |

Yes, the 'soap opera effect' is a problem LCDs with motion interpolation ("perfect motion", "motion enhancement" etc) suffer from. Playing 24fps video on a 120hz screen means that every frame will be shown 5 times. When using motion interpolation, your LCD TV shows every frame once but generates the other 'intermediary' frames. So basically when playing video at 24fps on a 120hz screen with motion interpolation 4 out of 5 frames are not original frames but something your TV's processor generated.

Note: Before you buy a new TV, check the audio output jacks. Many new TVs don't come with RCA audio L/R outputs, they have Digital Audio connections, Coax on left, Toslink Optical on the right. Digital Coax uses asingle orange color coded "RCA" connection. These support "AC3" Dolby Digital (5.1, etc.), DTS, S/PDIF.
![]() The better TV's have more options, know what you want and check the back of the TV out. http://www.ramelectronics.net/howto-av.ep
