If you had a house fire, which of your possessions could you not replace ??

Would it be photos, old music collections, some family jewellery, or anything else ??

After losing a shitload of stuff recently because we got flooded out of our house (and still living in temporary accommodation as a result) and we've been working at trying to get things sorted through insurance, it's made me think of the things i simply can't replace.

Luckily, we aren't in that position though by the looks of things. And we will eventually get everything back to normal. But it must suck for people when they really do lose the things that are important to them for good...

Sorry to hear that happened to you, fucking sucks! Hope you will be able to go home soon.

I think for me it'd be old pictures, a few books that'd be hard to come by, paintings that sort of stuff.

I'm not a sentimental person. I'd walk out of my house with the clothes on my back (provided it didn't hurt me financially).

Same. Everything in my place is stuff. Things I care about, are in my head. Money is accessible by my credit card.

I have lost everything before, twice. Once due to house fire, once to a very complex disaster. I have realized that one can lose everything and still be ok. At least I can.

I would loose nothing at all.

All of my photos and videos are now stored online. In fact, over the past few months I dug up some of the older videos and put them on line. My entire music collection is also online now too.

Everything I need for work is online too. I use google docs a lot, passwords aren't an issue, and all of my software is also uploaded online too. This is intentional - So in the event I loose my entire computer, I can quickly be up and running on new computer in minutes.

What else do I have? Furniture? Clothes?

Everything is replaceable.

There's nothing in my house (In Canada) that I would honestly cry over if I lost it. All my computes/laptops are synced up and everything is stored off location. Photos etc are all digital and safe thanks to Facebook/servers.

I'd miss a lot of things but I'm sure I'd replace them with the same or better things. My house in Scotland has a bit more shit in there that I might miss but since I haven't lived there for going on 5 years now, I couldn't tell you the last time I actually saw this stuff I might miss.

With the invention of the internet and cloud storage... there is no logical reason to lose things such as photo albums and the like...

As for me, there isn't a single item that I own that couldn't be replaced tomorrow...

I have a fireproof lockbox that I keep a few things in, certain original documents, etc. But even that stuff is replaceable.

Sorry to hear about your predicament McD. Good thing you had insurance.

Scott, sorry to hear of your flood loss dude.

We got slightly flooded awhile back - but no major damage other than having to replace the basement floor.

As to your question - just our pets (cats). All else is replaceable. Given enough time, I'd likely grab external HDs and a few photo albums...but those would be secondary considerations.

A few months back I would have said nothing, but in the in the last couple months my mom brought a lot of very old family photos to my place for safe storage so I would have to say that now I would have to take all of this in a case like this. These can't be replaced.

Should take the time to scan them, or invest in a scanning service

nothing like getting a call from your neighbor at 4pm in the afternoon saying uhh.. your house is on fire..

On the bright side we have USAA for insurance they were wonderful to deal with and had the regional large claims boss come out at 11pm and meet with me and go over the procedure and everything. For the most part everything we claimed they had zero questions, didn't have to prove anything/ownership.. They "claimed" that they can get a pretty good understanding of a live style and what people had by the cars they drive, what they do for a living and what stuff they can find left over in the house. Not like we were trying to claim a 90k painting that burned or anything.

Its just amazing at the amount of crap you go through when this happens. Dealing with the insurance, dealing with the vultures.. er i mean public adjusters who try to squeeze every penny out of insurance companies for a %

Now we have a custom house and its damn near perfect.. and the wife wants to move because of the memories she has here.

If my house burned while I was away, I'd be more upset about my parrot dying in a fire than I would be about losing the house.

If I were home and my house were burning, I'd grab my bird and truck keys... and laptop if I could. Everything else is in fire-rated vault, or insured.

I had a fire a week before X-Mass thank goodness not much was lost. I was on the phone with 911 as TF was getting all the computer and such into my car. I ran up and got my jewelry box, other than that I didn't care much about anything.

We were homeless for a week but ended up in a better house so it worked out for the best. I think I was more upset that people here found it very funny and made fun of us being homeless. Kinda sad huh?

Yup our loss adjuster that the insurance company sent out was an asshole. He didn't assist us at all. He only wanted to make sure everything was at an absolute minimum. So we have argued for weeks now trying to get things in the house fixed, and getting all our items replaced aswell. It shouldn't be as hard as this when clearly the flood wasn't our fault. The water company has admitted they are responsible. So why we need to fight for everything we are due is beyond us...

should be a no brainer then, you should file a claim with their insurance. If you file with yours they are just going to go back to the party at fault and file a claim that way.

We are claiming against their insurance, but we've to do it through our own first, amd fhen they will try claim it all back. Which is why we are pissed off with the way things are being handled.

We also have a lawyer putting things together for an overall compensation claim against the water company...

Finally, what makes my rifle so valuable? It came with a maintenance logbook numbered to the rifle. Not only has that rifle been in combat, but in the back of the book there is a section titled (translates to) "broken sticks". Many logged broken sticks.
An older Finnish friend said, a 'good boy' was one who gave, his mom, the weapon from the dead German he found in the forest
