Question about the GOP and American Politics
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but:
Can Mitt Romney "Steal" the republican nomination away from Donald Trurmp? Mitt Romney's anti-Trump strategy may well double as a Romney nomination strategy - Vox

Of course he can, the GOP party is going to pass convention rules in May or June. The rules aren't going to be fair to Trump

In theory they can select anyone they want. There is a huge risk in that. If Trump heads into the convention with enough delegates to win the nomination and they end up giving the nomination to someone else they risk alienating a huge section of voters who voted for Trump.
There is a lot of talk about this happening, but I would think, as desperate as the republicans are to have anyone but Trump, they have to know stealing it from him and giving it to someone else would hand the election to Hillary. |

As much as I'm on the record as disliking Trump, it would be a suicide of the GOP to do that if Trump had the support to be the nominee. Sure the GOP & the Democrat party can nominate whoever they want, but the general guidelines are that they pick the guy who has won the various states and holds the most support from the people in the party.
If the GOP did that, they would tear apart their party and you can bet Trump would then run as an Independent crushing any chance at all of a Republican win. What something like this will come down to, is would they rather have Hillary as the president or Trump. If they try to steal the nomination away from Trump if he still hold the majority support, then it would certainly give Hillary the win. Nothing would surprise me at this point though because the Democrat party has pretty much screwed Sanders out of any chance of the nomination by opening working hand and hand with Hillary. |

Theoretically, it can happen. In reality, it wouldn't. Like Crockett mentioned (it irks me to agree with him), Trump would then run as an Independent and splinter the GOP vote. It would not only guarantee a Democrat win, but it would destroy the GOP as we know it. In laymen's terms, it would be like the GOP telling their constituents that voted for Trump in the primaries that their opinion doesn't amount to shit, and their opinions are the only ones that matter.
Not only that, Romney couldn't beat George Zimmerman in a Presidential election. He's the epitome of what most people think the GOP is; rich elitist white dudes. When he won the primaries last election, I knew Obama had another 4 years. |

Can the GOP really say "Trump won, but we have decided to go with someone else". More importantly, have they ever done that before in the past? At this point, I do not see how the Republican party is going to reclaim the White House. If Trump gets the nomination, the polls all say he will loose to Hillary (by eight points, although obviously a lot can change before November). If the GOP does not give Trump the nomination, it would split the party with a large enough percentage voting for Trump no matter what ensuring the Republicans do not win the White House.

I do remember one thing about the election that struck me as odd. At one point Ryan walked into some kind of soup kitchen with his wife and just started washing dishes, trying to make it look he was donating his time for the homeless or whatever. Paul Ryan is human, just like the rest of us, and was trying to make it look like he was doing something good and went out about it the wrong way. We all put our pants on the same way, one leg at a time.

I truly do not see the GOP stopping the insane behavior. Just like they don't care the American people want BO to nom a SC judge but they fully plan to obstruct that still. They are completely disunited and truly do not care about the American people. They'll continue to destroy themselves. DNC isn't better, just more united, Hillary isn't right for America.

In the past there have been brokered conventions where one candidate agrees to give their delegates to another candidate, but that normally would happen if you had a situation where there were two or more candidates left and none of them had reached the magic delegate number. I believe there are other things they could do including voting to change the rules on how the nomination process takes place. Personally, I think they are just putting these threats out there to try to scare the republican voters into not voting for Trump. I think they hope they are making people think, "I'd vote Trump, but they won't let him have the nomination so I won't bother." |
