European evacuations vs Us evacuations

Just tuned into cnn , all traffic is stuck on some interstate because everyone is going OUT of the city

they give you images of a big wide interstate , one way all cramped up everyone standing still

the other way totally EMPTY , no cars going in that direction for the obvious reasons

Europe : we open that for people going OUT and keep on lane reserved for people who for what reason have to go IN

Us : complain about the roads and how come no one from FEMA is doing something

fucking IDIOTS

or is it a southern thing ?

Sad... but there is a lot of blame to go around.

If you were to tell me that a hurricane MIGHT hit Vancouver in a week, my skinny ass would have visited the BANK, HOME DEPOT (for lumber, tools, jerry cans), the GAS STATION (with 10 jerry cans full of emergency gas), the SUPERMARKET (water, non-perishable food), and the PHARMACY (prescriptions, anti-biotics, general goods) within 6 hours.

What I don't get is how can some people wait until THE DAY BEFORE the god damn emergency?

My lazy ass would've boarded up the house, shut off the water and gas, given all the food away to my neighbors, loaded a few UHAUL trucks with my family and friends and driven it to a storage depot somewhere far away. Then either rent a house or fly to Europe for a 2 week vacation.

Wow you must be rich and have a lot of time on your hands, because if you lived in a place like NO you'd be doing that 3-4 times a year at least.

Wait... are you saying you'd leave your friends and familly in a storage depot while you go to Europe?

Good point.

If I lived in NO, I would pool my friends and family together so we could SPLIT THE COSTS.

If I was poor, I would NOT go on vacation but would just rent a house in a safe location with my family and friends. I am 100% sure that if 10-15 family members and friends pooled their money together, they could afford a house and supplies easily.

Being poor does not mean being stupid

2000 poor people couldn't pool their money together to rent a house 4 times a year just in case. These are people living check to check, I guess you have no concept of what that means. The last storm hit at the end of the month, that means thousands of people had NO MONEY. I don't mean a few bucks laying around and room on the credit cards, I mean NO MONEY.

My main point was that, whoever you are, you're not going to go through all the overkill shit you mentioned 4 times a year every year. That's how often people who live in places like this get hurricane warnings, they happen ever year. And if you don't have a dollar to your name, you're fucked no matter how smart you are.

If ye was poor like a lot of people, even with your 10-15 family members pooling money you would still only have enough to maybe get 2 hotel rooms for a night or two.
People seem to miss that most people have zero savings at all and literally live paycheck to paycheck with most of it going to debt.

In reality it could take alot longer than 6 hours to do errands by the time you know youre in a redzone. Bank would take you an hour (if open at all). Home Depot about 2.5. Gas station about 2 (once you find one with gas and wait in line in the street), supermarket, 2.5 easy and the pharmacy about an hour. (Mostly Lines and finding alternatives when there are shortages. Last year at the Grocery store all the lines went to the back of the store and turned, over 80 people in EACH line.

We learned to consolidate our trips. Pharmacies often have small food marts in them, you pickup whatever you can find as soon as you see it, mostly water and ice. HomeDepot is a must but they also sell water and other essentials. Gas stations have ATMs so that's the first stop. Use your credit card or debit card to reserve cash. The trick is to get what you can as fast as you can yes, but it's a crazy scramble and if you wait to get water till you get to the grocery store you are sadly out of luck. Last year we even raided vending machines for bottled water, there was NONE to be found ANYWHERE over a day before the storm hit. Home Depot got a delivery 2 days before the storm and was out of water as well, 5 pallets in 3 hours sold.

I hear ya tho, you can see it coming but you never know if it will affect you and how much. Since June whenever I go to the store I always buy a few extras (water, canned goods) and I keep a "hurricane" kit in a large plastic bin where we keep everything from batteries, flashlights, candles, sterno cans, glowsticks, ducttape, first aid, etc to keep the items we need to "scramble" for last minute to a minimum. This is what has been drilled into every Floridian all year long since I can remember. There are only 3 major N/S interstates to get out of south Florida, I coudn't imagine trying to EVAC 8 million people through the bottle neck that is our state.

I sure wish all those people luck. No matter how prepared you are, anything can happen.

Didn't realize that there were THAT MANY poor people in the South. Guess both After Shock Media and you are right.

In that case, I would just pack the essentials and take my family to a shelter outside of the danger zone as quickly as possible.

My family has been preparing for "the big one" for over 10 years now. Every year we buy new water, batteries, non-perishable goods, etc... so we're good to go.

We're earthquake ready and can leave the city with 15 minutes notice. Besides gas (keeping 10 jerry cans in your garage is not insurance friendly), we are good to go.

European genius, please save everyone with your brilliant disaster scenario planning.

You should send out your resume so someone will hire you for disaster planning, but since it lists "masturbates all day in mother's basement until penis is raw" as your only job/skill they might not hire you.
