Three Out Of Four Adults Support Crackdown On Illegal Obscenity

MORE THAN THREE OUT OF FOUR ADULTS SUPPORT THE U.S. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT?S CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL OBSCENITY
NEW YORK (November 15, 2005) ? More than three out of four (77%) adult Americans support the Justice Department?s effort to enforce federal obscenity laws, according to results of a survey conducted by Harris Interactive for Morality in Media November 4 to 7. Fewer than one in five (19%) of U.S. adults oppose new enforcement efforts. The question asked and overall breakdown of responses are as follows:

?The Supreme Court has held that obscene material is not protected by the First Amendment and that obscenity laws can be enforced against commercial distributors of hardcore pornography. During the past decade, hardcore pornographic videotapes and DVDs, films on pay TV channels, and Internet websites have proliferated. Soon, cell phones that combine voice with pictures will make it even easier to access hardcore pornography. Recently, the Justice Department established a task force to prosecute obscenity crimes, and the FBI recruited additional agents to investigate these crimes. Do you support or oppose this new effort to enforce federal obscenity laws??
77% Total Support
19% Total Oppose

62% Strongly support
14% Somewhat support
8% Somewhat oppose
11% Strongly Oppose
4% Not sure/No opinion
--% Refused (volunteered)

The results come from Harris Interactive?s National QuorumTM, a bi-weekly omnibus survey conducted among adults living in the contiguous United States. The survey was conducted among 1,005 adults 18 years of age or older and is representative of the U.S. population. The survey has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points at the 95% confidence level.

There was strong support across all demographic groups examined for increase enforcement, with at least 59% in each of the 102 groups examined.

Robert W. Peters, President of Morality in Media, commented:

?Those who defend hardcore pornography, whether in court or in the court of public opinion, point to the proliferation of this vile material as ?proof? either that everyone is viewing it or that people no longer deem hardcore pornography unacceptable. The porn defenders overlook at least three factors.

?First, much if not most hardcore pornography is consumed by a relatively small percentage of males who are addicted to it. Second, just because a person experiments with hardcore pornography does not mean he or she has become a devotee of it, especially when pornographers promote their products relentlessly and by deceptive means. Third, just because a person views some hardcore pornography does not mean he or she finds all of it acceptable or thinks more of it would be a good thing.

?Defenders of hardcore pornography also say the Justice Department efforts to curb the sale of obscene materials is a waste of resources. They overlook the reality that the floodtide of hardcore pornography pouring into our communities and homes is adversely impacting society in various ways, including:

Contributing to teen promiscuity
Contributing to the breakup of marriages
Contributing to sex crimes against adults and children
Contributing to on-the-job sexual harassment
Contributing to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS
Contributing to the coffers of organized crime
Contributing to a tarnished ?anything immoral goes? national image.
?They also overlook the fact that when obscenity laws are effectively enforced, the resulting fines and forfeitures will offset most if not all of the cost of enforcement.?

Headquartered in New York City, MORALITY IN MEDIA works through constitutional means to curb traffic in illegal obscenity. MIM operates the www.obscenitycrimes.org website, where citizens can report possible violations of federal Internet obscenity laws, and the National Obscenity Law Center, a resource for prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and legislators.

So the Justice Department, FBI and Supreme court never have fantasies that others from religious right would deem obscene. And "obscenity" leads to crime. Right. Orwellian. It leads to babies, and keeps people married for many years.

The funny thing about these surveys, is that the people that are answering the question dont want to be thought of as sitting in a room with thier dick in their hand.

I think it's obvious that these questions were loaded, with a very clear indicator as to what the survery-makers wanted the answers to be. The way Morality In Media perverts their data to meet their closed-minded assumptions is even more distasteful than the pic of *******! Fuck 'em!

First of all ... SIMPLE STATS PEOPLE!! Only 1000 people were polled and it doesn't say what part of the country they were polled. Get a good sample number please.

Ask anyone if they support "obsenity" and they will probably say no. Not many want to see simulated rape, animal sex, etc. Now ask those same 1000 people if they want to see porn, you'll get different answers. There is a lot of gray area with this and the gov't is going to try to lump porn into obsenity.

XXXJay... I think all obscenity is illegal. (your subject line is that 3 out of 4 adults support a crack down on illegal obscenity.)

I sure am glad people are taking a strong stance against something. While we're at it. I'm against rape, terrorism and animal mutalation.

Great point.

Also polls are often created to achieve a desired response. Few if any are scientific. They often serve no purpose but to serve an agenda.

To me, paying more than $1.50 for premium fuel is obscene. So given that I say that it's obscene do I have a case?

According to Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry: ob·scene
Pronunciation: äb-'sEn, &b-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle French, from Latin obscenus, obscaenus
1 : disgusting to the senses : REPULSIVE
2 a : abhorrent to morality or virtue; specifically : designed to incite to lust or depravity b : containing or being language regarded as taboo in polite usage <obscene lyrics> c : repulsive by reason of crass disregard of moral or ethical principles <an obscene misuse of power> d : so excessive as to be offensive <obscene wealth> <obscene waste>
synonym see COARSE
- ob·scene·ly adverb

No where in there does obscenity say anything about sex or sexuality.

Here in our local town (pop. 30k) - we have a quasi-religious group known as the Women's Auxiliary...and quite often they set up a petition booth outside a major grocery store to solicit signups from people "against child porn".

That's all fine and dandy. But when you read through the literature they dispense, you quickly realize they've lumped ALL pornography in with child porn.

So they take these huge petitions to the federal government claiming they represent this great multitude of people who want to see pornography of all kinds made illegal.

Its an intentional misrepresentation on their part. They know they'd get very few petition signers if it was only against pornography. So they promote and exploit it from the child porn angle and dramatically increase their signups.

I've stopped at their booth a few times in recent years...and had more than one confrontation with several of them. Most people who stop to sign don't bother reading the literature before putting pen to paper. They see the big sign "FIGHT CHILD PORNOGRAPHY" and rush to do what they consider to be the right thing.

From what I understand, this happens in a LOT of communities these days. They can't win their war against the adult entertainment industry, so they're forced to skew and falsify their campaigns against us.

This was a push poll pure and simple.
They made the case for an obscenity crackdown before they asked if people supported it. The results of this poll are not a reflection of the average american's view of explicit material and whether or not it should be allowed.

Also someone tell the Morality in Media guy that the porn industry takes in more money annually than the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball COMBINED. ($10 billion)

If it's only being watched by a few addicts, they must be incredibly wealthy addicts

And I'll bet that 99 out of 100 of those polled have surfed for it, probably daily!

I've said it once and I'll say it again, we are reverting back to the 1950's.

Conservative presidency = crackdown on everything porn-related.

Why can't the country be run by someone who was NOT born in the fucking 40's or 50's? No offense, but, we need a more progressive president who wasn't raised that jerking off to "naked women" would make you go blind and send you to hell. At least Pres. Clinton may have been an old fucker, but he was also progressive.

If they have to be over 50 every time, please can they not be religious hypocrites who see things the way their parents taught them 30 plus fucking years ago.

Damn, with that loaded question I'd have probably said I supported a crackdown too. I wonder what the response would have been to a fair question like:

"With our borders unsecured, and terrorism rising around the world would you support taking FBI agents off their job to investigate pornography staring consenting adults?"

You can bitch about it or whatever, but the fact is that if that many people are againest it, porn has something to really worry about. Don't worry about it, and go on as always, and you likely will have a rude awakening one of these days. Its people with the anything goes attitude that are going to bury this industry. They are fucking idiots!
