Video shooters I got a question

I upped the wattage of my light shooting to about 1750 watts of light. I like the look but Im worried about shooting in hotel rooms I dont want to trip the breaker. Do you know if hotel rooms are 20amps or 15? I had read that bathrooms in a hotel are on their own breaker do you know if this is true? Thanks

Very good question, I don't shoot in hotels but I would think the bathroom would be the best bet because they know people plug in hair dryers etc.

Gfi

Almost all modern bathrooms have a GFI (Ground Fault Interupter) that's designed to keep people from dying if they drop the hair dryer in the sink or the bathtub. It's essentially a breaker right at the socket, but it may or may not be on it's own circuit.

Sorry, don't know the amperage information though.

your not going to trip anything.... you should see the setup I use at hotels here in vegas...

I run over 6000 wats of lighting.....

watts and amps are tottally different you can take a hit from 6000 watts and nothing will happen but it only takes 1 amp across your heart to kill you...

ohms law baby...

before porn I was a sparky

gfci are only in bathrooms to stop electrocutions and fires... they still carry the same rating and normal recipticles only rather than the breaker tripping the gfci will trip....

the thing to do is get power strips then you trip the power strip in the unlikley event... but I am willing to bet you will not trip anything...

to pull that many amps you need resistance something like heaters.. microwaves... lighting is lighting not that much resistance... how many amps does your lights pull maybe 7 amps tops? also remember that hotels are all 3phase which means in your room you will have a b c leg of power.... so plug in one plug that phase a another plug phase b and so forth... I mean really I load the fuck outta shit you should see my office LOL... at hotels I run 5 kinoflo 4 bay lights.. 2 diva's plus novatron strobes and computers all off 2 power strips ive only triped once... and it was my fault.. I was showing a trick to someone where you take live wire put it in bowl of water then stick your hand in there.. I triped the strip not the breaker and if you trip the breaker call hotel they will reset it...

The bigger problems with shooting in hotel rooms isn't the power, but the fact that you have some ugly, smallish hotel room as your set. You'll probably be okay with the power in any modern hotel, especially if you disperse the plugs around the room(s). I'd recommend bringing your own quilt with some nice bright color, some flowers or something else to add some color in the background and perhaps pull the bed away from the wall and find a way to throw a backlight on the bed, so the lighting doesn't look completely flat.

its all the same... im willing to bet the gfci is connected to at least 2 plugs in the room itself... I know when we built the belagio thats how we did it.... only reason gfci is in bathroom is it's code... same with kitchen and garage.... ever have a light go out in your house then find the gfci in the garage tripped? happends here in the rain it's just a saftey feature your I always overload shit with electrical

for some reason electric does not bother me.. ill work 480 live all day long on ac units at the disconnect.. but I am scared to death of propane and gas.. I won't even light the pilot on my fireplace LOLOL

but electrical is not that scary to me for some reason....

reminds me we were doing a repair job on top of the mirage here... I was working with an apprentace I told him always put one hand in your pocket when working live he did not listen and crossed phases with the ratchet and within 2 secs he chattered all his teeth out I had to double kick him off....

The reason I asked is because I had read this "Also realize that 2000w is about all you are going to get from any single household 120v outlet; household breakers are usually either 15 or 20 amps (remember the "West Virginia Law" W = VA. So with a 120volt system you would have 15 x 120 = 1800watts on a 15 amp breaker or 20 x 120 = 2400 watts on a 20 amp breaker. It's a bad idea to push this to the limit also."

So thats why I asked.
