Currently, Google has a "Looking for local results for (generic term)?" zip code field. They also have an automatic local results search using IP matching: http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/20...c-search-terms

This makes localized content even more relevant. Common localization techniques involve building subpages for all the suburbs/districts of your target area. Common content tactic for real estate, location-specific services, etc.

Good topic Gene- this trend is here to stay imo. it is also driving some growth in CityName+Keyword.com sales fortunately.

CityName+Keyword is looking to be very potentially lucrative. Probably lots of low hanging fruit right now in that space. Maybe with the end of domain tasting, much of the domain money will pour into this space.

While I think it's a great OPTION.. I'd like for it to remain wholly optional. I dont want them to EXCLUDE a great hobby store (for instance) just because it's in California and I'm in NY. Sure I'd be happy to be shown the NY ones, but there's some great ones out there in California too.

In short I dont want it to be used to exclude anything based on whatever criteria some third party decides.

Will they start showing only merchants who've agreed to collect state sales tax? How about if a state law prohibits the sale of vibrators and they decide to comply by not showing sex toy ads to known state residents? Etc etc.

I dont think these things would happen, but it's possible to do now, isn't it.
