When I crate trained I fed my pup in the crate with the door open. She started to get used to it really fast. Then when ever it was time to go in there she would run right in and lie down. It worked really well.

They love having their own space. Some people think it's cruel, but it gives the dog a safe spot in the house, really. Put a nice blanket or towel in there to make it comfy.

you mean Kennel? I built my dogs little houses and they love em, cept the bigger one, he likes stretching out and laying on his back in the middle of floor, but my smallest dog loves burrowing under blankets in her little den, she is only 7 pounds (very small female mini pin)

my dogs are trained to listen though and will go into kennel if i tell them to. they each have a kennel and both simply need me to point to it and will go inside, trained em myself...

If the dog doesn't like to go in the crate, then don't crate train him/her.

It's not right for every dog. I think crate training got so popular because it's convenient to stick your dog in a crate when you leave so people just started rationalizing how great it is and how much dogs "love" to be in a cage.

But like I said, some dogs won't mind it and in those cases it's fine. But if your dog hates being in there, don't force it.

ps i dont put my dogs in a kennel when i leave the house, they roam freely, i couldnt do that to a dog. Just to clarify, however, when people come over, i do kennel them and they are trained to go in there if I need them to. If not they bark and will jump all over guests and I dont allow that, they are separated from us when we have guests. Usually not in kennel but in second part of the house.

Did the same with my pit. She doesn't love the crate, but she will always go into ot when told. Whatever you do, do not school her in it, or school her and then throw her into it.

You don't want the crate being seen as a negative place that she goes when she is in trouble. You'll have a hell of a time getting her in there when you need her to go. I would crate mine every night when I went to bed so that she would know that it's just temporary and a place to go to sleep.

We don't crate lolly anymore unless we are taking her out of town and staying with friends or in a hotel. Good luck!

''I love showing my girl off.

I have to disagree. Your dog does not call the shots, you do. He should have no problem getting a 7 month old puppy used to the crate.

A pitbull puppy can do more damage to your house in a day than anyone should have to deal with. Crating them during the day until they are house trained well enough and have learned a decent temperament is a great way to keep your household harmony in check.

Perhaps the owner shouldnt have the pet then? Putting an animal in a box all day is not good, justifying it by the "destruction" the dog may cause signifies the owner should maybe have the dog outside then.

Amazing what people will do to an animal and think its okay. ALL WARNINGS state do not put dog in there for hours! get a different type of dog if you plan on putting it in a cage for the day. Crazy.

I agree with not using the crate as a punishment tool. You want her to want to go in the crate. When we got our rescue doggie a few years ago, we trained him by putting him in the crate then praising him and giving him a treat. We would start out by putting him in for only a minute and would then increase the time spent in there and we would do it several times a day. Within a week he was going into it on his own.

Some of you are very confused about crate training. It's neither cruel not difficult to do. I've never come across a single dog that didn't love their crate after being properly crate trained.

I can't remember the last time I had to close a crate door, my dogs love their crates and will happily curl up in them. Given their choice, they spend most of the time they sleep during the day in there anyway.

The key is that the crate is a safe place. It's like a den that is all theirs. For this reason, dogs should never be sent to their crate as punishment and should never be disciplined in their crates.

I don't advocate locking dogs in crates for extended periods of time. Crate training is mostly for the dog, so they won't be afraid to travel in their crates, go to the vet in their crates and so on. Occasionally someone with allergies, or who is afraid of dogs comes over, or a dog is sick and needs to heal and those make perfect times for short stays in the create. If the dog is trained properly, it's not stressful at all.

Its not a place to punish them with. Just a place for them to be when you need them caged..

Exactly, nothing more cruel than people who get dogs and then stick em in a kennel while they go to work so they dont "chew on couch leg"

And I agree, kennel door stays open and they love going in and out like its their little place that no one else can go.

Anyone who thinks its okay to kennel dogs for extended periods of a day every day is abusing the animal imo.

man this makes me angry! "Is 10 hours straight in the crate too much?"

Fucking woman is kenneling her dogs 10+ hours a day to save gas money!

nothing i hate more than bad dog owners. I"m a dog freak, i grew up with them and even worked at a dog daycare, I mean getting paid to hug dogs... why not..

that is part of the reason i took this dog. she belonged to one of the models we shot and i dated for a couple of minutes and she did nothing in the way of training, you couldn't walk her on a leash, didn't know any commands.

in 2.5 weeks I got her to walk on a leash, sit, stay and come. and we go on walks for alteast and hour to two hours. i took her for a check up at the vet today and he said she is in perfect health. i am also weening her off kibble and onto the B.A.R.F. diet

Thanks Warchild.

I rescued my dog off the street. She was a bait dog for fighting in south philly and had been thrown out of a car. She had bites, cuts, bruises and abrasions all along the left side of her body. She was afraid of everything that moved, and it was quite a challenge getting her readjusted.

I crated her 9 hours a day every day for the first 9 months that I had her, and was then able to let her have the house to herself while I went to work. She now roams freely with our 2 cats., with nothing more separating her from the outside world than a sliding screen door. I would venture to say that she is one of the most well adjusted, well trained, and likable dogs you will ever know. A few of my friends had the same kind of reaction when they learned that she was crated all day, but they were amazed at how excited she was to go into her cage every morning, and how she would lie in it when it was time to relax.

Everyone has an opinion, but mine is based on fact and personal experience. It worked for me. And I highly recommend that any dog owner at the least has their pet crate trained so that they will accept the crate if they need to be in one for some reason.

I wouldn't leave her in there for that long right off the bat. Sounds like you're going pretty quick for alittle pup.

Well if she's new to it, then just start with a few minutes with the door closed. When you open the door back up, give her praise and a cookie and let her jump around a bit to let the energy out. Let her know she was *very good*. Now go about your daily life for another half hour or so before you try again. In the meanwhile, leave the crate in its spot with the door open and her blankie in it so she can go there if she wants. Do this several times a day. Next day increase it to 10 minutes or so at a time. Work your way up. Remember lots of love! It's not a place she should ever go when you're mad at her.

Mine loves to go in, and he does it on the command "crate!".

Of course, he gets a big fat cookie for going in, but seems happy to do it when I ask. I would say do something to make it a happy experience -- like use their favorite treat after they get in. Keep the command simple, and one word.

My dog has a big comfy bed in the corner behind my desk and he lays there all the time.
He has free reign of the house even when we aren't home. It's his house too.

I have a dog bed next to my bed for her too and she sleeps there at night. I am not sure if that is too much. I just want a place I can put her if i have a chick over and she won't freak out.

I have never used a crate to train a dog but think I have to get one for my pup now. Usually if she has to be left alone we used baby gates to keep her in the kitchen which is pretty large. Last Friday my lil one managed to hurt herself we believe trying to jump on the kitchen chair and fell. She severely strained her neck and couldn't walk for 2 days. Thank god we were home and were able to rush her to the vet right away. I wouldn't be comfortable leaving her free to roam the kitchen now home alone. Luckily she is very rarely left alone and if she is usually just for a few hours.
