Hey Mo, hope everything is good.

I use it for messing around with. We use FreeBSD in production, but here at home when I just want to futz around I load up Ubuntu in VMWare. Super easy to get started with if you don't really know what you're doing, and with VMWare you don't need to dual boot, or dedicate a whole computer to it. I usually just maximize the VMware window on my second monitor and you can just slide between both.

Only pain is no copy paste.. If you DO have a second PC to run Ubuntu on, I'd recommend software called Synergy, which lets you share your keyboard and mouse (and copy paste!!) between multiple computers, running different OS's even. You could have three computers (mac, PC and unix if you wanted) on three monitors, and just slide your same mouse through all the screens. Your keyboard will type into whichever is active (where your cursor is).

Gl.

It's getting way closer. When I first tried it maybe ~2 years ago I couldn't even get my display resolution changed without what was for me major issues. Now it's just as easy or easier than windows to do that. When I load up Ubuntu my internet just works, display just works, didn't have to install a single driver..

Only issue right now is my mouse back button doesn't work. It's a G7 wireless. I tried to search on how to fix it, but all the tutorials are for older ubuntu versions and don't work.

Simple things, but it's getting there. I think I could leave a Ubuntu PC at my mom's house and she wouldn't have any issues using it.

I use it as my main operating system ....why use it ? for me its because its super stable.....easy to use.....software installs and removes direct from a built in software centre ( so no missing stuff/files if you delete a program)..no virus worries ...so many different reasons.

I use it for surfing the web and running a little home server. Very stable and bulletproof operating system. I also put it on my Macbook.

I use Ubuntu on my office laptop and it's fine.. Your question is if you should use it, well, in my opinion why bother, if you can use windows ;D

Of course, Ubuntu works. But now and then there will be annoyances like there's no serious graphic package (GIMP - pleeaahhse, not a serious one) etc. etc.

To the guys screaming on how unstable is windows yadayada - I'm using the dreaded vista at home, and never had any problems and it works fast.

So, why bother. The reason I do use ubuntu at office is because it just came on my notebook and I'm so lazy I didn't bother to switch :D

Its great for netbooks, just download an Ubuntu Netbook Remix and load it on a thumb-drive and you're ready to try it or install it. Great, quick, and stable. Gotta love it

Ubuntu is a great OS. It's a shame there is absolutely no software available for it that is worth a shit. Those of us who need to do real work using tools other than an email client and a browser can't use it.

Ubuntu is the best Linux distribution I've tried so far, however... It's still Linux and it will never be anything like Windows. By this I mean that you always need a higher level of computer knowledge before trying any Linux distribution out.

Can't stand Ubuntu personally. Using WinXP only because of certain apps, but otherwise I'd still be using FreeBSD. Not a Linux fan at all, but Unix itself has always been more reliable than anything out of Redmond.

It doesn't play nice out of the box with Toshiba Satellite series, but does with pretty much all other hardware. For the Toshiba pieces of junk you need to manually build the driver for the RealTek wireless adaptor/nic, as well as go through hoops to get the built-in mic and cam to function properly.

Aside from those setup issues though, runs great!

Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. Are you curious about Linux and Ubuntu? Trying them out has never been easier!

No idea what you're talking about considering most Toshiba's have Atheros wireless adapters which are heavily supported under Linux

I recommend ubuntu for anyone or any family member that uses the computer for email, talking to friends and surfing the net sometimes... It's safe, it's fast, it stays that way and it's stable. Perfect for 90% of Internet users.

It's the OS for the Machine that is my cable box but work station wise, it's Windows 7 for a reason.

I realized that i made a question to which answers are Chinese to me

So if i use Ubuntu and save files, install programs, etc it means that that data will be hosted by Ubuntu's servers and not in my machine?

Ubuntu is an OS. Like Windows, and MacOS. You can read/write to HFS+ (mac) and NTFS (XP+) filesystems with it if you set it up to do so.

Given your current questions, I'd suggest you just use what works for you on your systems, and let who manages your servers handle that sort of thing.

If you wish to try it without having to partion or commit try Wubi. It is a special version of Ubuntu that will install on Windows like a normal windows program and can be easily removed using the Windows "Add or Remove" function in the Windows control panel.
That is what I would suggest for anybody wishing to try it out without having to partition your disk. Perfect for new users to take a test drive. If you don't care for it just uninstall it like any other Windows program.

I think most people don't actually know where their favorite functions are located in GIMP... Personally I find the menu system way more intuitive and faster to use than Photoshop. Also, it's been unfortunate that the "stable" version of GIMP being included in most distributions was actually a few years out of date and most users would have to go find the newer, rewritten version themselves.

I'm not the best designer, but I have designed a lot of my own shit as a webmaster over the last 7 years using only GIMP and never had any complaints.

Maybe check out these? http://creativenerds.co.uk/tutorials...astering-gimp/

I use Gimp on a few random things... I just find that it is limited on automation and image compression so it doesn't work well with daily tasks, for me.
