The thing that makes this one different is that its a mile down or something. Not sure if they've had a blowout this far down before, so they are in uncharted territory. The gulf stream can carry this all the way up the east coast..

Seriously, this thing has been freaking me out so bad I'm taking a head in the sand approach to it at this point. There's fuck all I can do to stop it. When it gets here I will do what I can to help the clean up efforts. There is a very strong chance my beaches will never be the same.

I think it shows you are not a sociopath. I am also having problems trying to remain positive. I feel helpless and wish there is something I could do like donate or volunteer so this leak is stopped but there is nothing other than trying to help the victims. The one good thing that the south has on its side is hurricanes. A hurricane will clean that stuff up in a jiffy. They gotta stop the leak though! Its already touching my Parish in Louisiana.

Alaska is still fucked up 20 years after the Valdez disaster. Proof positive that it's physically impossible to effectively clean that shit up once it gets past a certain point.

I spend a lot of time in the Clearwater, FL area. The beaches there are truly gorgeous and the wildlife is amazing.

To say that BP is going to pay for it all is laughable. They may indeed end up paying for the actual cleanup effort. But that is to say nothing of all the economic fallout, and the environmental repercussions that will last for decades, if not more.

I am against offshore drilling. There is only so much our planet can take. There is no reason that with our technology and the collective intelligence that we are not further along in developing alternative fuel sources.

Oh, wait, yes, there is a reason. It's called money for the oil companies.

There is a boy...well, young man now...from my tiny little town. He graduated high school with my oldest son, so that would put him around 22. He is bright, and has already been on that Shark Tank show and got funding for another venture. But the one I am referring to now takes sunflowers and coverts their oil to biodiesel fuel, with the remaining 'shucks' turned into livestock feed.

Breaking our dependence on oil...not just foreign oil...is essential to the welfare of our planet.

And now you may feel free to call me a tree hugging, hippie liberal. :D

This is my home. I've lived other places but I always come back here. Clearwater beach has been having some really rough times due to "the church". They are pretty much making it so small businesses not tied to the organization can't survive. Now this, I really don't know what will happen. Its foolish to think the oil won't come here, when it does I don't know how the community will recover.

Agreed. I think the government needs to make an example of BP and make as much cost stick to that company as possible. They need to make it hurt so bad financially that other companies will stand up and take notice. That is the only thing they understand. If the rewards outweigh the risks it will continue to be business as usual. They need to all have the shut off valves, they need to be sure they are all functional, and someone needs to spot check them to ensure this is done and impose heavy fines if not. They need to have contingency plans for the worst case scenario, they should have had a plan in place for this.

The gulf is just a bad place to put oil wells, period. Its too risky. Hurricanes come through here all the time, every time they have to detach the rigs, etc etc. Huge procedure, lost production time, etc. I mean, its not an industry I'm hugely familliar with, but as an outsider it seems it would be more cost effective to put more wells on stable ground, in say Alaska.

heres the thing...they could have "stuck a cork in it" already. BP is trying to syphen the oil off as well to recover lost profits and in the meantime the disaster is ongoing. I am speaking for myself, yes I like my gasoline powered car, I like having a wide variety fresh fruit all year round, I like having all sorts electronic gadgets, computers, appliances at my disposal, I like having manufactured clothes that are made by cheap labor in other countries, I like having my TVs, Internet, Wifi, connected all the time. All these things require OIL.
