Partial List of Crimes You Can Now Get Away With

Suffer These Crimes in Oakland? Don't Call the Cops - Jul 2010

Oakland's police chief is making some dire claims about what his force will and will not respond to if layoffs go as planned. Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.

Some 80 officers were to be let go at midnight last night if a last-minute deal was not reached. That's about ten percent of the work force. That deadline has been extended to Tuesday morning with a possible council vote at 10:30 a.m.

Here's a partial list:

- burglary - theft - embezzlement - grand theft - grand theft:dog - identity theft - false information to peace officer - required to register as sex or arson offender - dump waste or offensive matter - discard appliance with lock - loud music - possess forged notes - pass fictitious check - obtain money by false voucher - fraudulent use of access cards - stolen license plate - embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400) - extortion - attempted extortion - false personification of other - injure telephone/ power line - interfere with power line - unauthorized cable tv connection - vandalism - administer/expose poison to another's.

LINK

We should just disband the Oakland police. Why continue to pay them when they are obviously so hamstrung that they can't even do the job.

They're too busy arresting people for marijuana possession and citing tickets to be bothered with trivial things such as theft, extortion, and vandalism man...

Those are all things that don't generate money for the police department, why would they want to follow up on those?

Who cares about serving and protecting when you can do a disservice by collecting cash from people late to work and tossing people in jail for enjoying a little weed?!

Like everywhere, they are having budgetary issues. Close to $200,000 a year it costs per officer? I wonder if that includes just the officer or if that is also supposed to include all of the infrastructure and other assets like weapons and vehicles. If salary, health benefits, and retirement benefits are adding up too close to $200,000 a year... I really don't have much sympathy. The union should be willing to back down a little bit to save those jobs and the public should not be making sacrifices because the union refuses to do so.

yeah I think about that when I see 'gang bangers' being aressted by the filth. gangs cost ALOT of money and gang members have absolutly no intention of ever 'not being' total worthless fuck heads.

be interesting to run a tab on about 100 of em and see what they are costing us in LEO manpower, court cost, and victim expenses... as well as social expenses and medical expenses. wouldn't you love to see those numbers?

I love how they say if you have suffered one of these crimes you should go online to report it to the police.

Um.... isn't the computer usually one of the first things to go in a burglary? So what then? You're supposed to go to the library to get online to report your burglary? But what if someone stole your car? The cops won't respond for Grand Theft either, so how do you get to the library?

Okay, so you hitch a ride to the library, you get online and you're ready to report these crimes you've suffered.... but there's a problem. Someone has stolen your identity too and already filed a false report with them (which will also not be responded to), and has put them on alert for anyone calling pretending to be you, so now the fuzz is on their way to the library to arrest you. When they find you, you're cuffed and stuffed into the squad car, and they find a MJ joint in your pocket, so now you're facing 20 years in the federal can.

Sounds like a solid plan Oakland.

It sounds more like political posturing to create a public uproar in hopes of getting more concessions out of the union.

1) Stop arresting people for bullshit victimless drug possession and prostitution "crimes".

2) Anyone arrested, charged AND convicted gets a bill from the government for the costs involved and make this debt like student loans and tax debt so they can not bankrupt it away.

Budget problems solved?

How are you going to get inmates to pay their "crime debt"? If they don't have any money, won't this "crime debt" simply add to the debt total already on the government books? Won't this simply be another debt that we.... the actual taxpayers.... have to cover?

How is it going to be more debt when the tax payers have to pay for it anyways now? And a lot, if not most, people charged with a misdemeanor get little to no jail time.

Okay... and so then, if they don't pay? There's no debtor prison here. You can't force them to pay. And they're already criminals, so I'm sure they wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

If they don't pay they don't pay. You treat it as any type of debt. Send them to collections, go after assets, garnish wages, etc. For poor people they could appeal similar to how people can make deals with the IRS if they prove a total inability to pay the debt in a reasonable time period. The majority of middle class to upper class people that get charged with DUIs and shit like that will pay.

Won't they just pay with cash made from stolen goods? I mean, the police have publicly announced that they won't be responding to burglaries and stuff any more.... they may as well have said, "Go rob anyone you can... we won't be interrupting you."

Well from what I saw of the sheriffs department in LA, they get a small fortune every time they move a prisoner from the jail to the court room. So I'll bet they can find the money if they just do what business's has had to do, cut back and stream line to make a profit, or even to survive.
Government is bloated, they pay most state people too much and the retirement is crazy, if they work for 15 years for the state, they get medical for life.
I know a person that works for the state, oversees doctor licences for the medical board and doesn't even have a high school diploma or GED

Wanna balance the state budget, simple, bring back prop 187

think about that

Well, I mean do this instead of not enforcing the law like they are doing now. I don't see any reason why every police department in the US should not do this. Sure would save taxpayers a lot of money and help plug budget holes (though I do think spending should be cut too). Think of all the money wasted on these stupid celebrity cases like Phil Spector, etc. It costs the state a fortune.

Several years ago I was living in an apartment and my car got broken into. They took my stereo, a few CDs and the change from my ashtray. The worst part is that they destroyed the passenger side lock and broke out the window. I called the police and they just had an officer call me and and take the report over the phone. She told me plainly that the odds of them catching who did this and me getting my stuff back were pretty much zero. She said they just do the report so that I can use it for my insurance claim.
