If a affiliate program misses a payment, should you get...

Some type of "sorry about that issue here is a bonus" or "sorry" and move on.

or take it as business as usual.

For me it just depends. What was the reason for the missed payment? How quickly did you notify them and then how quickly did they resolve and send out the payment?

You are quick.

I don't really care about the bonus.

So, if a program misses payment for two periods, its ok and business as usual?

Totally depends on the response as to why its late/missing. I personally would be happy to get my money, no bonus needed other than if it was bounced checks and it caused you financial penalties.

It really does depend on the program.

I know someone with many millions in assets who at one point this year had his power shut off and was being declined for $6 meals.

Cash flow issues.

He has since rebounded and is fine ... it was a single hiccup in 16 years ...

Sometimes shit happens. You have to get to the bottom of things.

7 days late and once a year is ok, but when it happens often, then I worry about it.

Well, that sounds personal and I would never expect that kind of information from a program owner.

I would want a straight answer and something to re-insure my insecurities about the affiliate program.

Is "often" the keyword when a program is living week by week?

With some programs you won't even get "sorry", and you can consider yourself lucky if you get paid at all...

A sorry at least I'd hope. If it's a program I'm super regular with then a little bonus would be nice. Like hey I know you pump serious traffic at us day in and day out.

Sorry though at least. Just goes a long way in my book at least.

Some programs were put in a bind with funds tied up in Webmaster Checks and then Epassporte. Perhaps it is just a short term cash flow issue, but I would think the sponsor would be better served by sending out an apology if they missed a pay date.

I personally get offended and take it as a sign of disrespect.

What if someone owed you money and you saw them out a bar buying shots?

So, how long should I wait before bugging an affiliate program for payment?

I have not been paid in 33 days.

If they owe you, then harrass them.
But make sure that you are not overlooking anything (for example some ridiculously long hold-times or a check in your PO box that you never empty...).

If a payment is delayed, I think it should be paid in the future with interest.

Screw that.

7 - 14 days late without firm statement that payment has been resent/will be resolved with firm date established = stop all new promotion

30 days late without firm date no more than one week away = Pull all links.

45 days late = "Name and shame"

Possible exceptions only if they've been honest and upfront the entire time. Likewise if you catch them in any lie or they fail to meet a commitment to send payment after initial contact, pull all links immediately and never go back even if they do finally pay.

Too many affiliates do nothing and I think that only contributes to the problem. I sent the joins, I expect to be paid ON TIME. Especially on revshare. You should never have to beg for your money.

I hate asking for money that is owed to me. It puts me in an awkward position of asking an affiliate rep to ask his boss if he cut a check or not. Most of the time the affiliate rep has no clue or control if payment was sent.

Hopefully you've at least asked them about it? I usually ask at about 7 - 14 days late.

One program underpaid me for 4 periods that added up to a few thousand. My affiliate rep was sick and never got back to me. I finally got a hold of another rep and he took care of my situation by instantly paying through ACH.

The other program has a well known "bro" of the the "bros" affiliate rep. He has known of my situation for awhile now.

If this can happen to me, this can happen to any affiliate.

I would like an apology, maybe a t-shirt, gift card, etc.

I expect a bonus. Some programs have paid me bonuses or made it up to me with perhaps a bonus unreleased content package I can promote their girl with before everyone else...

But I expect something in return.

I am going on 35 days without being paid.

What is a fair amount of "bonus" should I get?

Being privy to the situation at hand, having similar situation happen to me, and knowing how much volume you send first hand..

I'd say at least 3 quality hookers, $500 cash, and a very well thought out apology letter.

If an affiliate program misses payment on a consistent basis does it mean they are about to go under?

You should be ready to switch sponsors at a moment's notice.

Your sponsors are buying traffic from you on credit. If they were asking for a loan, how much would you loan them? Don't let them accumulate more than that.

If payment is one second later than you are comfortable with, redirect your traffic to someone else until they get within the risk factors that you are comfortable with.

Once they are back within acceptable limits, start sending traffic again.

If I have a sponsor behind by one payment I insist on a firm commitment to get current. Two payments and traffic comes to a screeching halt.

Not that they notice, or are necessarily hurt by this, the point is not to punish them, the point is simply that my margin is only about 10-15% on joins and I cant afford to pour money down a hole.

Continuing to provide traffic to a non paying sponsor simply proves your powerlessness and dependence on them.

So stop being a parasite, get the power, then wield the power.

if an affiliate program misses a payment you should take your links down. cause the next step is usually 2 missed payments.
