Welfare recipient lives in million-dollar home

This is why we need to stop welfare NOW. Ten years this family has been living off of welfare while living in a million dollar home on the water.

Quote:
A Seattle woman who is receiving welfare assistance from Washington state also happens to live in a waterfront house on Lake Washington worth more than a million dollars.

Federal agents raided the home this weekend but have not released the woman or her husband's name because they have not officially been charged with a crime.

However, federal documents obtained by KING 5 News show the couple currently receives more than $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, plus state and government disability checks and food stamps. They have been receiving the benefits since 2003.

The 2,500 square-foot home, which includes gardens and a boat dock, is valued at $1.2 million. And even though the couple has been receiving the benefits for nearly 10 years, records show that they accurately listed the address of their current home when applying for the state and federal benefits.

A federal official told KING 5 that the couple likely took advantage of a loophole, which allows low-income individuals to receive financial assistance to help them pay their rent and move away from housing projects. However, the law does not require officials to verify what type of home the benefits recipient is living in.

As if the million dollar home weren't enough, the supposedly low-income couple also gave money to various charities and traveled around the world to locales in Turkey, Tel Aviv and resort towns in Mexico, according to court records.
Fuckers.

We don't need to stop welfare, we need to stop welfare abuses such as this. I've never received welfare myself, nor has anyone in my family, but I'm more than happy to have part of my paycheck pay for someone and his family who can't find a job in this economy, are disabled, etc.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke had argued back in 2008 when the crisis hit that revealing borrower details would create a stigma that would have led to more banks collapsing. And the Fed fought to keep the details of the loans, which totaled $7.77 trillion, secret long after.

Yeah it's scary when you see that over 300k people stopped being part of the work force last month, giving the unemployment % a boost which I'm sure Obama will hail as a victory.

Welfare reform in the 90's was suppose to take care of this, but as soon as the government fixes something, it becomes more fucked. major reason Obamacare scares me

They are here, too. To get extended disability benefits and things of that nature, you basically need to own 0 assets (there are a few exceptions.) Not sure how this couple was able to own that house and get benefits. My bet is the house is not in their name, or they "rent" from a rich family member or friend.

Your on crack.

I have a friend who is disabled. He has Hydrocephalus, more commonly known as "water on the brain". He's full retired from the US Army after two years, and fully retired from the US Post Office after working there for two years. He also gets state disability, and social security. He lives in a nice, brand new house, and drives around in a brand new huge truck. He worked four years of his life, two in the military and two at the post office as a fucking janitor, hasn't worked for twenty years, and pulls in over $100k a year - all because he "might get headaches".

For every one person who needs to be on welfare, there's a dozen people abusing it.

Welfare was supposed to be a temporary thing for six months when you were down on your luck. It's become a way of living now.

there was one a bit ago about a guy who won the lottery and continued legally getting welfare.

The thing is sometimes good rules have some bad results..

Mandatory vaccines will kill some people , but they save alot more people.

Forcing someone to sell all their assets to get welfare sounds good on paper but turns tricky in reality very quickly.

Most countries/states will allow you to own a home and receive "wlfare". So without a "limit" you will see cases like this from time to time.

Your friend is abusing the system. You should be more mad at him than at the standard person on welfare.

If you were really that upset about welfare abuse, you should report your friend. Snitches get stitches... but just sayin...

there are always ways around rules.. are you forced to sell everything ? like photographs ? clothes ? wedding rings ?

if you looked hard enough you would likely find someone in your country with $1 million dollars worth of something and still collecting welfare..

Here I don't think they count your house in any calculations of what you can claim - just income + savings + any other property.

This is just an example of a person abusing the system, like the original article. It's easy to say "for every one person who needs to be on welfare, there's a dozen abusing it", but that doesn't make those numbers true.

Again, the abuses need to stop, helping people in need should continue. Why do people have such an easy time taking a stand against our money being used for social services, to help our own people, but don't stand up to padding the wallets of Wall St. with taxpayer funds? I'll never understand this mentality, never.

notice they say "lives in" but clearly not "owns"

also they applied using the address and dont seem to have broken any laws since they are not charged with anything. they were probably hoping for drug bust.

He was best man at my wedding. For the most part, he's not welcome in my house. He wasn't here for Thanksgiving, and I won't be exchanging Christmas gifts with him either. At this point I'm more friends with his family than him.

Yeah, that's a number I clearly pulled out of my ass.
It's just odd how I know a number of people on welfare, yet it seems tome that most of them are abusing the system. Maybe I need some friends with more class.

I have a friend of mine who has two teen boys, and it's more profitable for him not to work. He gets to live in Section Eight housing - which he claims isn't bad in his area - and gets money and food. Any money he makes on the side is just extra spending money.

My other friends were also on Welfare. He had a boat, a big truck, a brand new harley, ATVs, iPhones.... Yet he was on welfare.

Welfare needs to become a short term fix, not a way of life. Six months, and that's it. After that, you need to lean on you family or friends.

Just got hit by the DWP for $1200, because they said our meter has been broken for over a year. How do they know it's $1200 if the meter is broken and they told us this last month, but haven't replaced the meter yet?

Mrs. Obama said the budget, to be unveiled by the White House next Monday, would include $1.9 billion in funds for counseling and support to military spouses and families; $1.3 billion to reduce shortages in military child care; more money (she did not provide a precise figure) to improve and build schools on military bases; $84 million for career development for military spouses, and $14 million in new funding for Coast Guard housing.
abuse of any system is very rampant among even the military, as rochard has pointed out.

the amount of money spent on just funding babysitters for people would shock people. As I postd in above quote, they want 1.9 bil for childcare just for military lol

so wait, because you in the military, taxpayers gotta pay to watch your kids? wow

and then 84mil to train your spouses? pork barrel

Isn't that was they look at when someone goes bankrupt?

I don't think it's fair to force anyone to sell everything in order to collect welfare, or even go bankrupt. Everything should be added up to determine eligibility. ie. case by case.

In this case, it looks like someone was lazy figuring out their situation.

So basically you are jealous right

This happened to my grandmother about 3 years ago. I had to give her money to pay because they sent a bill for $900.00 at once and she's retired, limited income. First, I wanted a detailed explanation from the power company (it was an electric bill). They took an average monthly cost of the months they claimed it was broken from previous bills. They said my grandmother should of reported the reduced monthly electric bill because it was a sign of something wrong and that she was responsible.

I paid the bill, but I argued a bit and asked them, "what if I tell you she's been living with me for the past x amount of months and we shut the power off at the box?" They didn't have a response and I'm sure I could of fought it.

This is abuse and welfare is abused in every western country at the moment that doesnt mean it should be stopped. I needs to be overseen, this case could have been closed 9 years ago. You should ask yourself why the stupid authorities have let this go on for 10 years costing tax payers more money than it should or when it could have helped people that really needs a relief.

You do know there are honest people that lose their jobs or loans that cant be paid because of the tough economy.

There will always be people that needs welfare for different reasons even in a great economy.

In this case the authorities havent done their job. 10 Friggin years, cmon.

If welfare wouldnt be around it would mean more drugs, more crime and more homeless people.

Is that an option ?

You have some worthless friends. There are honest people that need help that can't get it because of friends like yours.

I agree with you there, that it shouldn't be something you plan on using long-term. There ought to be back-to-work programs and other helpful things put in place. We have those kinds of things up north (O Canada, eh).

The "leaning on family an friends" thing is a tough one. In many cases, family & friends just can't give anymore, or refuse to based on prior events (read: enabling).

Possibly off-topic, but I often see groups of people in the USA trying to raise money for this or that person's medical bills. This is something you rarely see up north (eh). We might be socialists in our neighbors eyes, but our health case system gets the medical bills out of the way.

I'm not jealous at all. LOL. Far from it.

He's got a new but small house in a crappy town and a truck and two kids who see him once every five years, and he hasn't gotten laid in the past six years. Yet he's so fucking bored with his life because he's got nothing to do with his free time.

The saddest part about those two is that they probably claim to be proud Republicans and just like Vendzilla scared of Obama care without having a clue what its about.

Something up with that story. Can you get 10 years worth of welfare? Anyway, it sounds like they were wealthy before and are hiding money. Maybe undeclared international income. Maybe doing it to make it look like they're not making any money or to avoid paying taxes.

The gov gives away free money, some just don't know how to get it. Had a client worth 10 million dollars on welfare, living on park avenue in Manhattan in a rent stabilized apartment. She just need to keep her annual income below 20k to qualify so we stayed away from dividends and bonds.

One can be on welfare (in most...if not all states) or SSI and own a home and one car...as far as I know the value of the home or car do not come into play. You cannot own other assets such as property...a boat...RV etc.

I was under the impression that you could get welfare for as long as you qualified.

The thing is once you qualify, if your able to live within you needs, there's never a reason to come off of welfare.

My buddy I mentioned above can go and get a job at any time he wants. But why bother? He's pulling in over $100k a year and hasn't worked in twenty years.
