yeah lol, but I never really agreed with attendance policies for smart kids. If she's an honor student, who cares if she's in class or not as long as she remains one? She's obviously keeping up and if anything the school/class/teacher is probably underperforming for her and a waste of time.

Thats actually very true.

We are having a similar issue with my son right now. He is in a private bilingual school and well ahead of 98% of the class but the school does not want to move him up a grade or create a special class for him and a couple others. I have even said I would pay for it but they wont do it. To me, its holding him back.

When I was 13 I grew despondent after having just moved to a new part of the country and then my father died, so I was a bad boy skipped a lot of school. The family court decided the correct thing to do was to sentance me to 18 months in a juvenile home and make my mother pay for it while she still had 5 other kids and a new mortgage and a dead husband. That was over 30 years ago. So this kind of shit is nothing new.

Dont get me wrong. What was done to you was not right either. There are far better ways to deal with situations like yours and hers.

And now days the arrest/jail record is more of a problem than it ever was.

I remember guys that got sent to Juvenile homes but it was different from being sent to Juvenile Hall which was the Jail. One was on your record and the other was not. ( Not sure in your case ) But I have seen lots of people grow up and NOT get great positions in companies because the company will not risk what that " Sealed " record is about.

Right. I think what happened to her is ridiculous. What happened to me was also ridiculous. The system is not geared to helping you is the obvious point. Just to clear their docket and call "next" to the clerk is a days work.

btw, nobody ever tried to counsel me or whatever before it all came down. They DID try to guilt induce me by telling me how much grief I was causing my mother who just lost her husband. As if I also hadn't just lost a father and all that shit. Not that I'm bitter, and theres no need to tell me to "get over it" as people have done in the past. It's just to illustrate that this shit happens and it's our tax dollars at work.

All it would have taken was some weekly grief counselling I think, plus possibly letting my mother place me voluntarily so she could remove me when it was a good time. Instead they forced her to pay for much longer than was needed at the worst time of her life. It was pure punishment, and there was only 3 counselling sessions while I was there. Once per 6 months.

we also have crazy curfew rules. I have actually been out in town when police shows up in vans arresting teens who are out past curfew... crazy huh.

What about the god damned parents? They leave their under 18 kids because they got a divorce? Where the fuck is THAT legal? Mom and dad need to be thrown in jail here for abandonment, not the 17 year old working multiple jobs, caring for siblings, and going to school all at the same time.

You are right Rules are rules and laws are laws but there is such a thing as discretion. If people used that and some damn common sense, this would not have happened.

Punish the kid that takes 1 more day out of school but has awesome grades and is working to support family. but let the slacker that does dope and steals and drinks get away with hitting the exact Max days he can skip.

yeah, it seems to have been handled under some "zero tolerance" bullcrap that is only fitting for a very few things, but is applied more and more to everything. The SIMPLEST thing for any institution to do is create a bunch of zero tolerance regulations or rules you are agreeing to. No more lawsuits.

Sooooo very not true any more. Many states in fact I belive most of them now say " oh yeah its erased " etc but then when its checked, it still shows as Something happend un X year. they may not see what but something and thats just enough to screw her.

That totally sucks for the girl. From my understanding public schools get X amount in grants that depend on the school's attendance record. I was under the impression if a child has too many unexcused absences they had the right to put the parent in jail not the child.

Also if she's working that many hours and its brought to the judges attention shouldnt this be a flag for child services?

Yep. and the school also gets X number of dollars per student that is enrolled and passing ( also attending ) the honors programs as well. and they more per honors student than regular.

You would think that child services would have put a stop to her work a long time ago and that someone with the brains would have stepped up and helped out. But we all know this world has become a Help your self world and fuck everyone else.
