Here in California they just passed a law where all pet stores are going to be forced to only sell animals from shelters and rescues only.

Puppy Mills will start working with, or creating their own, shelters.

The more puppies and cats the shelters sell, the more money the shelter makes. The more pure breeds of puppies and cats they have that people want to buy, the more money they will make.

Not selling at pet stores just brings them all underground and selling in alternative cenarios.

On Craigslist here in California the breeders use frontmen/women to sell litters as if they were just normal folks with a litter to sell for a "rehoming" fee.

I remember when I was younger I used to see pet stores in the mall. I haven't seen them in years. This backs up what Bladewide says above about California laws.

My dog recently passed away and it's getting to the point where I think I want a new dog. I've been looking online at pet rescues. Not much sense in me buying a dog that someone else will eventually buy when I can save a dog's life by adapting from a local shelter.

Should be banned in as many countries as possible. If you are after a dog or cat, their is absolutely no reason to use the breeding farms. Their are rescue centres all over the UK (and I am sure all over the U.S too) with pretty much every dog breed imaginable available for rehoming.

I don't think pet shops are good...but what is the intended effect of this ban? To push people toward buying from a breeder or adopting from a shelter? That sounds like a band aid. If they would make breeding without a license a criminal offense it would override the need for so many dogs to be needing adoption, since they would never be born in the first place. When all of these dogs are homeless in shelters waiting to die, why is it legal for any asshole to breed litters of pups, whether intentional or not?

People should be able to breed, but only with a license. It would trim down the overall number of dogs being born. Just like there's already too many guns, there's also too many dogs.

They earn some $ as you have to get them chipped, vaccinated.

Stopping pet stores from selling animals is one step in the right direction to stopping pet mills. They are their #1 client.

That purebreed you are getting from the pet store is most likely trauhahahahahaed by all the shit the pet store and puppy mill owners put him through.

The second step is to stop peer to peer sales. Lots of people go to shelters or wherever they can find cheap dogs and then turn around and sell them for a premium on Craigslist.

Giving away animals or selling them cheaply is only putting them in harms way. If a family can't afford to buy an animal, they probably shouldn't own one.

Lastly, the final step to fixing the issue with puppy mills is to have all animals registered and tracked through a central authority.

All this may seem excessive, but anything else just leaves room to people using living animals for financial gain which leads to abuse.
