I'm curious about a few things currently being practised by spammers,

...like for example when someone has words like "enlargement" or "Viagra" blocked in their email client's rules, they do so because they want emails containing those words to go directly to their "deleted items" folder (or as I call it, the "shit" bin)... why do spammers change those words in their spam to things like "en-large-ment" or "V*iagra" etc? Is it because you think that if you can fool people's spam filters they will eventually break down and buy something from you? Tell me you don't think people are really that stupid, please.

Another question: There seems to be several different techniques for spamming as far as I can tell. One is to just send out mass emails that seem to come from various sources (yet many are obviously from the same spammer) that contain an ad and a link --- "legitimate" spam if you will, while others seem to contain an attachment that when opened, loads some kind of adware or scumware on the recipient's computer that continually does the spamming for you. My question is, do spammers have an "upper class" and "lower class" structure thing going? If you are a spammer who simply sends ads and alters keywords to trick spam filters do you look down upon other spammers who send out .exe files that load scumware? Is there descrimination among spammers? Does one type of spammer think he is better than other types of spammers? Do you ever find yourselves saying "I'm a nicer spammer than that guy over there".... ?

No really, I'm very curious as to how the mind of a typical spammer works. And don't be shy about answering, we all know you're here, many of you have openly posted about spamming in the past. Speak up.

Lastly, how come there are no trade shows for spammers? Or.... are there? If not, then how come there are no booths at internext run by spammers to sell their massive lists to other prospective spammers?

When someone asks me what I do, I usually say I'm a webmaster and that I run websites that range from mainstream business to adult.

How do spammers answer that question?

If you don't say "I'm a spammer".... why? Why not proclaim proudly what you do? Shout it from the rooftops, or are you not proud of what you do?

When I was spamming I'd always let people know I was a spammer. If they questioned it, I'd tell them my daily earnings and they'd be pro-spam.

One of my best friends in school was a hardcore anti so I told him I'd give him a spammer. Pretty soon he was cashing 4 figure clickcash checks

i believe there is a tiered system of what certain mailers will or wont do.

hypothetically, if i were to spam, i would use remove lists constantly exactly for the aformentioned reason - there is no use saturating people with marketing that they dont give a fuck about.

hijacking peoples' systems is kind of gay and that's basically derived from the mantra that anyone will do anything for a buck. getting grandma's dsl shut off and having her have to go through the motions of calling the phone company etc etc etc is unnecessary bullshit.

this is why the can-spam shit is actually a pretty good law because it frowns on seedier practices. if companies could follow suit and allow certain commercial messages to bypass the filters, thereby putting some "trust" in the mailing community, people themselves could control their own inboxes and the people who really want viagra and shit can get it.

No suprise really. They just generally don't give a fuck and are money at any cost type of people and many people who aren't spammers only aren't because they don't know how. humm, here some info you asked

spam convention are rare and heavily private
for the filter
no one really care about beating your outlook filter
but more aol/hotmail/ large domains filter
and there is no discrimination at all between mailers
more friendly-communauty than adult
but hell more scammer too

Yes, don't even get me started on the whole practice of having fake "removal" links that instead of removing you it just confirms your email as being active. Spammers have drawn the comparison to receiving junk mail and flyers in your real mailbox to spam. The thing is, I can put a sign on my real mailbox that says "NO FLYERS" and can eliminate about 75% of the crap that I get in one shot.

I don't have that option with just a regular email inbox. Not the way spammers operate..... and then they wonder why people wish them a long agonizing death.

This is also where the law comes in to play to help enforce the practice of remove lists. For those of you who are making generalizations about spammers, such as "All spammers want to find ways to mail child porn" that is preposterous. That is something that would come out of the mouth of someone who is uneducated in a field, and making one sided statements. Take for example a parent talking to their child, they might say "Porn websites are evil, they are scammers trying to steal your money". It isn't a complete lie, yes there are scammers in the adult industry[Example in this thread] , but that doesn't mean that everyone in the business is a scammer. I must say, the notion of seeing a spammer's door being kicked in by a gang of cops, watching them dismantle and confiscate all his servers and equipment, watching him get dropped to the floor in handcuffs as he cries like a lil girl..... get's me all afluster.

For the fucking clueless...

I was (obviously) talking about spammers who send out mass unsoliscited emails by the thousands, by the millions, on a daily basis. Someone running a legit opt-in list is excempt from this inquisition, I'm not even sure why I have to say it. The word "duh" comes to mind.

If you can't see the diffence between a chronic power-spammer and someone running a legit list you need more of a bitchslap than I can muster, because there is obviously something not right in your cerebral cortex.

Anyone who asks what I do since I don't "work" I come right out and say I'm a spammer. Some people would be like "ahh so you're that asshole" in a joking manner, or become curious and ask a SHITLOAD of questions where I literally have to say, "ok enough about me, what do you do".

I personally see it higher up on the "ethical" scale than porn sites, as do a lot of people I know as well.

CDSmith, it seems to me that you're not trying to gain any insight but just trying to lure people into shouting matches.

I can understand the outrage that people treat spam with nowadays, it has be a disturbing trend and has left many people feeling helpless. Only compounding the situation is the seeming ineffectiveness of new laws or other anti-spam measures.

Since you're set in your views, I don't understand what you hope to gain by starting a thread like this. If you maintained a mature attitude and encouraged honest discussion and constructive criticism, then maybe some dialogue might have occured. But instead you chose to simply whack the mole as soon as it popped its head up. You're obviously angry at spammers for whatever reason, and I suspect your anger is partly motivated by envy. This has become a cliche, but very few people disagree that succesful spammers make a lot of money.

A lot of people which depend on the internet to make money have suffered a great deal from spammers. People who run real opt-in lists probably have had their newsletters blocked by all too sensitive spam filters.

Battle lines have been drawn and it seems that the two groups are impossible to reconcile.

The reason spam is prominent is rooted in simple economics. As long as there is a profit to be made with relatively little risk, people will continue to do it. With the ready availability of internet connectivity and the immense market for spam, it is a certainty the spam will continue unless something more drastic is done.

Lastly, I'd just like to say that I am not advocating spam in the least. I think it's terrible how some unskilled, unethical and unscrupulous person can spend a couple of bucks on readily available software and make more money than people who have worked for years, building relationships and establishing contacts. This is akin to those individuals who set up pyramid schemes in the real world and damage a legitimate business' chances for making money.

CD, I love ya man but you are clueless on this issue. I sent email for years and followed every law on the books but still had hassles from asswipes like spamcop. THERE IS NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR A MAILING LIST TO BE DOUBLE OPT-IN. Do you really believe that programs that pay for email addresses don't mail to the people that don't confirm their address? They just don't pay the webmaster for it. If I go to a site and enter your email address to enter and don't confirm it I guarentee you will start getting mail.

As for putting the "no flyers" sign on your mailbox. I don't get that one at all. You put up a sign and your mailman sorts your mail for you? About 90% of the stuff that shows up in my physical mailbox is junk and goes straight into the shredder. With actual mail I get 4 or 5 CC applications a day so I have to take the time to shread them. Takes me far longer to deal with real junk mail than it does to deal with junk email each day.

The questions I have asked above are straight-out said and asked honestly, and most of the answers have been forthright and without argument. The only reply that prompted me to question the poster's intelligence was the one which attempted to lump in legitimate opt-in lists with outright spam, so I'm not sure why you feel the need to yammer on about arguments and envy.

Detoxed --- In any event, selling my email address without my consent doesn't mean I opted in to anything. Fact is, the privacy policy of most boards is that they say they DON'T disclose your information.

And I'm not sure why you'd be getting the least bent out of shape over the type of spammer I was describing getting arrested.

No, again you misunderstand. The mailman won't sort my mail, but I can sort through 4 or 5 envelopes pretty quickly. The "NO FLYERS" sign is for those kids who stuff ads in your mailbox.... they see the sign and they move on to the next house, thus ridding you of getting a ton of useless shit every week.

With junk email, even the crap in my inbox must be inspected in case the filters caught a few legit emails, so I don't see how it could take anyone less time to go through their emails than it does to go through their physical mail. No way in hell that works for me Ulf, no disrespect buddy. 4 or 5 envelopes?.... maybe 2 minutes. 300+ emails?.... You saying you can scope out 300 emails in less than 2 minutes? If you say yes then I'm sorry but I just don't believe you.

I get maybe 20 or 30 spam emails a day. I get about the same in my real mailbox. The point being that I don't just drag it to the trash can. Every credit card, mortgage proposal, financial deal I get goes through the shredder. So I have to waste my time shredding the stuff and hauling it out to the garbage man. I forgot you are in Canada but it's illegal in the US for people to put things in your mailbox. Only you and the mailman are allowed to do that.

I still don't see spam as the massive problem other people do. The new federal law in the US actually makes it EASIER to spam rather than harder. At least there is only 1 set of rules to follow now.

Fact is, anyone that knows me well knows that money is and has never been my first priority in anything I've ever done. I look for profit as much as the next guy, but when it comes to my self-respect and integrity no amount of money can pry that away from me. That is why I am puzzled by people like you who talk out of your ass making comments about someone you don't have a clue about.

Fact is, the word you are looking for is "pity", not envy. And you can whine about the way I say things rather than what I'm saying all you want, if you don't like the way I post simply don't click my threads. Fact is, those people who have answered some of my questions with a sensible tone have been treated just fine, but yes --- people including me do have some animosity for certain types of spammers, and with good reason. Bulk spam clogs the internet, it tends to get adult emails into kids inboxes, it serves to piss millions of people off to no end, so yeah... I had a few questions about the mindset of the people behind it all. Don't be such a suck about the way I'm addressing them.

Except... you only get 30 spams a day?? Man, now I've found someone to ENVY! Even with my spam filters and rules set in my email client I still get about 150 a day in my inbox, the rest are filtered to my deleted items bin. I have to skim over all of them to make sure no legit emails were filtered.

Oops. :) Posts: 51,460	Spammers answer a couple questions I'm curious about a few things currently being practised by spammers, ...like for example when someone has words like "enlargement" or "Viagra" blocked in their email client's rules, they do so because they want emails containing those words to go directly to their "deleted items" folder (or as I call it, the "shit" bin)... why do spammers change those words in their spam to things like "en-large-ment" or "Viagra" etc? Is it because you think that if you can fool people's spam filters they will eventually break down and buy something from you? Tell me you don't think people are really that stupid, please. Another question: There seems to be several different techniques for spamming as far as I can tell. One is to just send out mass emails that seem to come from various sources (yet many are obviously from the same spammer) that contain an ad and a link --- "legitimate" spam if you will, while others seem to contain an attachment that when opened, loads some kind of adware or scumware on the recipient's computer that continually does the spamming for you. My question is, do spammers have an "upper class" and "lower class" structure thing going? If you are a spammer who simply sends ads and alters keywords to trick spam filters do you look down upon other spammers who send out .exe files that load scumware? Is there descrimination among spammers? Does one type of spammer think he is better than other types of spammers? Do you ever find yourselves saying "I'm a nicer spammer than that guy over there".... ? No really, I'm very curious as to how the mind of a typical spammer works. And don't be shy about answering, we all know you're here, many of you have openly posted about spamming in the past. Speak up. Lastly, how come there are no trade shows for spammers? Or.... are there? Spammers have drawn the comparison to receiving junk mail and flyers in your real mailbox to spam. The thing is, I can put a sign on my real mailbox that says "NO FLYERS" and can eliminate about 75% of the crap that I get in one shot. I don't have that option with just a regular email inbox. I can understand the outrage that people treat spam with nowadays, it has be a disturbing trend and has left many people feeling helpless. Only compounding the situation is the seeming ineffectiveness of new laws or other anti-spam measures. Since you're set in your views, I don't understand what you hope to gain by starting a thread like this. If you maintained a mature attitude and encouraged honest discussion and constructive criticism, then maybe some dialogue might have occured. But instead you chose to simply whack the mole as soon as it popped its head up. You're obviously angry at spammers for whatever reason, and I suspect your anger is partly motivated by envy. This has become a cliche, but very few people disagree that succesful spammers make a lot of money. A lot of people which depend on the internet to make money have suffered a great deal from spammers. People who run real opt-in lists probably have had their newsletters blocked by all too sensitive spam filters. Battle lines have been drawn and it seems that the two groups are impossible to reconcile. The reason spam is prominent is rooted in simple economics. As long as there is a profit to be made with relatively little risk, people will continue to do it. With the ready availability of internet connectivity and the immense market for spam, it is a certainty the spam will continue unless something more drastic is done. Lastly, I'd just like to say that I am not advocating spam in the least. I think it's terrible how some unskilled, unethical and unscrupulous person can spend a couple of bucks on readily available software and make more money than people who have worked for years, building relationships and establishing contacts. This is akin to those individuals who set up pyramid schemes in the real world and damage a legitimate business' chances for making money.

I sent email for years and followed every law on the books but still had hassles from asswipes like spamcop. THERE IS NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR A MAILING LIST TO BE DOUBLE OPT-IN. Do you really believe that programs that pay for email addresses don't mail to the people that don't confirm their address? They just don't pay the webmaster for it. If I go to a site and enter your email address to enter and don't confirm it I guarentee you will start getting mail. As for putting the "no flyers" sign on your mailbox. I don't get that one at all. You put up a sign and your mailman sorts your mail for you? About 90% of the stuff that shows up in my physical mailbox is junk and goes straight into the shredder. With actual mail I get 4 or 5 CC applications a day so I have to take the time to shread them. The point being that I don't just drag it to the trash can. Every credit card, mortgage proposal, financial deal I get goes through the shredder. So I have to waste my time shredding the stuff and hauling it out to the garbage man. I forgot you are in Canada but it's illegal in the US for people to put things in your mailbox. Only you and the mailman are allowed to do that. I still don't see spam as the massive problem other people do. The new federal law in the US actually makes it EASIER to spam rather than harder. At least there is only 1 set of rules to follow now. I'm obviously not in favor of sending unwanted adult mail to kids or grandmothers. If people want off my list all they have to do is click the remove link. If they don't want to be on it why would I want to keep them?
