A conversation I had with a password thief

snowdrift (07:32 PM) :
the quality of traffic coming from your site has been really bad, im going to let it run 24 hours but if things don't work out i guess they don't work out for this traffic trade. If you have any other sites that you think might run better please msg me
snowdrift (07:33 PM) :
this is the trade of cheerleaderwhore.com to backdoortoporn.com

RicTor (07:36 PM) :
backdoortoporn? is that a password trading site or something?
snowdrift (07:37 PM) :
i thnk that msg got lost please repeat
RicTor (07:38 PM) :
backdoortoporn? is that a password trading site or something?
RicTor (07:38 PM) :
i see you sign up at pigporn.com too...any of my other sites?
snowdrift (07:38 PM) :
correct
RicTor (07:38 PM) :
i do not trade with password sites...please do not send any traffic to my sites
snowdrift (07:39 PM) :
may i ask why?

RicTor (07:39 PM) :
password sites!?!?!?! that's fucking illegal, that's why
snowdrift (07:39 PM) :
no it isnt

RicTor (07:40 PM) :
i own paysites
snowdrift (07:41 PM) :
yeah and password sites probably provide you with more signups than tgp sites, passwords die off in a day, are normally posted by the owners who arent up for using them anymore anyways and then grab others from people who did the same thing
snowdrift (07:41 PM) :
its not illegal and if anything it provides people a glimpse of a pay site in such a way that the pay sites get a better sign up ratio from an inhouse advertising scheme that they technically don't have to approve of
snowdrift (07:42 PM) :
im sure if you examined what i've said you'll find im correct, its not illegal its just not approved of in the public paysite eye but i bet if you look behind the scenes you'll find that more of the richer pay site owners deal with pw sites behind the curtain
snowdrift (07:43 PM) :
just a thought, im not arguing just trying to explain to ya bro
snowdrift (07:43 PM) :
and i don't want to get ya mad so if you just tell me what sites you run i'll make sure they are not on my trade lists
RicTor (07:44 PM) :
http:///www.pigporn.com/webmasters.html
snowdrift (07:45 PM) :
gotcha
snowdrift (07:45 PM) :
btw do you see any truth to what i was telling you?
RicTor (07:46 PM) :
what is your bandwidth bill per month?
snowdrift (07:47 PM) :
not much about 45 bucks right now, but then again i don't really own as many sites as you do
RicTor (07:49 PM) :
A small pay site on its own server might spend 1k a month and a couple bucks per meg overage. 1 day of a password being posted to some password sites causes the bandwidth bill to shoot into the $3-4k range, especially if it's a movie site. The pay site will not make that money back.
RicTor (07:49 PM) :
Do you understand now?
snowdrift (07:51 PM) :
well that part I can see your point, I definately didnt realize the bandwidth would hit like that
RicTor (07:52 PM) :
good bandwidth is not 50 cents a gig like you are propbably paying
snowdrift (07:52 PM) :
actually i have amazing bandwidth and it gets cheaper as i spend more, I would highly recommend my host
RicTor (07:54 PM) :
Paysites need a dedicated server...they pay for bandwidth in megabits...not by the gig
snowdrift (07:59 PM) :
you could use perl scripts to detect and kill a password though within 30 seconds of its posting, thereby protecting your site and making it more secure, if your not doing that your kinda leaving yourself open and asking for it arent ya?

This guys ICQ number is 173726284 if anyone wants to debate this further with him. I don't have time for idiots.

I like it when they argue they are actually benefitting the sites whose passwords they pirate. Yes, I know there ARE some webmasters who give out passwords temporarily, but what about the other webmasters whose bandwidth suddenly goes sky high?

By parity of reason, I could argue that since most of you would be better off with a healthier diet, it would be okay to force you to eat a diet of MY choosing.

I agree with one point. That paysite programs should have some kind of script or piracy detection tool to kill off compromised passwords...

It's called contributory neglegence at the very least. What would I call it?

Gross neglegence, malicious interference with business practices, wire fraud, fraud, computer fraud, theft by deception, conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to commit any of this other stuff, and it also violates several states' computer crimes laws. Build up a history of it and it's RICO.

Oh and according to the new USA Patriot Act, they're also committing acts of terrorism against a US corporation or citizen.

But I'm not a lawyer. Get one.

Yeah right like the US govt gives a flying fuck about password sites. They could care less about a few stray passwords posted on a small bunch of sites or on IRC.

Oh and that guy doesn't have any passwords on his sites, there all scams and links to sponsors and trades. So whats the problem? He is linking to other password sites? OH heaven forbid.

If you don't have pennywize or some other protection from your passwords getting out you deserve what you get. Its like not wearing your seat belt while driving.

And most paysites pay by the GIG NOT by the megabyte. $1 per gig is the average for quality paysite hosting. Or at least it is at candidhosting.com.

just a suggestion from a non-paysite owner:

flood them with "username/password" to go into a teaser area of your site that won't kill you on bandwidth and may result in an upsell or two?

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Curious:

So if I don't lock my door and someone robs me, I deserved it and the culprit should be given a pat on the back rather than thrown in jail?

That arguement has been used by hackers for years. I laughed then. I'm laughing now.

He seemed rather civil to me actually.

In addition, in adult the key is sponsors for "commercial" sites. If you have sponsors, you have approval. So, password sites may not seem ethical, but if sponsors accept the traffic, than they are ok.

wearing a seatbelt is to protect you against an accident not to many passwords are posted by accident so the comparison is not even close. Thinking it is the paysite owneres fault that someone hacked their passwords would be more like thinking that the guy who got robbed was at fault because he didnt carry a gun to protect himself.

Might be a good idea, creating a teaser area on your site.
Just call it a "basic" membership, make it cost like $5 a month for those that sign up to it, and post passwords to it on the password boards.
Then, put a small amount of good content in it, and combine that with lotsa preview to the main site (for instance, a movie site would show everything seen on the normal site, including thumbnails to the movies, except the actual movies),
Password traffic converts better than most other traffic

It is old news, and true. Many paysite owners do it and if you use a program like Pennywize, you can set the max amount of different pc's/people that login with a pass. It will automatically decline any other person trying to login after a set amount, which is great for business.

This is true. I visit a few passwrod sites, so I can see what they have in members area. Most have shit 90+ %.. Was looking today at some, and saw mostly shit. The porn sponsors am using right now are just not converting worth a dam. I'll most likely take all per sign ups sponsors off, and go back to 100% recurring 1's. I see no reason why most paysites would have a problem with being listed on a password site, the surfer will burn very little B/W, unless they are idoits and like to look at shit. Am fucking serious.

Okay, you guys missed my point. Everyone knows it's possible to stop password theft if you know what you are doing. I was commenting on the ethics of password thievery and the fact that this guy thought it was okay to steal from other webmasters. His rant on why he is justified to steal could have been cut and pasted from any number of posts of seen on webmaster boards like this one since 1996.

he has a point. Paysites should only allow 1 user/pass combo at once...its common sense. No offense Rictor, but if you're not running something to solve that problem, you're fucking yourself.
