:2cents I Have Diabetes & My Dr. Is A Prude

I've had excellent health until, all of a sudden, I got diabetes. Boom...from out of nowhere at age 43. While they tried to determine if it was Type 1 (the worst one) or Type 2 (the manageable one), I had to immediately begin giving myself insulin shots into my stomach. Fucking freaked me out, since I've never given a shot before...especially not to myself in my STOMACH.

It would be a few days until she told me if I was Type 1 or 2, so they said absolutely no sugar, booze, or starches until my blood sugar numbers dropped to safer levels and the results came back. The brought in tons of literature, about 90% food related, and discussed in-depth with me about foods that I need to avoid and the dangers they cause.

When the dr. told me all of this, I said...tongue-in-cheek, yet seriously..."What about swallowing cum?" She just stared at me blankly. I followed up "I mean...some guys I've given head to have had very sweet cum and I read that it was their recent or heavy sugar intake that day, so I need to know how far I should take this drastic diet change." She said (are you ready for this?)...."Perhaps you should try Google for that information or ask a nutritionist. They didn't teach me that in medical school."

I laughed out loud (a literal lol) because it was pretty fucking funny....until I realized that her facial expression was not one of amusement, then she quickly got up, mumbled something about getting me a referral for a dietitian and that I'd be hearing back on my test results soon and she was outta' there!

She already knew that I'm gay, so it couldn't have been the shock of that or that she thought I was some straight dude making some really bad pass at her. Was I really that out of line?

When I called my doc in Seattle and told her the story, she said that I'm getting older and the facials would do me good. Ha! I love that woman

That's in bad taste whether you're gay or straight....However, if that's what you gotta do to lighten up the mood, so be it.

So, don't be fat.

Thanks for asking It was 2. Yep...I tend to lose my filter when my stress level peaks. For the amount I pay in insurance + co-pay + deductibles, etc., nothing should be sacred between me and my doctor. But it was mostly the filter thing.

Both are manageable, sometimes Type 2 is more tricky because the consequences are not in short term so people underestimate it and tend to "forget" to be carefull with food and other stuff.

People with Type 1 don't have much time to cross the line because the consequences can be in very very short term, they have only 2 choices: to take care of it or to suffer.

Anyway, good luck with it

This is only true for Type 2.. everybody healthy or slim can get type 1, it is an auto immune problem were your beta cells get damaged and can no more control sugar levels in your body, it is not curable although they are experimenting with ways to implant beta cells from cadavers.
I got Type 1 at age 40 and as long your kidneys are still intact and you control your sugar levels with insulin you can grow to become a 100.
Unfortunately my kidneys were slightly damaged and got medicine to stop them from leaking protein also i have medicines for high cholesterol.

Godsmack: Sorry to hear about your kidneys but am happy to hear the damage stopped there and meds are "all" you need for them.

My number was above 600 when I went in...they couldn't even get a meter reading or AC1 reading from me because their machines only went up to 600. This is when everyone freaked out. The were concerned about my organs, eyes, and feet.....explained to me that usually goes to and concentrates on one of those three and causes major damage to whichever it chooses to focus on. Mine was my eyes, but was only temporary as my numbers go lowered quickly. I say all of this because one of the guys I met in the waiting room got hit by it in his kidneys so bad that he has to start dialysis...so I'm happy to hear that you got managed and dodged the bullet (or just got nicked by it

Yeah, the damage to my kidneys were not that bad thank god for that. A life of dialyzes isn't much fun.
My numbers were off the scale as well, and i was dried out, they put 12 sacs of fluid back into my body which took over a week or so. I dropped in weight 22 kilos in only a few weeks, this is were my wife said i had to go to the doctor.

What sucked as well is that i bought a new house when i was in hospital and i had to fill in papers for my life insurance, guess what... they don't want to insure me because of this diabetes type 1.
I hope you can get yours under control, it took me some months to get it under control and i am less and less sick. My first week on insulin was hell, my eyes had to get used to the insulin resulting in 2 weeks of almost total blindness, was real scary, also the medicines i got for cholesterol, blood pressure and leaking kidneys made me really really sick for weeks.

I have type 2, have had type 2 for years. I have been on every pill they have. They all bottom me out. I eat take a pill 2 hours later I would bottom out. I have been on the insulin pen, when I had my heart attack they would bang me with the pen right after I ate. I liked it so much that I had the doctor give me a perscription. In the last 3 years there has been two pills that give you other problems. If you can get your doctor to do it, go with the insulin pen. Check with a pharmacy and see if your insurance covers it. Mine had to get pre approved, but they did end up paying for it. The pens are like $125-250 for 5 with insurance they are only $30 for 5. A pen will last me a week. I am what they call borderline. When your borderline its really hard to get a pill that you can ajust where with insulin I just take a little after I eat and it doesn't bottom, it drops it just enough to where I am fine.

The day I found out I was diabetic, I went and ate a super chili dog with cheese and onions, a large fry and a large coke. That was the last coke I ever drank with sugar. Most of the time you will find me with a can or a bottle of diet mountain dew.

Another thing don't drink energy drinks, even if they are sugar free, they thicken your blood and can do more damage than being diabetic.

Watch your feet, if they start to swell up you need to get to the hospital as your retaining water, and working on congestive heart failure. Thats really important.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
I have 2 pens, one for the Levemir long working insulin that i use before i go to bed, and the other is the Novorapid which is fast working and take 12 units before every meal, my mmol is pretty much under control and it reads between 5.5 and 6.2 or so, which is great.. took me some months though to get there.
If i can keep this up i should be able to grow old although some damage was already done, let's just hope i have it all under control and there is not more damage being done.

My insurance covers my insulin and meds.. but i cant get life insurance which sucks.

Sorry to hear that you're doing the battle with it, too. I'd never heard about the non-sugar energy drinks, so thanks for the head's up.

Yeah i put my financial advisor on it and find out.
I am ok to pay some extra for it also my levels are ok now so it wouldn't be fair not to insure me.
I am not fat, i don't smoke, stopped drinking, my cholesterol is good, kidneys no longer leak and my blood pressure is fine.. not much reason for denying me i would say.

i'm suprised no one has mentioned how important diet and exercise are for controlling diabetes.

well, i guess the op did mention his sperm diet.

that's mostly protein though, so drink up johnny!

If you just developed type 2, you most certainly were not in the "excellent health" you claim. Sounds like you need a complete overhaul on how to eat healthy.

Yeah, type 2 is mostly related to bad health etc.

Type 1 everybody can get, young, old, fat, slim, healthy or not so healthy.
It is a auto immune problem were your body attacks your beta cells for no reason and destroy them. Your pancreas is no longer able to make/release insulin which you need to burn sugar.
Many people with type 1 have it since birth, many children have this.

It's unknown why the immune system suddenly decides to attack your beta cells.

Technically not, mr. obvious Prior to symptoms arising all of my physicals, blood, etc. were all normal. Perhaps I shouldn't have said "excellent health" but if you'd prefer, I'll say "Good health before my pancreas suddenly stopped producing insulin and then I was no longer in excellent health." The symptoms began (although I didn't know they were symptoms yet) when I started a diet and it was going GREAT...so great that I lost 30 pounds in 2 months. I even bragged a bit about my success. After those two months, my mouth became uber dry and I got an unquenchable thirst. A friend said that I needed to see my dr. immediately. The dr. said my weight loss was not due to my dieting attempt but rather to the onset of diabetes.

Fuck man, I was eating some good Parmesan Chicken... Why do you gayers always have to talk about your gayness in the most gayest ways?

That's a completely reasonable question that most people would be afraid to ask. Your doctor needs to work on her bedside manner.

dunno if you are insulin dependent or not, but most type 2's can be controlled or even go away with diet.

The type i have means that my pancreas doesn't make any insulin at all so i will have to use insulin rest of my life or until they find some cure. There are some experiments going on that look pretty positive though.

A buddy of mine used to send his minions in to docs to say: "I'm gay but I cant keep it up, I need Viagra etc" works.
