Cool movie on Netflix

I just watched Darkon. It is a documentary about a group of people in this live action role playing game named Darkon. They dress like D&D type characters and battled every weekend.

It was an interesting look into a group of people that often find themselves outcast in society, but free to be themselves when they are pretending to be other people. The movie revolves around a power struggle between two of the main players.

One interesting, kind of sad, part was when one of the guys that appears in it several different times explains how he was in high school when the Columbine attack happened. He had a pretty normal high school life then someone saw him with a list of names. It turns out the list was given to him by his teacher and was a list of kids who had detention. The word spread that he had a list of people he was going to kill and from that moment on he was pretty much shunned at school by everyone.

I'm going to have to watch that. I'm 38 and growing up I used to play D&D religiously, albeit never dressing up and doing the live action thing. I can remember being 12 or 13 and my mother dropping me off at the library a few times a week for games, and the players would range in age from my age at the time to guys in their 40's. Talk about a fucking weird vibe.

I can also remember people taking it way too seriously and either committing suicide or doing some other crazy shit because they actually thought they were their character. If I recall correctly there was a movie called Mazes and Monsters about exactly that, starring a very young Tom Hanks...

I remember that movie. I played D&D as a kid as well. I mostly played with a group of friends, but we played a handful of different games. None of us ever did the live action thing and I haven't played any of those games since shortly after high school.

In the movie they explain that the battles often take place in public parks. They show some of the people arriving for the battle, but they never show any of the other people in the park. I would love to see some of their reactions as 200 people show up and get out of their cars dressed like knights and mages then proceed to lay out a strategy, give these long, Braveheartesqe speeches then battle.

I think I probably gave up on D&D in 10th grade or so. I used to have so many games going on at once it was insane, and I can remember being a Dungeon Master at like 14 and having 40 year old men in my game. It was such a strange vibe but back then your parents would think nothing of dropping you off at some stranger's house for the weekend for a D&D marathon. Come to think of it some of my earliest interactions with alcohol and drugs were at those games.

I couldn't imagine doing the live action thing though. Back then the farthest we went were those pewter D&D figurines, and even those were kind of a burden. We used to be secretive as hell about playing D&D because the last thing we wanted was to be labeled a nerd and never get laid. Nowadays it's almost cool to be a nerd and there is a whole subculture of nerd chicks that will fuck you...

We got screwed when it comes to what is cool and what isn't. When I was in high school kids that were into comic books and video games and D&D were nerds. They were outcast and shunned. Now they are the cool ones. Suddenly it is cool to be into that stuff and you can actually get girls who are also into that stuff. I was born a couple of generations too early. LOL
