Because it is hot and I had a brain melt because Passport is one of my favourite films ever. It is just so very wonderfully British. They are remaking it apparently..I worry.

there was a story (70s or 80s) about a guy who was dying of cancer and he was severely depressed so he went to a hotel with his vhs player and most of the marx bros movies. He came out of his depression and beat the cancer, claiming the marx brothers saved his life.

no one has ever managed to repeat that kind of comedy ever imo.
Hehe, yup can't beat them. Groucho is a legend!

"Monkey Business" is another classic!!

Pretty cool

I actually used to watch Charlie Chaplin, Harold Loyd, Frigo, Laurel and Hardy as a kid on the communist TV.

There was a program every Sunday, 60 minutes with the old school comedy, I remember that like yesterday.

They're releasing their DVD's now, so of course I'm buying.

Gotta get me some Marx brothers also

Now I'm totally sure that much of my natural sarcasm comes from the British culture.

forgot about those classics! The Haunting is one of those great horror movies that is pure atmosphere. They never show anything but its really effective.

Also - The original Invasion Of The Body Snatchers

And The Innocents based on the book Turn Of The Screw. It has a scene of a ghost standing in the distance across a lake and I swear thats where Black Sabbath got their inspiration for the album cover-

I also hate the CGI bullshit, it's so unnatural, all you need is to play with attention, tension, timing and NOT idiotic effects.

Like I saw some CGI movie with my brother in the cinema, the plot was so bad that a 10 year old would go insane, but the effects and gore was like 18+ and puking, I couldn't believe anyone in this world can actually take it seriously.

And the main hero was so "cute" that only Juicy could compete with him.

Damn thats one hell of a collection, i have a similar one but only 25 and some are pretty lame.
But seeing that list I now need to add-
# Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961) - very funny Roger Corman horror comedy.
# Carnival of Souls (1962)
# The Last Man on Earth (1964) (this is the first version of "I Am Legend" which i would take any day over the Will Smith crap remake)

yes i am another one who says screw cgi, it still looks fake and it takes them millions to do it.
on the other hand, even tho i do like low budget cheap ass effects like It Conquered The World, there were many 50's films which still look great-
Forbidden Planet, Day The Earth Stood Still, alot of Harryhausen stop motion animation flicks are great. sure they may seem a little jerky in the motion, but still better than the uninspiring cgi effects i see today.

yes it was crappy as are most remakes.
the one that really baffles me tho is that remake of Psycho. don't know what Van Zandt was trying to get at, he just did a shot for shot remake which was flat and lifeless.

it was like he was saying "This is what it would look like in color!" what a douche.

It's not a classic, but it fits: Man Bites Dog. Clerks is also a requirement for anyone who grew up in the late 80s/early 90s.

That weekend chiller-thriller movie night thing had so many great b&w horror and sci fi movies it was insane. Came on right after Perry Mason here, which set the mood for it.

Attack of the 50 ft woman (original)
The Indestructible Man
The Wolfman
The Mummy
The Behemoth
It came from beneath the sea
The amazing collosal man
Attack of the Crab Monsters

Tons more. Can't remember them all, only recall snippets of some and don't know the titles. I keep watching for such movies on Turner Classics but they only rarely show these kinds of fims.

As a kid in the 70's i used to buy super 8 films of some of these movies, you could go into kmart for instance and buy 10 minute condensed versions of "Attack of the Crab Monsters" and a ton of others.

I still recall the line of dialogue from Attack of the Crab Monsters-
"So professor, how are the crabs blowing up the island?"

You could also buy the super 8 film stock and go shoot your own, which i did when i could scrape the money together cuz it was pretty expensive.

Turner is just too conservative. Occasionally you will see The Wolfman or Invasion Of The Body Snatchers but thats about it.

Once in a blue moon they go on a jag and run several of them back to back. I've caught the odd 50's sci fi B flick on there, but you're right, for the most part they stick to the more conservative films.

I wish the Space channel would get off this horror kick they've been on for so long and start running some classic sci fi. After all, are they the Space channel or the horror channel? Even if they ran some classic horror films it would be better. Christ lately it's all "Bride of Chucky" every other weekend. Ugh.

well the space channel at least was better than what sci fi or ugh syfy channel turned out to be.
space channel is canadian right? i only got that channel when i lived in washington state several years back and never heard of it before then.

that sucks though, they should be showing some more old science fiction stuff, shit the stuff is cheap to broadcast and i am sure at least a small percent is in public domain by now.

i miss canadian tv alot. used to watch it all the time. this hour has 22 minutes, Made In Canada, Talking To Americans.... great stuff.

I had a pretty active video tape trading newsletter in the 80s and I would receive these great old flicks. A lot of people would record them from Super Chiller Theater type shows, others had old copies, etc. Before DVDs came out. It was a glorious time for movies, hehe.

In October TCM gets a little looser, like one night I watched Spider Baby and Freaks back to back, with one of my favorite film historians Robert Osborne offering commentary.

Spider Baby and Freaks...Amazing, maybe they are loosening up a bit.

Spider Baby is fairly rare, they did a dvd re-release several years ago so i snagged a copy but i'd never heard of it on tv before.

I cringe when i think of some of the great shit i had on VHS that i never transferred and lost.

i think you're talking about The Thing From Another World which Carpenter remade as the Thing. in truth i think Carpenter's version is far better, closer to the book and really a masterpiece of science fiction- horror.

the original story called "Who Goes There?" was written by John Campbell in the 30's, one of my favorite science fiction writers of the period.

Nice to see some classic horror fans posting. Here's some good ones that haven't been mentioned yet.

City Of The Dead (aka Horror Hotel)
Castle Of Blood
House On Haunted Hill
Night Of The Demon
The Old Dark House
Black Sunday
The Uninvited

That's my favorite horror movie of all time. I wish more horror directors would take a lesson from this movie. Love the book too.

Love to see how many people here are mentioning Metropolis.

Anyone in Tampa Bay- at the end of August at the Tampa Theatre they are playing the definitive restoration (something like 25 extra minutes of found and restored footage) with live musical accompaniment on the huge antique theatre organ. So all about this.

If you love Virginia Wolf, if you haven't seen it yet you have GOT to see Night of the Iguana. All that needs to be said- Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, based on play written by Tennesse Williams. I love it more than Streetcar.
